your hair HIGHS and LOWS of 2011

luvmylocsluvmylocs Posts: 7,578Registered Users
hey ladies, i started a similar thread on the non-hair board but let's share one hair HIGH and one hair LOW from this year.

i'll start...

HIGH: i got sisterlocks!!! can't express how happy this makes me!!
LOW: i went to a reputable and popular natural hair salon, the stylist didn't say a word to me the whole time, my hair was blow dried from being wet, it was cut while my back was to the mirror and i left feeling pretty unhappy with my experience and the handling of my hair. i didn't speak up for myself (my bad) but i had such high hopes of getting my hair on track. at least i decided to not go back.
a dreamy pisces :fish:
please recycle, it matters...
i change lives...through fitness
i'm more relaxed being natural

High: I colored my hair a few times and I loved it everytime except one (tried to go red, but came out burgundy, luckily it's only in the tested spot)

Low: My hair has not been as moisturized as when I was using Shea Moisture products back when I first went natural earlier this year...I know what I buying for the new year!!! =D

*Starting the year off with un-damaged hair. It felt good to let all of that unrepairable damage go.

    Low
*Wasting my money on sucky products

High- Freeing my locs!!! 💆 I loved my locs, but they'd run their course.

Low- giving up on the LAST NINE LOCS and CUTTING THEM!! 💇 I was just exhausted and didn't see myself spending another 9 hours picking them out. So, I had to end up shaping my hair up and cutting it when I could have had a BAA from jump. SMH. Oh well. What's done is done. 💋

I'm still ending the year happy. :)

HIGH: My big chop of course!

LOW: When I was still transitioning, I did mini-twists that started loc'ing at the roots. I took them out and detangled over THREE DAYS. This is kinda a high too though, as it was the fear/dread of having to detangle two textures again that led me to pick up the scissors. Woop woop! :D
My hair is in the 4s, low in porosity, high in density and coarse. :happy6:

Love: QB - all of it, Bobeam - shampoo bars, Darcy's Botanicals - Pumpkin Seed Conditioner, Coconut Cupuacu Pomade, KBN - Shealoe Leave-in, Oyin - Juices & Berries, Kinky Curly - Knot Today, Ayurvedic treatments, my Denman and the cloud of kinky goodness on my head that I get to play with! :love8:

High: My styling is improving where my bad hair days are becoming less frequent.

Low: Not retaining as much length as I'd have liked. I had kinky twist extensions for two months last winter and upon takedown, my ends were so ragged that I had to cut off 1 1/2 inches of hair, which was about the amount that had grown while the extensions were in. I've had to dust my ends twich since then but they still look a little off. I've always been bad at sealing my ends consistently so I have to make it a new year's resolution.

High: Finding a routine that works with my hectic and very unpredictable day to day schedule. I no longer dread "hair day."
Finding the products that don't work with my hair or skin and products that I know my hair will love.
Finally, finding my version of PS and overall time saver. Keep a cute hat on!

Low: Co-Washing, it is not my friend.
Still not being and to flat twist or conrow

High: I finally learned how to style my hair and I know how to keep it moisturized. Taking iron supplements helped my hair growth get back on track.

Low: T his is really a low that happened at the end of 2010. I decided to cut my hair into a tapered TWA. I took off about 3ish inches after I'd already grown my hair out some from my BC in May. I basically cut off all my progress. My hair growth slowed to a snail's pace and I discovered after months of frustration that I was anemic and that was contributing to my slow growth.

+1 at the bolded. Every product that doesn't work is a huge low for me. I just hate that 'I wasted my money' feeling.

High: My hair being noticeably longer both when straight and curly, finally getting past a length that its been stuck at for SO long.
Also, perfecting my regimen and figuring out the proper way to apply my leave in and seal so that I get consistent results and longer lasting moisture (the struggle last year)

LOW: Realizing how healthy my hair was before I dyed it and how much it set me back. It not only broke off but straightened my ends like heat damage.. The undyed portion is pretty much fully transitioned. Now as the damaged dyed part grows out I have to cut off some of the healthy hair to make it uniform, weak. sauce.

High: Chopping off the last of my relaxed hair in April. I'm so glad I did.

Low: Realizing I am allergic to hair pins--as if styling wasn't already difficult enough.

High: I discovered that my hair loves Henna. 

Low: It took me 2 years to start wearing protective styles and to take my time detangling my hair. I probably pulled several inches of hair out because of this. I know better now! 

This would have to be one of my lows too. I really need to go back to the Dr and get more iron pills. I'm sure my body and hair would appreciate it.

High: I got to mid back length stretched; found two products that work really well for me (Curl Junkie Coffee Coco Curl Cream and the forbidden Afroveda Curl Define; prefer the Curl Junkie); the heat damage on that one lock of hair in the front is almost grown out.

Low: never got the ovaries to get my hair trimmed and styled in a salon.

Getting my hair heat damaged in the front (at a mall kiosk no less) last year really taught me how I take my otherwise healthy, super curly, kinky hair for granted.

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."

Ending 2011 with only an inch or two to go until APL. After hacking off a good bit of hair (calling myself trying to trim my own hair) I still made it pretty close to my year in goal.

Really discovering the nature of my hair. That it has fine to medium strands, normal porosity, and possibly protein sensitive. Didn't figure this out until close to the end of the year and it will help immensely when trying new products in the future.

    LOW
Doing protein treatments when my hair obviously didn't need them. *sigh* It took me forever to figure out why protein treatments like Aphogee 2 Minute and protein leave-ins would leave my hair feeling worse off after doing them. I'm in recorvey mood now and OD on moisture by moisturizing everyday and DCing with every wash until my hair goes back to normal.

Buying a bunch of stuff that didn't work, doesn't really fit into my regimen, or expired before I could finish using it.

High: my hair got to APL, longer than it has ever been. Ever.

Low: Getting my hair done in August by these ignorant girls who thought it would be cool to talk in another language about my disgusting, low-class, difficult natural hair and why I couldn't just get a perm. And losing more hair to their dry combing than I have ever lost in one detangling session...even after that time I decided to wear mini-twists for five weeks (that was a fail :?).

Silly women thought I didn't understand them, even after I got on them for saying some other rude isht about me.

High: My hair grew from shoulder length to BSL in 7 months. And I big chopped!
Low: My hair was in super condition when it was relaxed, but being natural, I'm having trouble with working with it. And I don't prefer short hair and miss putting my hair into a ponytail, so my goal for 2012, is a pony puff!
