2012 Grow Challenge!

BleachedCurlsBleachedCurls Posts: 56Registered Users
I severely damaged my hair with box bleach kits in 2010. I just got the last 2 inches of it cut off last week. (: I'd like to have my hair to under breast length by January 1st, 2013. (it's currently to the bottom of my neck.) I don't think I'm going to reach this goal but my hair's been growing so well lately I figure why not? my hair is naturally light brown but I like it white blonde, & ever since I started going to a salon that uses ammonia free Redken bleach I don't notice any damage. For real, I barely get split ends anymore<3 which means less trims. I have body wave extensions for now until I reach my goal, I suggest extensions to all curlies that are in the in between stage & hate it. Anyways, I'd love it if someone joined me in my challenge!

Vitamins/Products/Tools I will be using:
5,000 MCG Biotin
HER Hair, Skin, & Nail pills
Garnier Fructise Triple Nutrition & Tresemme MC & Suave Coconut CO (I alternate between these as my CO washes, but I think I'll mainly be using Garnier & Sauve for protein this year)
EVCO & EVOO (as deep CO treatments)
LALSG
GVP CB (as a LI)
Clairol Shimmer Lights Blonde & Silver co (I have to tone my hair once a week)
Grapeseed Oil (as my heat protectant for when I do use heat)
T3 Blow Dryer
T3 Curling Iron
Chi Flat Iron

I am thinking about adding MSM & Monistat but not sure? I had a bad experience with Monistat a few years ago when I had an infection & it burned me really bad down there/: so I'm wary on using it on my head. Also I have my hair in a messy bun a lot, I think it's a protective style but not sure? I add LI or Gel or a little bit of CO & wait until my hair is about 70% dry then comb it with a wide tooth comb & put it in a bun on top of my head, making sure the ends are on top of my head & not in the back so they don't rub against the pillow when I sleep bc I don't have satin or silk ones): & two things I've gotten better at is how much I wash my hair & how much heat I use. for a while there I was washing it & blow drying it & straightening it/curling it with an iron every day lol. now I try to use my blow dryer once a month if that & I try to only straighten it once every 2 weeks.

Any advice on anything will be greatly appreciated! I'm fairly new to this & would love to be completely CG one day. Thanks!

I'm in too! I'm about 6 months into growing out a pixie, so not sure what my realistic goal is length-wise by Jan 1 2012, but would love to be at least shoulder length by then. Any longer would be a bonus. I'll post a pic later when my hair dries, I'm wearing my wondercap atm, lol.

@BleachedCurls, I used the box bleach kit for a while and it killed my hair. I did that and a Brazilian Keratin Treatment and well, needless to say, my hair is falling out in clumps. So I figured "what the hell". I'm gonna get a pixie cut and grow it out natural.

Putting your hair in a messy bun is bad bc it breaks the hair and it tangles.

I'm on doctors orders for limited activity for now as well, but since I started eating healthier and drinking loads of water, my hair has reacted pretty well thus far.

    *Good luck ladies* :)

I'm in as well ladies! I'm currently 6 months post BC and so far so good. I'm wearing protective styles for the remainder of the winter mostly half wigs with my hair braided underneath. I use WGHO 2x's a week, Futerbiotics HSN vitamins, MSM, and horsetail supplements. I need to increases my water intake. I also just started the 21 day vegan Kickstart diet so I will be getting plenty of vegetables and fruit in my dirt. Wish you all the best and happy growing!

I'm in!!! I've been growing my hair out (for the 30 millionth time lol) since August. I cut it into a slight A-line bob last April and loved the way it looked straight but not so much with my natural wave. In July, I had my stylist adjust it to more of a shag and in September, I told her I was growing it out so she just did a trim. I'm going tomorrow for another one. I've been taking MSM since August or so (can't remember exact month), have been eating more protein, cutting back on blowing out, and using argan oil a couple times a week on my scalp. I'm not the greatest with posting pics but I'll try to be good about it!! Right now, my hair is an inch or 2 above my collar bone when it's wavy and tomorrow when it's cut I'll see what it's like straight. Good luck to everyone!!!!!!!

I have been taking vitacost brand HSN (1x a day as opposed to 2 as they recommend), 5,000mcg biotin, and 1,000mg MSM consistently for a couple of weeks now. I have noticed that my nails are significantly stronger and are not breaking off or splitting spontaneously like they were before. I hope my hair is having the same effect. Also, overnight scalp treatments with castor oil/EVOO and daily scalp massages with jojoba. The jojoba has stopped my itchy/scabby scalp. Allowing hair to grow healthy in those areas. The castor oil is said to have great benefits for hair growth. I haven't been doing them for too long so once I have, I will let you ladies know.

I would love to join the challenge also! My hair was very healthy at the beginning and middle of 2011. But in the fall I went through a little rebellion. ;) Before that my hair was BSL, I rarely used heat, and had been using a semi-permanent dark blonde for two years. I had always wanted my hair that length but I got bored. I felt the length was too heavy. I started these thoughts in the spring and did the smart thing. I started cutting 1-2 inches off at a time.

Cutting off length wasn't enough so I got highlights in August and touched up twice up till mid November. In September I cut the length to SL. Then in September I started using a straighener every other day.

Mid November I realized how bad I was treating my hair. I knew it all long but figured if I kept it short, I could trim the damage. It didn't work out and I knew it wasn't worth the damage. Plus I missed my curls!!

I dyed my hair brown with the Semi-permanent. It washed out within a month and was blonde again. But a few weeks ago I tried a medium brown and it's staying really well. :)

I no longer straighten my hair and the curls came back. It took two weeks in November for them to recover but they came back.

My hair is now 2-3 inches past shoulder. But when curly it's SL.

Now I am working to go back to BSL. I hope to be there by Janurary 2013 but I would be happy to be a few inches away from that.

Really excited to see everyone growth this year!

Im in. although i dont know how far i'll get it. i don't apply any heat anymore(except bangs) due to hair significantly thinner then it was a few years back. my hair is currently dangling to touch my shoulder.. we shall see!

I suggest keeping the flat iron as far away from your hair as possible. I haven't trimmed my hair in 14 months and I have no split ends, only some SSKs that I cut every once in a while. I only straighten my hair very sporadically. I straightened in April for a friend's graduation and again in November just because. I probably won't straighten again till my wedding in December and i'm only doing that because I really want to show off my length that day. So the moral of the story is if the hair is not damaged it WILL grow. I, like many others, used to believe I can do anything to my hair and then slap some conditioner on it and it would fix itself.

thank you everybody for the responses! I can't wait to see our hair pics next year!(: I'm excited. I need to get a picture on here without my extensions to show my real length.

I have another question, does dry shampoo defeat the purpose of not washing your hair? When I use heat I always have to use it either the next day or the day after that because my hair looks so greasy):

I've used dry shampoo LOTS of times and it really comes in handy!!! It's a great way to wait another day to wash your hair. I just got my hair trimmed yesterday and blown out as well. It's not quite as long as I thought it would be but it's def. grown since my last salon visit!! I plan on staying away from heat styling as long as I possibly can and get another trim at the end of March or beginning of April. :toothy4:

I'd love to join too! I've been looking around the site for a while but am new to participating. I'm a 2c, 3a blonde UK curly, growing out straightener damaged hair. I've got to shoulder length, but would really love it to reach bra strap length. I'll be putting it in buns, sticking to co-washing, deep conditioning and taking multi vitamins with biotin and omega 3/fish oil tablets. Good luck everyone! I'll put pictures up soon.

I'm in but I will have to do some trims to get rid of some split ends and the remainder of some relaxed hair. I just had a baby so my hair grew a lot. It's 3b and a little past APL. I'm pretty sure I can make WL by 2013 (if not before).

I have started to play with some protective styling, but find that the more I focus on my hair the worse it seems to do but when I just ignore it and WNG (I'm CG) then it grows like mad.

I take vitamins and probiotics and may start taking MSM again and, of course, drink plenty of water and eat well.

    We can do it!
3B with some 3a. Fell off but am now back on the CG bandwagon and looking for my HG products.

I'm totally down. I've been growing my hair since I started my transition in feb 2010. BCd in feb 2011. I'm currently at SL c6e4e365-e548-7407.jpg

I'm drinking tons of water and I'm using MN a couple times a week. I mix mine with oil. I haven't had a bad experience with it except bn a bit more itchy the next day. In late nov I experienced increased shedding but since then I've been doing tea rinses and that's helped a bunch. Well this is my 2 cents happy growing.

I also use coconut oil, argan oil, castor oil, shea butter and I've done a blend with argan, jojoba, tea tree, peppermint, basil, castor, hemp, lavender, frankincense, Rosemary, carrot seed and ylang ylang oils to help my hair recover from all the damage caused by years of heat.

I am trying the following: green tea and nightly scalp massage with a mix of jojoba, rosemary and tamanu oils. This leaves me with nasty hair in the morning, so I decided to put it up on non-cowash days. This am I dampened my hair, added gel and tried to tie it back into two braids along the sides. Clumps immediately made their bid for freedom. Clearly not long enough yet. :( So I threw on a scarf and away as I had no time to start again.
Anyhoo, my mini-goal is to get it long enough to tie back in some form. Any form. Lol.

Hey ladies, I need help. I want to buy biotin to help my hair grow but I don't know which one to buy. I keep seeing 300, 1000, 5000g and others but I don't know what it means. My hair is 3c if that matters. Can someone help?

I think it's just the amount of biotin in each vitamin tablet. I take biotin just in my daily multivitamin, so I think the lowest value you mentioned will be enough, but some people say more biotin helps hair to grow faster. I'm not sure, because vitamins surplus to the body's needs are normally just stored or are excreted, so it's up to you. Any one of those you mentioned ought to help, go for more if you want to be cautionary. Hope this helped!
  • Nikki3bNikki3b Posts: 327Registered Users
Biotin is a vitamin. The recommended amount is 300mcg per day but you can take up to 5000 mcg per day. 100 mcg is equal to 1 mg just for reference because certain brands with use different measurements. I take be beautiful by GNC which has 3000mcg or 3 mg which is really the amount you need to actually see a difference. I've taken this for about three years with great results. Thicker nail and hair. As far as growing faster, not really. I'm a nurse if your wondering where I get my info from
  • Nikki3bNikki3b Posts: 327Registered Users
You can take the cheaper brand of biotin that you can get from target or Walmart but the fillers in those cause breakouts in most people. Yes they're cheap and of low quality. I like the GNC because it has quality ingredients. It also has other things such as alpha lipoic acid, DAME, and other things that helps. It cost 20$ for a two month supply with is not bad I hope this helps 😊
  • SedadicaSedadica Posts: 124Registered Users
Thanks to all. It does help. The only issue is that I don't have a walmart or walgreens around here as I live in the UK. But I have to healthy stores here that sell it. Maybe they are the good brands. I'll try it as i'll be buying it tomorrow.

Every six months or so I join a grow out challenge. Then within 2 months or so I see a bad ass haircut I want and chop it all off. I've been battling with this since 2007/2008... 4 years later I'm going to try this yet again.

My avatar to the left is my most current pic (like a week ago) so at the moment I am natural, short and extremely a light golden blonde (color is way lighter) on top; my sides and back are my natural color (dark-brown/blackish).

Since I havent cut my hair since Oct/November...I'm joining the challenge..

    Wish me luck!!
