Something that helped

LoloDSMLoloDSM Posts: 3,778Registered Users
I have always had fine, thin hair, but over the last few months, I noticed it was thinning even more. I did some research, and started taking vitamin D3 a couple months ago. I now have re-growth that is a quarter inch long. !!! Obviously, YMMV, but it helped me. I think vitamin D3 comes from sunlight, which I avoid, so it makes sense I would have a deficiency. HTH!

I get confused about the different properties of the D's.

    Glad you had good results!

Lolo, that is really interesting! I started getting my D levels checked about 2 years ago and continue to be in range without supplementing beyond what my daily multi provides. Do you have any links that you could share regarding what you read?

I will look for them. It's been at least two months so it make take a little while to track them down.

I realize no cause and effect has been proven with vitamin D3/hair loss, but I was supposed to be taking a high dose of it anyway for an autoimmune problem. Once I saw it could help with hair growth, I immediately began taking it. :-)

This is fascinating to me! I saw an endocrinologist because my hair was thinning and I thought it was maybe my thyroid. All that was normal, but I was vitamin D deficient. Just started taking a multi with high levels of D3, I'll post on what is does for me :)

I hope you don't mind my asking...what brand of multi are you taking that has extra D? Or are they prescription?

I'm taking the GNC active multi. It has 1600 units or whatever they call it of D3, the recommended is 300. My Dr. told me to take at least 1000. It doesn't have that nasty vitamin aftertaste either, bonus!! :D

Thanks for the links Lolo, I looked for some info the other night when I first saw this thread but couldn't find anything on hair loss. I think I might give it a try as I have psoriasis and a tendency to high blood sugar so hopefully one of my issues will improve!

Vitamin d is so important. It supports the immune system which factos into everything. Oddly many docs dont check vitamin/mineral levels. Then many of the medications we use, rob vitamin/minerals from our body.
    Glad you're seeing results.
How have you been feeling? Did the docs ever figure out what was wrong?

My hormone Dr. told me to take (for hair loss) D3 5000 a day. I know it seems like a lot! He said he takes that amount himself. I have been taking it for about a year now; at the start I saw a difference, however I also started Biotin and thyroid meds, so can't tell what helped. But sadly the last couple months my hair has started falling out again.

I'm sorry you have that problem again. Did you change anything about your routine? Maybe the thyroid medication is causing the hair loss? Hope you find a solution soon. I've never heard of vitamin D3 but will try it and I will have my dr check my vitamin levels. Thanks to all who mentioned that.

To those taking vitamin D...it has been found to not be necessary to take as a supplement, and possibly even harmful. If your doc told you to take it, then take it, but this is articles has some good info to be aware of.
    See this NY Times article:
    /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2010%2F11%2F30%2Fhealth%2F30vitamin.html" class="Popup

Here's 2 quotes from the article:
"...some prominent doctors have said that most people need supplements or they will be at increased risk for a wide variety of illnesses, including heart disease, cancer and autoimmune diseases."

"Evidence also suggests that high levels of vitamin D can increase the risks for fractures and the overall death rate and can raise the risk for other diseases. While those studies are not conclusive, any risk looms large when there is no demonstrable benefit."

I know your hair and nails require vitamin D to maintain health, but I wasn't aware there was a huge connection between D and hair health. However, I stopped taking D a few weeks ago, and coincidently I have been losing a ton of hair everyday for the past few weeks...I wonder if there's a connection there. (I know stress is part of my problem).
