RCW: Went off b/c, now skin breaking out

LoloDSMLoloDSM Posts: 3,778Registered Users
Help! I went off the pill in August and my skin has been breaking out since September. I'm pretty sure the breakouts are from going off b/c because my back is breaking out too. :-( I am not trying to get pregnant, so I can use salicylic acid if that's what you would suggest.

I currently use Skin Bio P&R classic and LacSal cream. I also use Retin-A micro. Should I increase how often I use Retin-A? Switch to Exfol Cream and Tri-Reduction cream? Use a BHA peel?

I am 41 and don't like the idea of taking hormonal b/c, but this looks bad. My forehead keeps breaking out with clogged pores. :-(

I don't want to go back to the derm who prescribes irritating topical creams and oral antibiotics. I wish I could take Accutane again, but I don't think "they" would let me unless I jump through all the hoops again. :-(

Any suggestions are welcome!

I feel your pain. I've been breaking out terribly the last few months, which I'm sure is from my recent arrival at the state of menopause. I had been struggling to keep it under control, and I also would like to go back on Accutane, but don't want the hassles (which I'm currently going through with my daughter). I have found something that works great though.

You are familiar with Clarisonic? Well, I broke my second one, and my pores were getting really cloggy, but I didn't want to buy another because the Clarisonic helped a little, but never actually got me totally clear. I decided to try a different type of ultrasonic device, without the dirty brush. It's called Ezzi-Peel. It's a "spatula-like" blade (not sharp) that glides along skin and oscillates ultrasonically (almost inperceptably) and clears the gunk out of the pores. It's so gentle, I get zero irritation. I've been using it for 2 weeks and I'm completely clear...and my pores are invisible...probably for the first time in my life. It's $250. Sorry...beauty is expensive. I like it so much that I might spring for the $595 salon version. If I had known ultrasound facials were so wonderful, I would have invested in this long ago.

Not sure what to say about the back acne. I've never had to deal with that. I'd probably just alternate between the 3 main anti-bacterials that I usually use for acne...benzoyl peroxide, sulfer, and Hibiclens (surgical soap...Walgreens makes a generic version without the awful pink dye that the brandname one has). I alternate between them because my acne seems to develop a resistance to each of these, but I can get them working again if I take breaks and use something else for a while.

Acne sucks. Acne as an older woman is downright unfair.

Dam* you! Now I want the Ezzi Peel. However, I did have the Clarisonic and can't use it. My skin is so sensitive that it made me red and it was uncomfortable. I was using the gentle brush and tried not to push. Do you think I could tolerate the Ezzi Peel?

I realize you can't guarantee anything.

    Thanks

Thank you for the thorough response, RCW. The Ezzi Peel looks cool. Unfortunately, I can't spend the $$$ with the holidays coming up.

I've been using a benzoyl peroxide wash and cream. Hopefully my skin will calm down soon. It's not fair that I have gray hair AND acne. The two should be mutually exclusive IMO.

I just ordered Norwex bath cloths which might help. They are microfiber cloths with colloidal silver woven into them for antibacterial properties. The microfiber should help with extra exfoliation. I love Norwex for cleaning kitchen grease -- maybe it will help my skin too.

Yeah, I know it's expensive. I hate to recommend expensive stuff.

If benzoyl peroxide ever works for you, but just isn't working right now, you might want to try alternating with something else, as I mentioned above. We lucky folks, who have had years and years of acne, are deeply colonized with the acne-causing bacteria, and we need to fool it by switching up our disinfectants, otherwise it just becomes immune.

And use your disinfectant prophylactically, rather than just as a spot treatment. BP, sulpher, and hibiclens all work better at preventing outbreaks than treating them. That means applying a disinfectant to your trouble zones every night.

I'm not thinking the colloidal silver cloths will do much (other than keeping the cloths from growing quite so much bad stuff), but please let us know if you like them. I love microfiber cloths for exfoliating, but I buy the cheap ones and just cut them into small 4"x4" pieces, so I can dispose of them after a few uses and not have to worry about contamination. I can get a hundred little cloths out of the 5-pack-for-$5 from the automotive aisle at K-Mart.

It's really gentle. I can't imagine anyone getting irritated from it. But, you're right, I can't guarantee anything.

They have a 30-day-trial policy, where you can return it if you don't like it.

RCW, are you still using this thing? I emailed them yesterday about one and they left me a voicemail today. I could barely understand the dude and I'm a little leery of just sending someone information over the phone with no receipt or anything like that. Not immediately, anyway.

So, please let me know if you're still using and liking this contraption! :)

Yes, I do still use it...absolutely love it. I bought mine through Amazon, but I think that guy with the heavy accent in Long Island is the main USA distributor and is the seller that Amazon uses, so I think he's safe.

I also bought the pro version...found one slightly-used on Craig's List for cheap. Boy Howdy...does that one work fantabulous! So now my cordless Ezzi Peel is mostly used for travel. I am so addicted to clean pores that I can't go without these ultrasonic spatulas.

Have you had to send it in to have the battery replaced yet? I read on their website that once you need a new battery, they are the only ones who can replace and reseal it properly. They said they expected this every 12-18 months or so.

I have not. I've had my Ezzi Peel for almost a year, and it still charges fine and works for about 30 minutes between charges, which is how it was orginally. They say they can be charged about 300 times, so I'm probably getting close to needing a new battery. I still have another month or so of warranty, so I'm hoping it wears out before then. Not sure how much it costs to replace the battery.

That's what happened to my 2 Clarisonic scrubbers too...the batteries just wore out after being charged so many times and wouldn't take a charge anymore. I never tried to get those replaced, because the machine was just so gross and worn-out looking by that time that I just didn't want to send it anywhere.

My pro skin spatula is corded, so no battery issues with that one.

I'm REALLY on the fence about this. I know for sure that I want one but I'm not sure if I should get the corded one or cordless one. They say that the corded one is a little more powerful but the cordless one has more flexibility and would work even when the power went out down here.

The cordless one also has the "+" and "-" ion buttons. Do you use those enough to make it worth it? Do they actually do anything?

I actually tried to buy the corded one (UltraWave), but they sent me the cordless Ezzi Peel in error. I was going to send it back, but decided to keep it because I find returning things to be a major hassle. I wish I had gotten the corded one, because I think corded appliances last longer and retain their power longer. I don't use the ion feature at all. But I do still love the Ezzi Peel.

are they basically the same except one is cordless and one is not? do you use it on a wet or dry face?

Okay, thanks for making my decision for me! :)

I agree about the corded ones lasting longer but I wasn't sure about the ion feature.

Thank a lot for your help the past couple days with this. I'll let ya know what I think when it comes in... :)

Do you use it for the permeation action as well or just the exfoliation?

I only use it for exfoliation. I can't be bothered trying to get things to permeate better...I apply way too much stuff to spend time trying to get it to sink in deeper. It seems to sink in fine.

These ultrasonic spatulas need to be used on wet skin. They don't transmit their ultrasonic waves without moisture. I usually use my cleanser and water.

the ezzi peel. it was cheaper then the ultrawave. i can see a huge difference on my nose already.

I guess i should report on how the ezze peel is working.

I really like it. I can see a huge improvement in my skin. My sister has begun to use it as well. My pores havent seen to have shrunk much, but they are clearer. A lot less black heads! So far so good.
  • RedCatWavesRedCatWaves Posts: 31,259Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
I don't think anything really shrinks pores (maybe laser, but it's expensive and not reliable), but keeping them clean sure makes them a lot less noticable...and reduces breakouts in the long term.

And it is just so damn fun watching stuff come out of the pores as the Ezzi Peel passes over them...twice as fun because it doesn't cause the irritation and lumps that "picking" causes.
  • theliothelio Posts: 5,374Registered Users
As gross as it may sound, I love using it and watching all that gunk come out. Thats what got my sister interested in it. My skins feels and looks cleaner.

i was hoping that cleaning my pores really good would minimize them. and some of the reviews i read people claimed pore shrinkage. oh well, as long as i have clean pores.
  • alisons79alisons79 Posts: 680Registered Users
Okay, I got mine last week. I got the UltraWave version because I prefer corded versions to eliminate battery issues down the road.

I like it so far. But I do have to ask, how long does it take both of you to do this? I read in the pamphlet that it should take 15 minutes?!?! I can easily pass over my entire face in about 2 minutes.

Also, I have been washing my face with soap first, rinsing it off and then using the scrapper. I found if I tried to use the scrapper with the soap, my skin started to dry and I hate the feeling of soap drying on my face.

Am I using this thing the right way? :)

I just use water. I pass over my face several times in different directions. it takes about 15 minutes. maybe less.

I use Hibiclens when I use my spatula, and then keep adding water as it gets dry. Hibiclens is technically a soap (an anti-microbial surgical scrub really), but I don't find it drying at all. Occasionally, I use a spray toner that I have. I go over my face many times. I use my pro-spatula most of the time, and it takes about 10 minutes.

Some people use aloe vera gel (the fresh bottled kind), which is a nice healing gel that conducts ultrasound waves. Some people use real ultrasound gel. Most just use water.

I need to get an Ezzi Peel! Is amazon the best place to order from?

I have aloe vera, i will try that tonight. I also might but the hibiclens, i have heard it really helps. we use to carry it in my lab until Georgetown university claimed they were broke so cant supply us with it anymore. Broke my azz!:cwm10:

I found it cheapest on Amazon. the website wanted $250, I got it for closer to $200.

I get a bump every month on my left nostril without fail. its usually huge, red and very painful and can last for a week. This month its not nearly as huge or painful or red. Its even smaller today then it was yesterday. I dont think this one will last for a week. Not sure if the ez peel has any thing to do with it, but it is one heck of a coincidence.
  • RedCatWavesRedCatWaves Posts: 31,259Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
Shop around, but Amazon is often the most economical place to buy stuff.

I use Hibiclens as a "disinfectant" cleanser for my acne and it's just a happy accident that's it's gel-like and makes a good lubricant for my spatula. If anyone wants to try it, the best place to buy it is Walgreens. They have a store-brand knockoff that doesn't contain the awful pink dye that the brandname contains, so it's just clear and very pleasant to use. It's on the shelf, right next to the authentic Hibiclens.

Just a warning on Hibiclens...never, ever, use it in your ears. It damages hearing. Keep it out of the eyes too...but I think that goes without saying for all soaps. Just keep it on the skin.
  • theliothelio Posts: 5,374Registered Users
Thanks for the tip RCW. But I have a question, have you ever used your spatula anywhere else, like your back? I have had a pretty clean back for a while, but last week my sister pointed out my back looked pretty bad. I exfoliate and had my back looking pretty good. Now its looks a hot mess. Maybe the ez peel can help?
  • RedCatWavesRedCatWaves Posts: 31,259Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
If you can reach it, I don't see why you couldn't use the spatula on your back.
  • theliothelio Posts: 5,374Registered Users
I use it twice on my back, or my sister did. She says my back is looking clearer. I havnt gotten my monthly breakout yet. WHOO HOO!!

I try to use it everday. But sometimes I forget to charge it so when I go to use it, its dead. it seems fine if i miss a day or two. My skin is looking not so bad. Not the best, but pretty good.
