products just "sit" on my hair

i'm posting this in a couple of threads in hopes of getting some help....

my hair is pinspring curls so i guess 4a but i do have some sort of "straight" pieces all around too so i guess that is the 4b part of my hair. my hair is probably 1.5 inches when stretched but it basically is a nappy little fro. it's super thick/dense. i've been doing the cowash since the end of nov 06 when i first really paid attention because i knew i'd be cutting my locs and i didn't want dry loose hair like i remembered having before....

so here i am now...below is a listing of the things i've been using on my hair. it seems like no matter what i finish with the product just sits on my hair an takes forever to soak in. i feel like if i rub it in more than i already am it's bad on my hair and will cause friz and a really disheveled look. i'm applying the leave-ins or styling products while my hair is wet and sort of warm but it just sits there. i try to use a diffuser but that doesn't really do much. usually i have the product on my hair (which is dark) and the product really stands out and looks white-ish on my hair....sometimes it dries in and sometimes i have little white stuff all day (i try to avoid that especially after someone asked if i have gray hair when it was a glob of product that never dried well on the side  )

    Hi, Luvmylocs

I was having the same problem. I realized that I had buildup on my hair, possibly from using products that contained proteins.

I used a castille soap (Dr Bronner's) then did a (strong) white vinegar rinse. This left my hair soft and shiny, but tangly. I then followed that up with a deep conditioning mask ([buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/MYHoneyChild-HoneyHair-Mask-p-349.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=myhoneychild-honey-hair-mask]Myhoneychild honey hair mask[/buylink]). My hair is now back to normal.

I also realized that I was using way too much product on my hair. It would sit on my hair for hours (wet) and leave residue after it dried. My hair would also be stuck to my head and felt gross the next morning. Finally, I changed my routine from rinsing or co-washing every day to doing so every two days. On the off day, I just spritz lightly with water to re-activate the product and fingerstyle. My second-day hair is more of an afro (poor curl definition).

My routine is still a work in progress, but I'm finally starting to learn a few things. My hair is thick, but the individual strands are fine, so I have to use heavy creams (CJ honey butta leavein) sparingly. My hair absorbs gels and custards pretty well.

Hope this helps. Good luck, and keep us posted!

    luvmylocs -

    I just thought of this:

You might also want to try just using one product as a "leave-in". That is, either a styling gel/cream or a leave-in conditioner, not both.

i think you're right....even two products is probably too much....that said i think i'm going to do a two strand twist this weekend....so i won't be manipulating much with those in...

I agree that you should keep your routine simple and use possibly one product you can co-wash with/leave in. I had this happen to me too. I found my hair with a filmy buildup when I used the VO5 CO-washes. This changed when I used Trader Joes Nourish, Avalon Organics conditioner or something else. but Im definitely a minority on the boards

Even CG products can build up. Try using a gentle shampoo, like the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curlicious-Curls-Cleansing-Cream-p-886.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curlicious-Curls-Cleansing-Cream]Curlicious Curls Cleansing Cream[/buylink]. I co-wash every 3 days or so but after every 2 to 3 co-washes I usually do a shampoo a non-sulfate (currently Mastey Traite which is quite gentle) coupled with a deep treatment or a pre-poo treatment. My hair thanks me for it.
I know when it's time to shampoo when conditioning product does not absorbe in my hair and when dry my hair looks dull and begins to feel hard.

Also try co-washing frequently if you don't want to shampoo, and cut out the heavier products. In fact for a week, just try one rotation of the same products: one cowash conditioner, one rinseout, one leave-in, one light styler like [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Milkshake[/buylink]. Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.
Hear that crash? It's me falling off the CG wagon.
