Killed my curl :(

Hey everyone.

I really hope that you can help me.

I used to have hair that was about three inches past my shoulders and was naturally curly (3B) I never used to condition it because it is prone to getting greasy.

I straightened my hair EVERYDAY for about 5 years, however when I had a shower it would always go back to naturally curly (including if I slept on it etc.)

About one and a half years ago I had my hair cut into a long bob and still straightened it and would curl it with straighteners and it would stay in my hair.

About six months ago I decided it would be so much easier for me to just leave my hair natural and plus I really miss my curly hair so I did what I used to do, (washed it and either put it up in a bun damp or left it in a bun during the day) but it wouldn't go curly :( not even wavy, the most I would get is a bad excuse for a curl where my hair bobble had been. I went to have my hair trimmed and my hairdresser commented on how straight it was :(

Anyway, I started to use metal curlers for my hair and the next time I had my hair done my hair dresser said I had singed the top layer of my hair off by using the curlers. So once a week I am using a moisture hair mask to try to get rid of the dry frizzy singed bits and have been limiting the amount that I use my straighteners to curl my hair.

Tonight I used conditioner for the first time in ages and put a little moose in my hair before drying it with a diffuser and there is no curl at all :( I have it damp in a bun and see if that will help.

Has anyone got any ideas why it would suddenly go straight?

Sorry for the really long post, I hope you can help.

    heat damage?

Have you tried a protein treatment followed by a good deep conditioning? A series of treatments like this over a few months helped bring my curls back when I had severe heat damage (like seriously straight/wavy hair with no chemicals when I'm a natural 4a). You need to stay away from using so much heat too. Every time you use it now will just set you back. Once your hair has regained its health, if it does, you can go back to limited use of the heat. Some people have super strong hair, they can use as much heat as they want and there curls will bounce back. Some people can't use heat at all. It sounds like your hair has simply reached its limit for the heat at the moment.

Hope they bounce back for you. Good luck!

Condish: ElucenceMBC, HEHH, my kitchen mixes

Moisturizer: mixed spritz of: H20, aloe vera juice, honey, EVCO, ElucenceMBC

Curl Definer: H20 & a shake, my moisturizer mix.... or aloe vera/flax seed/ic fantsia gel if I'm not being lazy.

Styles: wash-n-go, twists just curl up like my wash-n-go

Thank you so much, I will look into a protein treatment.
I think that must be the case my hairdresser has always said that it takes a lot to get my hair out of being in really good condition so all the bad stuff I done must have just ruined it.
The hair mask has definitely been making it moisturised and I get the occasional curl, everyone said my hair is looking less shiny and frizzy so I hope that's a sign that it is starting to get a bit better.
I guess I am in it for the long haul then.

    Thank you for your help.

I agree, protein treatments for sure and limited heat. It may take a while, but I really think if you take care of your hair, it will bounce back! ;)
