Real camera for a 4 year old and an almost 6 year old for Christmas?

NalliaNallia Posts: 2,979Registered Users
I want to get my kids cameras for Christmas so they leave mine alone. LOL Does anyone have any recommendations? Are the V-Tech or Fisher Price cameras worth it? I want something that will take decent pictures. My kids take pretty good care of their things, but they are kids so are still rougher than I am.

My nieces have a kids camera... I'll see if I can get you a brand and review of it from my sister.

The little one has this one, but of course is always wanting to use our Olympus Stylus Tough...uh, no...lol

Thanks! They're both always wanting to use my Nikon D90 and I have to keep it up really high so they don't play with it when I'm not looking. Both have asked for a camera for Christmas so I'm thinking about making this their main gifts

Does the FP one take decent pics? I obviously don't need them to be DSLR quality, but I'd like them to be at least as clear as an iPhone camera.

I've known a couple little kids who got the kids cameras, and then very quickly tossed them aside to use real cameras as soon as possible, or whenever they could get their hands on one. If you think the kids won't literally be throwing it around and stuff, I would get them a real camera (that's cheap and pretty durable and easy to use, if you can find one).

Yep, pretty dang good. It even has a memory card.
I don't think kids need anything more than that...jmho
They certainly won't be getting one better than I have..lol
    It's 50 bucks...that's plenty for a kid, ya know?
I am not getting my kid a 100-200 dollar camera.... :dontknow:

This is what I'm debating about. With prices on point and shoot cameras continually going down, I keep wondering if I would just be better off buying them instead of one made specifically for children. All of my point and shoot cameras have been dropped a few times and have kept working fine. They've held up better to being dropped than my phone. LOL

That's the thing about this camera...it's been dropped tons...down the stairs...on the tile, etc.
My nephew had a Razr and dropped it...for sure the crystal display on the front of the phone cracked....

My 4 y/o niece has the FP one as the pic quality isn't great...it isn't even good...maybe the quality of an old camera phone. She enjoys it, but prefers our phones and cameras, especially since the screen is so small in the FP camera.

The iPhone camera is 8mp. Are kids cameras 8mp now?

If not, then get them a cheaper real, adult one.

My husband got my daughter one of the kid's cameras. It's pink, I have no idea what kind it is. It SUCKS. She was three at the time and was already using our cameras and phones so she wasn't used to having to hold it still for soooooo long and the pictures are useless.

She's five now and uses her iPod or my camera. As she also has a lot of music and wants to listen to it all the time, she mostly uses her iPod.

My kid had hubby's old ipod....fail....messed it up by dragging the headphones around and such.
The FP really is pretty decent, tho I see that...
    I'm failing here

I haven't been impressed with any kid's cameras including the FP one although it's certainly durable. I'd get them a regular point and shoot and a case for it and emphasize that the camera goes in the case when you aren't using it. Maybe even see if you can find one with a neck strap.

My little sister is 4 and she has a pink camera like the one CGNYC mentioned. Its sucks big time, and she hardly ever plays with it.
I just want to do what I want to do when I want to do it.

I talked to my sister. Her kids got one of those kids cameras (FP, I think) two years ago, when they were the same age as your kids. She said she wouldn't recommend any of the kids cameras, but rather just buy a cheap point and shoot. They don't cost much more, and if you shop around you can gt one for cheaper, and the pictures will be INFINITELY better.

Don't bother with kid cameras. Point and shoot cameras are so cheap these days, it would be a waste of money buying a Fisher Price kid camera. Any camera made by a toy company can't be that great. :)

Check out eBay before you hit the stores.

I was just wondering HOW cheap cameras really are. Well, BestBuy.com has 34 digital cameras listed for under $50! Some of them are clearly geared towards kids, but not necessarily the "kids cameras".

My nephew (4 yo) has the VTech one and I agree, it's a POS. The pictures are all grainy and blurry although he doesn't seem to care. He likes putting hats on all of us and inserting things like monkeys, etc. I would skip the kids' camera and just get a cheapie point and shoot like others have said.
I haven't got the slightest idea how to change people, but I still keep a long list of prospective candidates just in case I should ever figure it out.

Last year one of my cousins got a kids Polaroid camera. She loved it because the pictures came out instantly. She loved waiting for them to dry to see how they turned out, carrying them around, and showing/giving them to people.

Idk if that's exactly what you are looking for, but it's another option you might not have thought of originally!

Otherwise I would go for the cheap digital camera (the one marketed towards kids but still is pretty much a cheap adult camera) that other people mentioned.
