Help me find a good lip color!

SCGSCG Posts: 5,416Registered Users
Ok, I'm sure there has been a thread like this before, but I got tired of looking through old threads and figured I'd just start my own!

I've been wanting to play around with fun lip colors, but I'm having a hard time picking out the right ones! I'm really not a huge fan of lip gloss, because the uber shiny/glossy/wet look just does not work for me. I can do a little bit of shine (Chap Stick seems to be about as shiny as I can go ;)), but lipstick tends to be a better fit for me.

I know the general colors/shades to stay away from and whatnot, but can anyone suggest specific brands and colors? Some colors sound like fun in theory, but once I get to the store, I get really freaked out by the selection, and find myself thinking "Okay, there's NO way that would look good on me!"

This is a pretty recent picture, not sure if it's necessary or not! But I have no idea if I have a warm/cool/neutral complexion (all of the "tests" seem to fail on me), so I figured it might come in handy! If you need a better one, let me know!

MAC has a cool new collection in honour of interior designer Iris Apfel that has some wild brights in it. why not drop by there and give them a try?

or try the classic reds like Ruby Woo, Russian Red or MAC Red?

a classic red would be nice with your dark hair - all you need is eyeliner and mascara to finish the look.

Love that Ruby Woo color - thanks Rouquinne! I never thought of myself as someone who would pull off a red color, actually... I feel like this opens up some more possibilities!

    And thanks, Kasden! :)

    What shades don't you like?

I think you're olive toned, like Kim Kardashian. She looks beautiful in light nudish pinks. You could try Velvet Teddy by Mac. Lovelorn also by Mac is much pinker, but I think it'd be pretty too. Tatjanaberry by Kevyn Aucoin is also nice.

For a darker pink, Sephora has an iridescent fuschia that's lovely. I forget the name though.

Honestly, unless it's a super dark color, I'm not particularly opposed to any shades! I feel like I do the same boring thing every day, and I'd like to be able to switch it up, and lipstick seems like a good place to start!

I like those light pink shades, too... I'll have to check them out. :)

Speaking of KK, I'm loving her lipstick here:

That could be MAC's Girl About Town. It's one of my favorites :) I love MAC lipsticks, they're the only product I buy from them because they come in so many pigmented bright colors!

For pinkish nude colors I am loving viva glam VI lipstick. When I did a google image search on it though, it seems it's more pinkish than nude on most of the people in the photos. My lips are dark so it shows up more nude but has good coverage. It looks great with a light pink lipgloss(like love nectar from MAC) over it also.

Certain colors should be left behind when women reach a certain age.

    really?

    like what?
Matte lipstick is best on certain age groups and so are glossy, high sheen lipstick styles.

and which age groups are those?
...if you want something for a night on the town, a neutral that looks fabulous during the day may not have the same dramatic impact you'd like for evening....

    NO?

    wow!

i do think finishes matter and also whats going on with your eyes and cheeks and even hair but i think of it more in the context of the look you're trying to achieve not necessarily age. i personally think a neutral eye and bold red lip can look good on any age. i also think gloss/shine lip color can look good on anyone and actually help get a fuller looking lip but yeah glitter and sparkles, if not done correctly can look gaudy and not appropriate (at any age).

I heard many years ago that to find the most flattering shades of lip color, you should go with colors that are close to or in the same family as the color of the inside of your lip.

Over the years, I've found that to hold true.

Selecting the right lipstick is not just about color selection. Color is important, but there are other factors to consider. Certain colors should be left behind when women reach a certain age. Frosts and shimmers don't look terrific on all skin types. Matte lipstick is best on certain age groups and so are glossy, high sheen lipstick styles. Now more than ever there are limitless lipstick selections, but all is not lost.
Also, when choosing a color, take into account your lifestyle and what situations you would wear this particular lipstick. Will you be wearing it to work? If so, a deep purplish burgundy may look scary and out of place. By the same token, if you want something for a night on the town, a neutral that looks fabulous during the day may not have the same dramatic impact you'd like for evening....

LOL wow, I dont think ive ever disagreed with a post more than this on nc.com!

Interesting Ill have to check that out..

I've been trying to do bold colors lately(like the kim k color) just do something different. I still think I look best in light pinkish and nude colors at work and even on a night out because i like to do very dark smokey eyes and lots of contouring and shimmer. I have to wear very neutral makeup when I do brighter lips and it's not as flattering to me.

I love Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Balms (SPF 15). They deposit more color than you would think. Passion (red), Sugar Plum (plum), and Honey (nude tone). My favorite is Sugar Plum. They also have a pink tone (Rose) that I really want to try. I bought the set of the Passion/Sugar Plum/Honey at Sephora. It cost $22 for the set and they are smaller than the full size but I wanted to give them a try.

I highly recommend them! I'm definitely going back to purchase the full size Sugar Plum.

I really enjoy the Avon ultra color rich lipstick. They are about I think around $7 when they are not on sale. Which is not bad for a good lipstick. They come in different finishes. I like that about the lipstick and I do not think a lot of companies tell you the exact finish. I think some browns and bright colors will look wonderful against your skin tone. You may enjoy the color red 2000 (which is a bright red), Wink (bright pink), Poppy love (which is another red). All the lipsticks I mention are satins. I do not think they look too glossy or shiny on the lips. If you know a someone who sells avon, then you can ask for samples. This way you know a color will look nice on you before you spend your money.
