Perms to make hair curlier?

Okay, so I've been debating on whether or not I should get a perm to make my hair slightly curlier because I'm kind of getting sick of my limp waves and lack of volume. I know we're supposed to embrace our *natural* curls and be happy with what we have... and I am, I just want to try something different. I have 2c/3a hair and I wanted to get to maybe 3b or even 3c.

Has anyone ever tried this? What are your experiences with perms? What are the risks? Nothing is for certain yet, I'm probably not even going to do it, I just want to hear some opinions and ideas before considering it.

2c/3a, low porosity, very fine and barely holds a style!
Low-poo: Kinky Curly Moisturizing Shampoo
Co-wash: Suave Naturals
Leave-in: Nature's Gate
Gel: KCCC

Your hair looks really pretty in your avatar pic. :)
Instead of getting a perm to make it curlier, have you considered getting a different cut that would bring out the curl more? **Be sure to find a good, experienced curly hairstylist though** Experimenting with different products or styling techniques could make a curlier difference, too.
(Sorry, but I can't imagine advising you to get a perm, but hey...That's just me, right?) :)

Thank you!! My avatar picture was a miracle though, my hair almost NEVER looks like that! I got lucky that one day :P

I've tried a lot of different techniques but lately it's just been blah and flat... I want crazy curly hair! I guess I can wait it out and see if I can get a different kind of cut, but my hair gets straighter as it gets shorter so that probably won't work :/

I agree on the cut. I would try that first, and see how it works! Also, have you clarified lately? Have you tried some new products? Tried avoiding certain cones? There are a lot of options before chemically processing. Of course I don't know what all you've tried already.

Having said that, I used to get a partial perm once or twice a year, just to the canopy (crown and front) because it wasns't even with the rest of the curl. I've come to find out that those curls/waves aren't as weak as I thought - they were just being "trained out" because I was pulling my hair back and straightening so often. Once I took it easy on those two things (and now that I'm mod-cg), my curls have really popped back! I still have a little way to go, but it's much improved.

But the perms I used to get were on the shorter layers, so my hair didn't get too damaged. If you do decide to go that way, I would recommend keeping it not much longer than shoulder length and getting regular trims!

    Good luck!

I have 2/b/2c but have wanted to try to get 3 or 4 myself. However, I could never get a perm to do it. I'd be leery of chemical damage. Instead (and this is what I'm leaning toward) is getting a perm rod set. You do everything you would do when getting a perm but instead of the awful smelling chemicals, you use setting lotion and let it dry before removing the rods. After removing them you separate the curls. I'm likely going to have my hair done that way this summer. The nice thing about this is that if you don't like it you can wash it out.
