Hairspray - who can't live w/out it?

NocurlB4babiesNocurlB4babies Posts: 179Registered Users
I must be one of a few that can't live without hairspray. Even since going CG...I just can't handle willy-nilly hair with no hold. I use a hard hold gel, but my hair is fine/ wavy and needs a finisher to keep it in place. I've been using Pantene curls pump spray (not an aerosol). Anyone else in the boat that I'm in...and if so... what spray do you use? I'm open to suggestions.

I like the rave level 4 from walmart. It's cheap and has great long hold!!

I still use it sometimes! I use GF flexible hold. It has no cones, the hold isn't "net-like", but it keeps it controlled. Decent hold but touchable, I guess.

When I curl my bangs I use a harder hold hairspray on them to keep the swept-over look in place.

While I can go without and still have acceptable hair, I get more volume and wave definition that lasts all day if I use some right after I SOTC.

My hair holds up better (a lot better) if I spray it but I keep it to once a week or less out of fear it will dry it out, since the hair has been in such good condition and I'm not sure if ditching the hairspray is part of that.

I use the Tresemme Naturals hairspray, it has a short ingredient list. Really strong fragrance though so not good if you are sensitive to that.

It's interesting seeing how many people use and love hairspray! :) I never really experimented with it, but I think if I did use something as a final product for long-lasting control, it would be a spray gel. I don't know why, but I was never drawn to hairspray as a product, probably because it just feels so icky (even to me, and I like using lots of gel ;)). Ha ha, go figure!

Spray gel is nothin' like hairspray. I don't think it would work right, and with as much hair as you have, no way you could get it distributed around your hair...

WavyNWild, I also like CCCCLite mixed with a little gel as a final-hold product sometimes, emulsify these between hands, dab gently around hair with head upside down, reach inside the hair, scrunch; then again with head right side up and then smooth the little bit left over the top layer of hair. This is sort of the opposite of hairspray but does provide a little additional hold.

But nothing works like hairspray. It doesn't feel good but my hair looks spectacular with a good dose of hairspray, always do this for a night out.

I don't like anything for a final product that I have to use hands to put in cuz it feels it makes it frizzier

I agree also that my hair looks better, more defined with spray after I scrunch & fluff a little. I don't airdry, but I diffuse and am fully dry before I leave the house. I suppose for those that airdry and have damp hair for a long time...hairspray would probably feel pretty nasty (ha). I wish I was a 'low maintenance' girl, just don't think I'll ever be. I thought that going CG would be easier/ quicker in the AM...that was just my crazy thinking (ha)

I air dry and my hair doesn't feel nasty with the hairspray, i like the crunchy most times so I like it a lot and since it air dries it gives it a lil more time to do its thing I guess u cld say?!?! Like where and how it wants to lay

Ever since I found Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz about a year ago, I'm back to using spray again most days. I don't have to use so much gel and can use a softer one as long as I have this for my top and front.

    • It's almost totally alcohol-free
    • Almost no scent and none that lingers
    • Hair is still touchable yet it holds well
    • Doesn't build up or flake at all
    • Mostly natural, organic ingredients
    • A little goes a long way, so a bottle lasts me a long time. I'm only on my second or third one for the year - I think this is still #2.
The only things I don't like about it is that it's not readily available 'on the ground' - I order a couple of bottles at a time. And the top of the pump bottle doesn't screw off, so if you need to open it for some reason, it takes really strong hands or a bottle opener or something to pry it open.

I pay about $7 a bottle on-line. I haven't checked any health food stores, but they probably have it, but it's likely more expensive . . . .

CORRECTION: It's less than $5 - see the link in the other post below

I am a hairspray junkie and recently discovered One n Only Argan Oil Hairspray at Sally's. LOVE IT!! I wasn't that impressed w/ the other products in this line, but after hearing a lot of raves, got the hairspray and I've been so happy with it! It's just under $9 w/ your Sally card, kind of pricey for a Sally hairspray, I think, but totally worth it!

Is it cone & glycerin free? No ingredients on Sally's site..

I can live without hairspray, I don't even think I could dry out my hair without fixing it with more condish so that doesn't even bother me. What I hate is the next day my hair feels so dirty and they tend to flake on me plus it's hard to wash co-wash out if I use it regularly. I'd love to find a finishing spray that holds well, doesn't make my hair feel dirty, doesn't build up & doesn't flake. Is that too much to ask for ? :p I'm gonna check out the homemade spray mentioned. I also find Spray Gel doesn't do squat in comparison. My waves are weaker in Winter so I wouldn't mind finding a good spray right about NOW

Del, I think the LA Hold Hair Spritz does everything you list . . . I can't stand spray gels, either. They don't dry fast enough and just make a gunky mess, IMO

Hairspray is my only setback from going completely CG. My hair is so fine that even when I blow it all out or diffuse it upside down it doesn't hold the volume for long. So I LOVE hairspray because it really helps set my style in place. At the same time I hate the way hairspray makes my hair feel. The days I go without using hairspray I cant seem to get enough of running my fingers through my curls. I use Herbal Essences body envy hairspray (aerosol) and mousse and I love the smell. The hairspray makes my hair kinda sticky but it holds really well. I've tried so many hairsprays in the past year and I still haven't found one I'm completely satisfied with.

I agree with you, they don't dry fast enough & they tend to squirt instead of spray :p I also buy stuff from Lucky Vitamin on a regular basis so I may just try the LA. I tried making the homemade sugar hair spray but used too much sugar lol It made my hair extremely POOFY for some odd reason. I may try it again on 2nd day hair instead of freshly washed damp hair, it would probably work better on bone dry hair. Then again it may not work at all  Here is a recipe if anyone is interested in trying it.

LOL, that reminds me of a story I heard Walter Cronkite tell about his first date with his wife. She had used sugar water when she set her hair (used to be common), and as soon as she walked out of the house, she was swarmed by some kind of insects - yellow jackets, I think, though I don't remember for sure.

I've had gnats and mosquitos do that a couple of times when I've used some of my more natural hair products!

Well I don't want bugs chasing me around that's for sure! Right now no bugs so I gave this sugar spray a 2nd go on DRY hair. It actually holds really well, it's like using a pump spray hair spray. When I used to use spray I preferred the aerosol style because it wasn't as sticky but now it seems I can't find one without CONES or protein. Once it gets warmer I won't need the hold anyway but for now this could work on 2nd day when I need the lift.

just a hint too, don't use the sugar water in humid environments, your hair will never, ever dry.

    ever....

Its so humid here, that even in the winter, I can use full on hairspray and its not crunchy in about an hour, I don't have to "scruch the crunch".

    craziness I tell you!
