Shea Moisture...which ones?!?!

Hey curlies! Just looking for an overall opinion here. I'm hearing that Shea Moisture is on sale at Walgreens this week, and I've been DIEING to try them for a long while. Now that they're finally on sale, I'm thinking this is finally my chance! :) Besides, I need some heavy duty products (moisture-wise) for winter, and I desperately need a curl cream. ;) So, I think it's buy one get one -- I'd get two products. I am definitely gonna get either the smoothie or milk as one (maybe both) of my choices, but my main question is, which is/do you like better -- the smoothie or the milk -- and why? I am looking for something to use as a curl cream and base layer with some moisture and curl-enhancing properties. I think the shampoo is out because it has fragrance in it (I'm fragrance-sensitive :(), and I don't REALLY need a conditioner, although the DT mask looks nice. What did you guys think of that? What other products should I be looking for? BTW, I have coarse hair, low porosity, and low elasticity, just in case you didn't look at my siggie. ;) Thanks so much! I'm so excited! :D

SMOOTHIE. I think it would be perfect for what you're wanting. It is so moisturizing. :D

And for what it's worth, I love the shampoo. It doesn't make me itch and the fragrance is actually pretty light.

+1 the smoothie would be a good bet for you. It's thicker and creamier than the milk, which has more slip and is more a LI than a curl cream, to me.

Thank you guys!!! I am SOOO getting the smoothie now! From what you're saying, the smoothie is more a moisturizing cream, as opposed to the milk, which is more a LI? This is awesome! I am all too excited!! :D I would love to get the shampoo, but my scalp itches with any and all fragrance. :(

Woo hoo! I hope you like it. I think you will. Maybe if you're doing a BOGO you could get the milk too :)

True! I like to mix them together sometimes. It works well to add slip to the smoothie and use it as a RO.
I wasn't aware that the shampoo had any added fragrance? I thought the smell just came from the natural ingredients. But whatever the smell is from, it smells fantastic.

I know, I am SOOO glad it's buy one get one! :) I don't know if I want the DT mask though. But I don't hear many great reviews on the mask, so I probably WILL get the milk, too! :) Are there any other products I'm missing? There's only the milk, smoothie, and mask (besides the poo and condish ;)), right?
Yeah, I think there's artificial fragrance at the very end. :( But, maybe the ingredient list was wrong. I don't know exactly what EOs I'm sensitive to (if any), either. I've heard so many great things about the shampoo, though, that I really want to get it! :)

I just bought the mask and the smoothie last week before the sale. :( I wasn't crazy about the smell of the mask but it does a decent job. Don't think I'll buy it again though. The smoothie smells like pina colada. Yum! I used it as a leave in and layered LALSG over it. First time I used it I honestly had my best curly hair day yet. Haven't been able to replicate since though. I still recommend the smoothie.

Since it is just buy one get one HALF off, I think I am waiting until it is "get one free." ;) Thank you for pointing that out, Kasden! How do you use the smoothie in your routine? CCE -- I LOVE the smell of piña coladas, so that sounds really good!! :D I am glad you are liking the smoothie, too! Thank you for your reviews!

I rotate the smoothie out with FSG and mousse. I emulsify LI with a few drops of jojoba oil, scrunchscrunchscrunch, then scrunch in either FSG, mousse or smoothie. My hair does better if I let it soak in for 15-20 minutes (I'm low - med porosity) then apply gel. I tried the smoothie as a LI...it weighed me down and left me with stringy curls. But it might work for you as a LI since you have coarser hair like CCE.

Oh, so you use it as an all-in-one product! Cool! I think I will need another product over it to give me nice hold, but I *think* that I'm going to use it as a curl cream in winter. I LOOVE my product layering when the weather gets cold. ;) Using it as a LI sounds promising, too! I'm low porosity, too, BTW. Do you have fine hair?

Yes - I have fine hair. I need some hold, too - I always use a gel over the smoothie.

Ha! Too funny that you mentioned this. :) I looked the ingredients lists up the other night, and there was no fragrance in either shampoo! Turns out that the only thing that worried me is the "exotic" flowery extracts, because I think I'm sensitive to some of those. I wish there was a trial bottle of these shampoos! ;) I may just have to bite the bullet and try some. I have family members who like taking all the stuff that doesn't work for me, anyway, so it wouldn't be a total waste if it didn't work. :D

Im SO happy I read this thread earlier! I just got back from Walgreens with the smoothie and the holding mist. I LOOOVE both. OMG. Like, seriously. Love.! Smells AMAZING. And, I used the smoothie to scrunch out the nasty crunch that Fructise Pure Clean Gel left in my hair. Used the mist to finish. My hair looks soft and shiney and not cruncy or wet AND I smell amazing. Im doing the happy dance!!!:hello1:

Hi Wavy! I was finally able to get the same great results I got the first time I used the smoothie. For me, I need to keep it simple--smoothie as leave in followed by hard hold gel (LALSG), that's it. I'd been layering too much stuff and was getting build up and frizz. Today I just used those 2 products and wow! No frizz, nice clumps, good shine, and great curls. Smoothie is definitely a great buy. Leaves my hair soft and shiny not weighed down. Am curious about the spray for refreshing... You like how I keep it simple! Haha 

OMG! I just wrote a really big reply and canceled it by mistake!! Stupid fancy technology. :( I hate it sometimes!

Anyway, I'm gonna make this short and sweet. :) I got tired of typing after I wrote out that other reply, LOL! I am very happy that both of you are loving Shea Moisture! All this product love is contagious. :) I was thinking about getting the holding mist, too, Sunshine! You are making me want it now that you love it so much! :D And I'm glad you got your routine to work again, CCE! I LOVE tons of layers in the winter, but it does funny things to my hair in the summer. :p So, I went out to Walgreens the other day and picked up the Moisture Retention shampoo and the Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I didn't use the shampoo yet, but a family member with a sensitive scalp like mine tried it and said they loved it. Supposedly, it was nice and tingly and cleansing on their scalp, but it felt moisturizing and creamy and rich, too. Not sure how I'm gonna react to it. My scalp is WAY sensitive. I don't know if the Japanese honeysuckle extract (or whatever the heck that extract is) is one I'm sensitive to, or if it will be too stripping, which also makes me itchy. I will report back on Tuesday when I do try it out. But, I just want to stop here for a minute to say that I did try the smoothie, and it was FANTASTIC. Like, seriously. It doesn't get much better than this!! I did my normal routine -- wash, condition, icequeen in the shower, scrunch out RO and scrunch in LI, scrunch in gel (it was FSG this time, which was definitely different than the LA Looks NutraCurl I've been using lately), and plop for about and hour and a half. I then pixie diffused for 10-ish minutes, mixed some LOOB and the SM smoothie in my hand, scrunched some of that in, and pixie diffused some more. I thought it was looking pretty good, and a family member told me my hair looked really curly. Okay, that was good! My hair was SO SOFT, though, that it was almost unbelievable. I have INSANELY dry hair that literally drinks up moisture like it's nobody's business. It's insane. But, my hair felt great -- so soft, as a matter if fact, that the curl fell out a little, and it was looking a little flat by the end of the day. So, I pineappled and went to bed. I woke up, scrunched some water into my hair, scrunched it some Aussie Aussome Volume Mousse and some of the Smoothie, and I pixie diffused until it was dry. And my hair is still soft. And I didn't even put any extra conditioner in. Usually my hair is a wreck if I don't do that on the 2nd day. It's a little frizzy, but I was sweating a lot today, and I diffused a bit too long. This stuff is AWESOME. And it's going to make an awesome curl cream in winter! Goodness, I love it. SO glad I bought it. I hope the shampoo is just as awesome!!

Edit: LOL, I just re-read that, and it was TOTALLY not short! Ha ha! Once I got going, I couldn't stop!! Thanks to all the advice and encouragement I got from everyone!! And thanks for the smoothie rec, MC and Swtndspcy!! You guys all rock. ;)

Thanks, CCE! I am having WAY too much fun experimenting with it! I am glad it works so well. All these natural products are amazing at moisturizing my hair. I am too much of a drugstore product gal! :) It's amazing how dry my hair still is after all this time CG. Too bad all these natural products are so expensive. I will just have to concoct my own, ha ha! :D

Wavyone -- I just used the SM Moisture Retention shampoo today. And, OMG, it was amazing!!! :D I am totally sold. If it doesn't make me itchy, this is totally going to be HG status for me. I don't yet know if or which extracts make me itchy, so fingers crossed that my scalp reacts well. I didn't even use any oil on my scalp or hair before I washed it today. And it feels great. That is a HUGE deal for me!!! :D My scalp and hair are normally so dry, and if I don't do any type of scalp-oiling or pre-washes, it feels terrible and dry and refuses to curl correctly. I got great curls today, and I didn't do any of that. It gave a fairly nice lather, and it cleaned very nicely. It seems to have passed the "flake test," since I don't appear to have too many/extra flakes. :) That always makes me happy. When I massaged it in and rinsed it out, my hair felt BEYOND soft, and no shampoo or low poo has ever done this to me. Not even CO-washing has done this to me in a good way. I almost felt like I had just put conditioner in my hair. WOW!! I don't know if it was from putting the Smoothie in my hair or what. But I love this shampoo!! Only downfall is that LOVE it so much, so I'll probably go through it quickly. I need a bigger bottle, ha ha! :D
Oh, and I also tried the Smoothie again as a styler yesterday, and I'm completely sold on that as well. I love my hair now! I will have to upload pics of the difference between the first use of the Smoothie and the second use of the Smoothie, when I added the shampoo. I did my styling routine a little different yesterday. The first time I used the Smoothie, I mixed it in my hand with some LOOB and scrunched upside down, added more and scrunched this way and that way, and flipped upside down again and scrunched more. This time, instead of mixing the Smoothie and the LOOB together every time, I just scrunched in some extra LOOB last time I scrunched. I got lots more hold, so my curls didn't fall, and they remained bouncy the whole day, whereas last time, they were dragging somewhat by the end of the day. My hair WAS a little softer last time, but that's ok. :)

I've been thinking it would work well to SOTC! :) I might have to try it that way one time instead of mixing it with my LOOB! It is SO moisturizing that I bet it would work well for a DT or rinse-out. It's so AWESOME. I can't believe that it made my hair that soft and moisturized. I have INSANELY dry hair. Not even tons of oils and conditioner make it soft, but this did. Weird, but I'm cool with it! :D

I use the smoothie as leave in and layer hard hold gel over and the smoothie leaves hair a lot less crunchy with lots of shine and clumps. Don't have to scrunch as much or add oil. I've been smoothing a little on canopy and ends on second day hair with LOOB and getting good results. I'm soooo loving the smoothie!

Awesome!!! I'm so trying it as a curl cream or LI when the weather gets cooler! (Maybe even just as a LI now. ;)) I love using tons of layers in the winter. :) My hair likes it for some reason.

Omg, I love it for 2nd day hair, too! My hair is constantly dry and never gets it's fill of moisture. :) The Smoothie is SO helping with that! Your 2nd day routine sounds similar to what I do on the first day -- mixing the Smoothie and the LOOB together and scrunching it in (but Smasters style!).

DEFINITELY tell me how you like the low poo if you get it! It's ridiculously awesome stuff. Super moisturizing, too!

WNW, do you use a gel over the smoothie and LOOB? Also, do the shampoo and smoothie have protein?

I use gel "under" my smoothie and LOOB. I plop with just my LI and gel in, then I pixie diffuse for a while. I mix some Smoothie and LOOB together in my hand, and scrunch that in, and then I finish pixie diffusing.

The Smoothie has Silk Protein, but it hasn't seemed to bother me much. I LOVE the Smoothie, so I hope the protein doesn't start bothering me. My hair is a lot frizzier lately, (even though it's soft) though, so I'm wondering if it's the protein...I hope not! That would be disappointing. :( I don't think the shampoo has protein, but I could be wrong.
Type 2c/3a with lots of hair and a super sensitive scalp! Med/slightly coarse texture, low porosity and elasticity.
