I think CG made my hair fall out

Last spring, I had long curly hair almost down to the middle of my back. It was thick and lustrous. I used Ouidad products back then, but found my hair was getting dry, so I switched over to the CG method. At first, everything was fine-my hair looked and felt better.

Then something went horribly wrong. I would co wash my hair, and big clumps of hair would fall out. It didn't matter which brand of conditioner I used or CG-friendly shampoo. The hair still fell out. By the middle of August, my part was twice as wide as it was in the spring and it extended all the way to the back of my neck. My hairline in front was receding. Some days I was losing 400 hairs . . . others 600.

So I went to my doctor and had every kind of test and blood work done to discover why my hair was falling out. All the tests came back normal. The doctor suggested using Rogaine and getting a hair cut so as to make my hair look thicker.

So I bought the Rogaine and got a Emma Watson/Mia Farrow//Halle Berry haircut. And I gave up the CG method. I went back to Redken shampoo and conditioner and sold all my CG shampoo, conditioner, and styling products. It took a couple of weeks, but slowly my hair stopped falling out. Right now, I'm at 75 hairs a day on bad days. I consider myself fortunate to lose that amount.

I'm not saying the CG method does not work. It just didn't work for me. And if you're experiencing extreme hair loss, you might want to try a different non-CG product regimen. I wish you all the best of luck.
Armpit length (dry), middle of back wet, 2c/3a, fine, porous, color-over-gray, normal elasticity. Trying so hard to grow it out.
CG since June 2011 and loving it so far.
Product Junkie-love anything CJ. Used to love KT and KCCC, but lately doing nothing for my hair but flattening it.
Am experimenting with products to see what works for me. Seems like I get different results every day even if I use the same products!

Did you do a fasting blood test? I took blood test nearly every week for 3 months and they all came back normal till I went to a doc that had me do a fasting blood test and it showed hypothyroidism and insulin resistance!!! I have mild cases of them but enough to make my hair fall out and all that.

There seem to be many posts about this topic. My hair fell out like crazy while doing cg, no matter which cg products/brands I was using. I never had that kind of shedding before cg and haven't since I've stopped cg. So there is no doubt that cg was the reason. I have no idea why, but it definitely was the cause.

hey there :) CG stands for the Curly Girl Method, theres a book titled this. Its a type of hair regime. Someone who is "CG" does not use products with silicones, petroleum, sulfate shampoos, heat styling.. theres a list of do's and don'ts, I havent touched on all of them. It's a whole hair lifestyle, and it doesnt work for everyone. Ive found that I still need a "low poo" to clarify or else my scalp gets sensitive and itchy!

But thank you for sharing Kellysmum, posts like these remind me to listen to my body and remember CG is not meant for all of us :) Im glad your hair is coming back!

I also had incredible hair loss while employing CG method and a lot of the other methods mentioned on this board. It took my scalp well over 9 months to recover POST resuming my old routine. The itchiness, scaling, shedding and endless pursuit of bouncy curls made me give up. In the end, I think the lack of shampooing and the amount of product as well as varying products, is what made my scalp so inflamed resulting in excessive shedding.

I went back to washing everyday with regular shampoo, and only using mousse to style when I used the blow dryer.

My scalp finally went back to normal and hair became fuller but not as full as it once was :disgust:

I'm going back to whatever I can do to enhance my natural wave without going back to the dark CG place :thumbright: It works great for many folks, unfortunately, I'm not one of them.

I had the same issue, but it came and went. What my doctor said is major changes in diet, exercise, sickness, or even product usage can stress the body which results in hair loss. The more you continue it should get better as your body gets more used to it. You don't say if you did or not, but perhaps you should have slowly worked your way into CG versus going cold turkey to prevent the surprise to your body.
And just as a side note, it is normal for the body to lose 100-150 hairs a day. Those hairs are replaced by other new hairs. So, your 75 hairs a day loss is typical, and actually better than the typical head of hair. You are more than fortunate.
