Advice for damaged long hair?

shizzlebeansshizzlebeans Posts: 68Registered Users
I am surprised to find that my hair is insufferably dry about a week in to CG. As a wavy, I was anticipating a greasy adjustment phase, but my scalp seems content with the new treatment. I am using Suave Naturals Coconut as a daily cowash. I am wondering if I need something with more moisturizing components or if I just need to give it a few more weeks and see if I adjust. The roots and short layers are slowly softening up but the last 10 inches of my hair is failing to respond so far. My short layers bounce up like ringlets (2c-ish) and the long ones are limp fuzzy s-waves (2b?). It is awkward and I end up putting it all into a huge clip most of the time.

The longest layers are half-way down my back and have been with me for years of straightening, so I am wondering if I need to cut them (I am not opposed to this; my hair grows fast), or if some kind of deep moisturizing conditioner would help them come back to life. My options are wait it out, try new product, or cut off long layers... any recommendations on what might work best?

Thanks!

Do you know if your hair is fine or coarse? Porous or non porous? Fine and/or porous hair need protein. This will help your hair bounce up (if you need protein).

Most people need something more moisturizing then suave. Especially on the longer parts of the hair. They are older and often more damaged and dryer. Another thing I think is worth trying is coconut oil. If it doesn't work for your hair, you can try it on your skin. For some people coconut oil just makes their hair oily. For others it is amazing.
I add coconut oil to my hair. Enough to make it look like I've had the flu for a week and haven't been able to wash my hair. Leave it in 20 minutes to overnight. Start with less time, but the overnight works better for me. Then I cowash it out. It cowashes right out for me, but some find it harder to remove.
Don't cut your hair until you try a few things and see how it goes.
    Good luck.

    Hi, thanks for your help.

I looked through some of the links to try to figure out porosity and texture, and I think my porosity is average in my healthy hair and possibly more porous in the longer sections. Texture is on the coarse side of average. Soft hair is a very difficult thing for me to achieve.

I will give coconut oil a try soon; thanks for the suggestion.

Coarse hair and protein are usually not good friends. Coarse hair does tend to like oils and butters and the products that contain them. They soften the hair and help it to bend. Two off the top of my head are Garnier Fructice Triple Nutrition and Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle and Rose (strong scent). If these were too strong as rinse out conditioners, you could use them as deep treatments.

Wow, coconut oil, where have you been all my life.

So it worked really well. Thanks for the suggestion. I went pretty light and just did the ends of my hair since my scalp is pretty good and I didn't want to mess that up. I attached a picture of my results today. I wish I had a before picture to compare the current one to. :D

I didn't know Garnier made any CG-friendly products--I may check that one out.

I'm glad coconut oil worked for you. I feel the same way about it, love it. Your hair looks great in the pictures. :thumbright:
GFTN is actually pretty popular. There are huge threads on it. Hopefully that will work for you too.
