Coconut Oil Deodorant

I became a little worried after reading all the crazy ingredients in antiperspirants. My mom had been telling me about all the benefits of coconut oil and bought me a jar. I found this recipe online and decided to try it out.

  • 3 T Coconut Oil
  • 3 T Baking Soda
  • 2 T Shea Butter
  • 2 T Cornstarch
  • A few drops of teatree oil
After mixing it, I scooped it into an old deodorant container and I keep it in the refrigerator so it wont melt. It actually works, even when I work out. And I love the way it smells, I literally smell edible. My armpits feel much softer but the oil can stain certain fabrics. It washes out though. Hopefully this will benefit someone whose skin is irritated by traditional antiperspirants or who wants to try something different.

There's an older thread around here with a similar recipe that I've tweaked and have been using for a while now. I love my natural deodorant! No stink and very very little moisture on 100 F days.

If you find that it starts to irritate your skin, especially after shaving, then decrease the amount of baking soda and increase the cornstarch. Thats what I had to do for myself and my daughter.

I will have to try out that recipe when I'm able to purchase some Shea butter. In the meantime, I used this recipe and so far so good. :)

5-6 Tbsp coconut oil (I used 1 Tbsp of vanilla scented Tahiti coconut oil, yum!)
    1/4 c baking soda
1/4 c cornstarch( can also use arrowroot)
Essential oils of choice (I used lavender but want to try tea tree oil)

It smells so yummy!! I gave some to my mom and let my daughter try it out. I'm going to put some in my husbands old deodorant stick and sneak it into his medicine cabinet. I'm hoping it will work for him.

Thanks for sharing!! Off to find that old thread.....

Me, too! Over the past couple of years, it's gotten so that I can't wear any regular antiperspirant or deodorant without terrible irritation. One time in particular it literally burned a large patch under one of my arms - couldn't even wear a bra for a couple of days.

Even all natural ones like Lafe's (my favorite - thanks, Saria!) and Tom's irritate me at times. And while they control odor OK, they don't do much about wetness, nor do they claim to.

When I'm really irritated and can't use even those, I've found that I can apply California Baby Calming Diaper Rash Cream a couple times a day and it works pretty well while it helps heal - it contains lavendar and, tea tree oil, so I'm sure that's why it also helps with odor. Smells good, too. Doesn't help with wetness, though.

You can use just about any oil. If you try a liquid oil like olive, it will just be more of a loose paste instead of a solid with coconut oil. My favorite is with rice bran oil.

I have made a similar recipe with olive oil for me and DH. We but got pit burn until I removed the scent oils and halved the baking soda. So it's currently 1 part baking soda, 2 parts corn starch, oil of your choice to make a paste. Love it!!! It's summer here and we are odour free and dry. :) I will try coconut oil next time for the yummy natural scent.

What kind of old deodorant container are y'all using? One from a solid stick deodorant? Do you just packe it down in there solidly, let it set in the fridge and then you can wind it up like you did with the original product?
    - sorry, lots of questions, LOL!

Thanks, that makes a bit more sense - I wondered if the other type container would actually work. I hate the solid sticks, personally, anyway.

I actually melted all my ingredients and pured them (semi-melted) into an old (cleaned) deodorant stick. Worked just fine :-).

How long will it last refrigerated? Not refrigerated? How do I know if it has gone bad?

Thanks for the info I tried the baking soda alone in the past and burnt my skin raw so I was skeptical of these recipes calling for baking soda but will try your method

Doesnt the corstarch increase the risk of yeast?

I make mine with arrowroot powder instead of corn starch.. don't know how exactly they differ in that respect. i have barely any baking soda in mine and am still getting a rash:? I just started doing this about a month ago.. I may try it without the tea tree and see.

I think an alternative is arrowroot powder.
