Do you use a LI?

LeanneMLeanneM Registered Users Posts: 211 Curl Neophyte
When I first bought the Curly Girl book last year and went CG, I noticed that Lorraine Massey said not to leave conditioner on wavy hair, and I've been following her advice since then. I have fine hair that is easily weighed down, so I haven't been using a LI conditioner at all.

Last month, though, I went to a new Deva stylist who left quite a bit of One C in my hair -- and (surprisingly!) it didn't turn limp or look greasy near the root area. Since I'm really struggling with frizz, I thought I would try a LI.

Do any of you fine-haired wavies use a LI? If so, are there any light-weight ones you'd recommend? Do you perhaps just use a bit of your regular conditioner?

My hair loves protein, so I'm open to any that have that ingredient.

Thanks in advance!

    It varies, but yes.

If I use a very moisturizing styler like CJ CCCC I will use it as both LI and styler. If I don't use a moisturizing styler I will add a LI in low dews. Sometimes I'll add a little of whatever RO I've used but I only use a pea sized amount. Other times I'll use specific LI's like a few of them I have from Darcy's Botanicals that I absolutely love. My absolute fave isn't even on the site yet, I got a sample of it in my orders (two samples two orders) from the Black Friday sale. It smells YUMMY and my hair loves it.

My hair isn't that fine, but I have found that KCKT is pretty lightweight and works really well for me. It's a little pricey for a drugstore brand (something like $10 at Target) but I love it. I use approximately two quarter sized blobs for my layered, slightly past shoulder length hair. HTH.

I also used to stay away from leave ins because my hair is not dry and I have a weak wave pattern. Then a stylist did what your did and I saw loose ringlets form before my eyes (she had me standing over the bowl as she did it).
I use either CJ Beauticurls LI or Deep Fix. I literally use less than a dime size and scrunch it into soaking wet hair (while still in the shower). I apply it ends up while hanging my head upside down.
More than that and it is too moisturizing for me.

Thanks, kimmidawn and justajesuschick! I have KCKT but it doesn't play well with my hair. I might try the CJ products since I love the ones I've tried so far!

Have you tried using the CCCC lite as a leave-in? It doesn't have any curl enhancing properties for me but it is moisturizing.

Otherwise my favorite leave-ins are CJ Beauticurls leave-in, CJ Curl Rehab (just a tiny amount though) and Marie Dean Red Clover Honey leave-in.

Last winter (when I first went CG), I had great results with CCCL, but since then it hasn't been working well for me. I think I might try the CJ Beauticurls since both you and Justajesuschick recommended it. Thanks!

I used to use a LOT of LI every time I washed my hair since my hair was so dry and moisture-hungry. Now that it's gotten healthier, I need so much less moisture....so much so, that I don't even use a LI now. I pretty much went LI-free since the fall, and I just attempted to use some a week ago. LIs are definitely "frizz-busters," so I think you might like experimenting with them. I never tried a "real" LI conditioner -- I just used to use a little of my RO conditioner. Suave and VO5 conditioners make great, light LIs. I also liked Tresemme Naturals conditioners for LIs when I needed more moisture.

    Good luck!

So one more question: do you apply your LI even to your root area? I always get so greasy that I'm worried about this, even though the frizzies at the top of my head are the worst ones!

It DOES smell delicious it's like a cream type smell. YUM!

No I pretty much keep the LI other than oils from my scalp area. I will smooth some oil over my dry hair at top but that's it. I get fairly CLOSE to the scalp but not ON it.

Thanks so much, Rymorg2, for answering all my questions! I think that my problem had been that I've been getting the LI too close to my roots -- and it created a greasy hair disaster! :-| I will try keeping it more on the middle and ends of my hair! Thanks!:toothy4:

I just started CG yesterday, but even when I used a lowpoo before CG, I've been using a leave-in. The leave-in I use is Fairy Tales Energizing Leave-In, which is pretty lightweight, natural/organic, CG friendly, and has wheat and soy proteins. I love this stuff! It's perfect for my hair. You can get it at Ulta for around $9 or off Amazon. Also, I get no frizz with this, and it gets rid of chlorine pretty well for the summer. It's my HG now!

Another good leave-in is Beautiful Curls Leave-in for Wavy to Curly Hair. I think it can be found at Wholefoods. I think it's more expensive, though, and the Fairy Tales one works a lot better (for me, at least.)

I literally started like 10 days ago. I've been using a LI, something I have never done before, and I think it helps. I have fine, thin hair. After I rinse the conditioner out, I flip my hair upside down, scrunch out a bit of water with my hands, scrunch in about a pea sized amount of my rinse out conditioner, then scrunch with a t shirt. Then I scrunch in some gel, and diffuse quickly. My hair dries super fast. I've just been using a garnier fructis conditioner I picked up at CVS.

Hi! I am a really coarse 2B with lots of gray so that doesn't help with the frizzies.

For some reason, I've had pretty good luck using Deva One C as a leave in, more than a rinse out, conditioner. I add a dime sized amount after drying my hair a bit. And I do distribute it all over and kind of finger comb it through.

This works out also since that stuff is SO expensive. It lasts a lot longer this way. Btw.. I use Garnier Triple Condition as my rinse out.

Thanks, mamakaty and Honeyb0000! I'm going to try to make it to Ulta on Thursday and will pick up a few of the suggested brands.

I've got a lot of greys, too, and they certainly don't help with the frizzies! ;-)

Using a LI every day might be overkill if you co-wash. Start with small amts and work your way up. If you find yourself getting weighed down then skip the LI or up your protein.

Thanks, Wavysue! I don't co-wash since doing so seemed to make my hair feel especially greasy, but I appreciate the reminder of upping the protein a bit if my hair seems to need it. Even after being CG for a year, I feel like this is still such a learning process for me!
