Dry,split ends Help......

Hello Naturals,
My name is Nicole and I've been natural since 2007 and I wore my loose hair until 2009 and got sisterlocks for a year and did my 2nd big chop in 2010. Now I'm back to loose hair again. Every since going natural my hair have been very dry and I keep getting split ends/ breakage. I've constanlty clipped my ends and I'm not able to maintain my length because of this. When I look at my hair strands I can see either split ends or holes in the hair strands. Now I will probably have to go to a salon and get about 3 inches cut off and I'm not happy about that. I don't know what to do or what I'm doing wrong. I've tried different products but nothing seems to keep my hair moisturized. I've deep condition once a week and try to seal my ends everynight.

If anyone has any tips please let me know. I'm getting so frustrated with my hair.

i find the best thing for slip ends is a nice light oil. i LOVE argan oil, but it is rather pricey and somtimes hard to get, so joboja oil is another good one, i just seal my ends with it after my shower before i go to bed, then in the morning i do it again n during the day if it needs it. my hair seems to love it. hope that helps :)

my hair: 3b, high porosity, high density and coarse hair (i think i finally figured that all out)
my hair loves conditioner only styling!
Oils and my own procuts are my hairs best friend
my hair goal length is bra strap length when curly.

Are you using a LI before you seal? Because that oil could be locking out moisture or locking in the little bit of moisture your strands already have . . and then when there's no more there's dryness, breakage, splits, etc.

In reading your post, I had a couple of thoughts -- Is it possible you have some product buildup which is interfering with what you're doing to try and moisturize? If you think that might be it, perhaps you could do a cowash of condish with some baking soda in it followed by an ACV rinse and then a DT. <-- Coconut oil would be good because it really does absorb into the hair instead of just sitting on top of the hair. Adding the oil when the hair is wet (=has moisture) would help keep that moisture in.

The second thought is -- Could it be the water in your area? Maybe there are minerals in it that are just too harsh for your hair. If I find a thread I was reading a week or so ago on the problems with hair that hard water can cause, I'll post it in this thread for you. As I remember, there were some suggestions on what to do to overcome it.

Hope the various suggestions you're getting help.

ETA -- Here's the link to the thread that got into a discussion of minerals in water and the problems it can cause with hair breakage. This is a current discussion, so you may have already been following it. Good luck with hitting on whatever's going to work for you!

I wash my hair every week depending on how I wear it. Most of the time my hair is in 2strand twists and my twist only hold up for a week. I do a ACV rinse to ger rid of any product build up as well. I do a deep cond once a week. as well and I put a leave in. I don't think it's the water because I have recently moved from Wisconsin to Maryland and still have the same issues. I'm just trying to troubleshoot to figure out my hair.

:hello2: I use a great hair product to prevent split ends and any damage, it's Pro Naturals Moroccan Oil Hair Treatment with Heat Protector and it works amazingly, my hair is so much healthier, soft, shiny and resilient. I recommend it because in no time you will see the results. :headbang: :blob8:

Thanks I will have to try it. Do they sell it at the local BS?

Hey you should try olive oil. I had a breakage problem but it stopped when I begun using olive oil. I leave it in my hair before washing it for 1-2 hours. My hair has grown a lot since using it. I also avoided straightening. I haven't straightened my hair in two years.

If you can see holes in your hair, you need protein. There are recipes for protein treatments in the recipes section, and probably in the protein section also. I add Neutral Protein Filler from Sally's to my conditioner or DT, but I use protein for my superfine hair, not to repair damage.
