4a/3c Men's hair health.

'Ehem, to start this off let me emphasize the fact that I am a Man. Myth or not, men don't know very much about hair, and specially their own hair and they really don't actually care.
I fit right into that category, except that I DO care about how my hair looks.
Well, anyways, I just need some hair-health guidance .

My hair is about 2 1/2 - 3 inches long so far (It grows so slowwww). My hair texture is 3c/4a and a little 4b on the sides. Now, recently my hair has been feeling really dry and not soft at all. My curls don't seem to look as defined as well, and I'm only in possession of a Taliah Waajid conditioner, cheap hair greases like 'SuperGrow' and a few shampoo's that I refuse to use.

I really just need some products that I can use for my naturally dry hair.
I've tried using Homemade conditioners , but they're a mess to make and don't seem to make a difference.
I just want my hair to feel softer and more manageable.
I'm thinking of getting a trim and seeing if that works out my issue, but 'till then I'll need some product suggestions.
Hair Texture: 4a/4b/3a/3b/3c
Predominantly 4a texture. 4B on small parts of my edges. 3C/b/a on the back and behind the ears.
Shampoo: Taliah Waajid - Balck Earth Shampoo
Conditioner: Taliah Waajid - Herbal conditioner
Leave-In: Beautiful Curls/Taliah Waajid - Curl Enhancing Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner/ leavin
Styler: Pantene - Curly Hair style Mousse
Taliah Waajid: Curl Sealer

Big Chop? Hah, no.

    Hey Mannie,
Welcome to the forum. Have you tried co-washing for a little while. Co-washing is just shampooing the hair with conditioner. I started co-washing about six months ago, went to see my stylist for a protein treatment and style and she noticed how soft my hair was. I try to drink more water, I take 5000mg of Biotin everyday, eat dark green vegetables, and it has made a huge difference in my hair, and nails. The growth is unbelieveable, and I can't believe how soft my hair is. I can't use oils in my hair because I get pimples on my scalp, so I stick to creams and chemical-free gels. I have been using Shea Moisture Yucca Conditioner and Shampoo. I only use the shampoo when my hair has build up, other than that I co-wash at least once a week, and deep condition. I am dating a Pathologist and he suggested the Biotin about a year ago, and it has been a great help. Since then I have done research and learned that this is very helpful for women with hair loss or thinning, but it is also strengthens the hair, along with vitamins. Try the co-washing for two or three months, then see your hairdresser, and see if he or she notices a difference. Don't forget to drink plenty of water. Good Luck :occasion5::occasion5::hello2::hello2::hello2:

Co-Washing? Not too sure 'bout that. Depends on what Shampoo though.
My hair is like, very vulnerable to Shampoo because of the sulfates. I'll try it if I ever come across a sulfate-free Shampoo.
And, Biotin? I've heard of that somewhereeeee. Where could I get it?

First of all, welcome, and second of all, you have not been looking har enough for a non-sulfate shampoo lol. There are so many of them out there, a few that come to mind:
    Shea Moisture Coconut/Hibiscus Shampoo
Shea Moisture Yucca and Aloe Shampoo
Shea Moisture Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo
    Shea Moisture Raw Shea Shampoo
the above are available at Target (and walgreens.com)

Renpure My Pretty Hair is Parched Shampoo
Rempure I Love My Hair Shampoo
the above are available at renpure.com, CVS, and walgreens

iciNaturals Tea Tree and Neem Shampoo
available at icinaturals.com and amazon.com and occasionally at Marshalls

Third, co-washing is washing with conditioner, not using shampoo at all. This is another option sans sulfates (read the ingredients: some conditioners have sulfates) Some people do this exclusively, and some folks alternate co-washing and sulfate-free shampoos.

Yeah, If so , then I've been co-washing for about three months now. xP
Well, I haven't really set my mind towards searching for organic, sulfate, wheat-free shampoos. In fact, I've been trying to do the No Poo method. My main issue is just finding the right products, and you've seemed to clear up part of it, so I say Thank you.♥

I'm not magic-man a treating my hair, but I'm trying pretty hard. I've just been having pretty bad hair days over the past week. My hair's just been very dry and limp, crunchy and such.

    Just a thought:

Some people do not experience this, but is it possible your recent bad hair days are due to the change in seasons? It happens to me (happening to me today - AARGH!) when the humidity and dew points swing back and forth until they settle on a routine, because then I know what to do with my hair. Maybe it will settle down in a couple of weeks.

And, that was a cool thing you said in the "Hall of Shame" forum. We do wonder if there are men out there who like, instead of just tolerate, our hair.

Don't use any grease or things that have mineral oil as 1st ingredient it clogs the pores..when its wet and like damp put a moose or gel or hair lotion...I sometimes use body lotion but my friends think I'm crazy..then mix the product throughout your hair with your hands and leave it alone or brush\comb it back but don't touch it just w8 til it dries!

It might be, but I think I used too much of that Pink lotion hair moisturizer. I'm uncertain to whether that stuff is good or not for hair. e.o
Oh, and Thank you! I was just being honest, I spoke for myself and lots of other men.

Hey Mannie - I definitely support the co-washing routine. I have 4ish type hair and co-washing has really helped it grow and I think it gives me pretty healthy, resilient hair. I think what you may be looking for are some more natural products. I know that the more I used natural conditioners and styling products my hair became noticeably softer and more touchable. Here are just a few conditioner recommendations:

Tresemme Naturals Moisture Conditioner (at most drug stores)
Kinky Curly Knot Today (at Whole Foods and online)
Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle (at Trader Joes)
Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner (online and at Whole Foods...I think)

These are by far the best ones I have used over the past few years and the Tresemme Naturals is my consistent go to. Oh and if you're looking for an everyday moisturizer I would highly recommend you try Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie (at Walgreens and some other drug stores). Let us know if you find anything that works! HTH

PS I love my hair too, man! :afro:

I've heard a lot of good things from KCCC, but sadly I'm almost or, pretty much broke. XD
Plus, some of these hair products are very expensive!

Welcome Mannie...as soon as u read this throw that pink lotion away like its a bomb....that product stunt my growth and made my hair so dry it look like a rug...co washing really does help cause your getting that daily moisture you need. Also inexpensive products like V05 and
Tresemes natural conditioner actual work. I'm especially surprised at the new treseme natural brand cause it's older products usually dryed my hair. Give these products a try and tell us the verdict

    Some cheap KCCC alternatives:
-Garnier Fructis Pure Clean Gel (hard hold)
-Kiss MY Face Upper Management Gel (medium hold)
-Queen Helene Royal Curling Gelly (or some such - be careful with this - a little goes a LONG way, and some complain the high glycerin content can dry them out - me included)

all of the above are under $10 in most places.

Threw out the pink lotion. It was taking up space in my cabinet, and didn't do anything but damage my hair. Now, what I'm really in need of is a god daily conditioner, I've heard about Jessy/Jessie curl products and i think I might buy a few products from them.. Thank you guys for keeping the thread going, this is really helping out.
