Growing Out Forum?

I wanted to bring this topic up here to see what the other ladies thought before making a suggestion in the feedback forum. I was thinking that it would be great to have a section just for topics about growing out hair. When I search for long hair topics, I find that there's long hair/growing out topics on almost every one of the hair forums here. It would be great if they could be combined on one board. What do you think? Do you think people would visit it? I think it would be busier than some of the other hair forums here. I used to go to TLHS.org, my favorite long hair site, but it's shutting down. :( I'm not so crazy about Long Hair Community. I go to this site quite a bit anyway, so it would be cool if we had our own mini long hair/growing out section. What do you think?

I'm growing mine out too, but I'm not sure what's there to talk about. I figure I just wait, right? Might be interesting to see what other people have to say about it though.

I'm not trying to grow mine any longer than it already is, just trying to keep it healthy at this length, but I'd definitely find that kind of discussion interesting! :)

That would be a great idea. Especially since at the LHC, there are all hair types. The one thing that sucks about growing curly hair out is that it takes forever due to shrinkage!

I think it might be beneficial to have a seperate forum. It could be a support forum. I've found a lot of info about taking care of curly hair. And a lot of info about taking care of long hair. But it would be nice to know how to actually GET long, curly hair

There are lots of vitamins/supplements for increasing growth to discuss, at-home trimming and dusting methods (learning how to get the most "mileage" out of your trim/cut)... Also we can use it as a support center, like someone else mentioned. Maybe someone will have advice about getting through an awkward growth stage, for instance.

This is a great idea. I am currently growing my hair out AND taking a double daily dose of GNC hair, skin & nails formula. I am desperate for any information that will keep me from going back under the scissors. Last cut I had didn't turn out as well as I thought it would. she cut too much, against my wishes. So now I am back at the very familiar "Square One" and willing to handcuff myself to the house in order to NOT get another haircut for a long time.

    LET"S DO THIS THING!

we have a grow out challenge on our 3b forum, and we support each other by not getting a haircut unless we discuss it first! i'd participate in a longhair forum for sure. my hair is just about 30" long now, and i am about to get a shaping with carlos in feb-he's good about not cutting too much and lets me come once a year. i find that the way to grow your hair is DON'T CUT IT

The pre-cut discussion sounds like a good idea. I had a cut yesterday when I had my color done. My ends were bad since I've been have a challenge with conditioners this winter so I had about 2 inches cut off, putting me at 27 inches right now. But, I keep wondering if it's too long to be flattering and have thought about hacking off 8 inches or so. I know I'd be mad if I did, so I didn't go through with it. The last time I had a trim before yesterday was July.

I just found a decent conditioner this week (hopefully), so I hope that helps with ends for the rest of the winter. I need to learn about this dusting of my own ends though.

The same thing happened to me in July! I asked for layers too (but I had my hair straightened) and also asked for bangs. The bangs turned out great but I got a cross between a bowl cut and a mullet. She literally hacked off everything...

Since a lot of curlies seem interested in a growing out board, I posted the idea on the feedback board. Guess we'll see what happens!

Cool! I've been to LHC. While there is much in the way of great advice there, I also find it to be somewhat fetishistic (if that's a word) when it comes to the need to have long, long hair. It puts me off a tad.

i know what u mean. one person on LHC wrote that she spends 8 hrs a day on her hair--give me a break!! one thing i notice tho now my hair is longer--it does get caught in zippers and squished under things which i can imagine would cause breakage. they talk about protective hair styles which keep hair healthy at any length, like a braid or bun. i just have to remember to do it before i go out hiking or itwill be quite messy and makeshift. oh dread

That's how I feel too. I want long hair, sure, but won't go to great lengths to get it (no pun intended!) and am not that into the super long lengths. It was actually not that that bothered me so much as when I posted a political opinion that was different from the majority opinion I got ganged up on bigtime. I wasn't rude or disrespectful of the other opinion at all. When I attempted to explain myself, I was told not to talk about politics again or else they'd ban me temporarily. Anyway, LHC is a unique place. I did learn some neat things there, but it's just not my type of place.

I have long hair (below BSL) but I REALLY want it down to my waist, and to grow out all the thinned-out ends, so I'd be up for that.

    CurlyMireya,

I'm not sure about super long lengths for me either. I think that it can become unflattering at around waist length, mostly because it hides the waist and can make a normally curvy woman look a little blocky. But, others love it, so more power to them. However, it would be interesting to see how long the curls can get before the length and weight pulls ou7t the curl.

I think there can be an extra challenge for the curly trying to grow it. On Thursday, my hair was straight when I left the salon. It was 27". Today, I did my first post color co wash and left it curly. Now it's 22.5". I don't mind the shrinkage from a curl perspective. The curlier the better for me. But, it's funny to know that my hair can be different lengths depending on how much curl is or isn't going on.

I agree it would be interesting to hear from some curlies with very long hair, to see what kind of hair issues they have. I have more wave than curl so shrinkage isn't something I'm dealing with. Though when it's very humid I get some curls and do lose some length. 4.5 inches is a lot of shrinkage though - it must be strange to see your hair shrink like that, though I bet you're used to it. I've learned just from being here for a short while that it's really difficult for some curlies to achieve long lengths. I hope the growing out board will be of some help to them.
