I'm starting to loose hope with the cg. My hair is still like straw and frizzy. Nothing seems to help ! Is there anything else I can try? Ugh :(

maybe you need a protein treatment followed by a deep conditioning treatment if that doesnt work it could be one of your products thats causing this
    Lo-poo:organix Shea butter shampoo
    Co-wash: suave coconut
    Rinse out:GFTN/GVP conditioning balm
Leave in: GF daily care spray leave in
    Serum-like product: still need one
    Gel:LA looks sport gel/ HESMU,GFPC
    Oils: olive, coconut

    I think I'm normal-overly porous, medium-thick hair(although I see fine hair too), love protein

What kind of protein treatment? I'm using tressemme naturals as a co wash and condition and la looks sports gel.

Depending on the humidity, it could be an issue with humectants... I notice a big difference if I avoid humectant-rich products when it is super humid.

Well, it may not be the case for you, but the LA Sports gel has too much protein for me and my hair felt like straw with frizz every time I used it.
  • KorkscrewKorkscrew Posts: 1,834Registered Users
I agree that the gel could be your culprit. I recall trying to use LA Looks gel years ago and it frazzled my hair to Hell. I've had the same problem with pretty much all gels.

You might want to ditch the gel and either use more conditioner, or use mousse instead. Suave mousse has worked well for me on occasion, but like most gels and mousse products, I can only use it so long before my hair reacts poorly.

You sound a lot like me...I thought I needed moisture but then I realized I hadnt done my honey/olive oil DT/lightening & ACV rinse since I moved back to college.. last month. Did it today and my hair is back to normal. I stay away from the LA Looks as much as I can, it dries me out also. Ive switched to Flax Seed Gel. If I feel I need extra hold (like the wedding in the country I went to last week) I'll water down LA Looks in spray bottle and apply it that way so its not as heavily applied.

    GL, dont give up! :hello1:

This is just too confusing! How do I know which product has too much protein or if my hair even reacts poorly to protein?! Ugh
My hair is normally very dry and coarse and thick so i usually need to use a lot of strong gel to give shape To each curl along with leaving in my conditioner. Conditioner or spray gel just leave my hair frizzy.

I'm just a newbie and still trying to figure out my curly hair. My fav leave in products so far are Curl Keeper and KCKT. They are quite wonderful compared to everything else I've tried. Curl Keeper is great for frizz.
Also, this video has helped with my frizz a LOT! By twisting my top layer with my fingers like she does with gel. I haven't tried diffusing yet though, and I haven't used any of the products she does. Just her styling technique...

I also needed a bucket of gel to hold my hair in shape. But I hated the crunchy-ness. And after a while the gel didnt work so well... I started to frizz. The day I realized my hair was protein sensitive was when I read a thread saying someones hair still felt "dry" even when it was wet in the shower. I started having the same problem. And they said it looked like a "spider web" in the shower (you pick up one curl and a bunch of hairs are stretching to another section, creating a spider web-like appearance. Instead of being smooth and squishy like you want to feel). Posters in that forum told her shes probably protein sensitive. Does your hair act that way?

Hair is essentially protein. Ive noticed many curlies who categorize themselves with having "fine" or "thin" hair enjoy protein treatments. You add protein to thin hair as a supplement. Thats how I think of it anyway. Some curlies like us with thick, coarse hair don't need any extra protein, it turns into too much of a good thing :)

Maybe youre like me and other 3s who have learned to avoid it. The only way you can know is by trying things out. I made Flax seed Gel and used it for 2 weeks (often times no conditioner under it) with no strawlike frizz. I tried LA Looks again and it was back to being dry. I used daily conditioners with a protein and I frizzed. Went back to protein-free conditioners and I was fine. I use honey and olive oil as a DT and for lightening treatments, and my hair enjoys a splash of ACV to reduce frizz as well. These are things that work for me but every head of hair is different, if your hair is dry its telling you something isnt agreeing

Suave Naturals has a large selection of protein free conditioners (make sure Naturals in on the bottle, not the Professionals line) and theyre like... $.130 at my walmart. So you can experiment with those conditioners if you play with protein free stylers as well.

I hope this helps you determine what your hair likes! or doesn't like! :thumright:

Try the tightly twisted method with lots of conditioner.. Google it.. It's supposed to help tightly curled hair.. I tried this method but it didn't do good to my curls but left my hair soft n smooth.. So now I apply a bit of my conditioner as leave in(the method asks u to load ur hair with it) and I don't need any gel or anything

    Shampoo: TBS Rainforest moisture
    Conditioner:TBS Rainforest moisture
DT: TBS Rainforest moisture hair butter
Styling: TBS rainforest moisture conditioner as leave in & rarely Brazil nut define &no frizz

I'm in the same boat as chloevalentine. I am literally out of options of what else I could possibly do to make my hair not feel like hay and a fire hazard. I have extremely dense and extremely low porosity hair. Stormy gave a great description of how my hair feels- still dry in the shower and weblike. I have tried every salon treatment as well, including the big $$ ones like brazilian keratin (according to posts from this site, supposedly the treatment helps de-frizz and soften, but not straighten curls... the opposite happened for me). I switched to sulfate free, which I noticed a slight improvement, but going from extra dry to really dry isn't much help. I use a deep, overnight treatment weekly (I have bought plenty of brands recommended on this site), I've done the mayo treatment, and I only wash my hair at most 3 times a week, though it only gets drier, not more natural oils on days 2 and 3. I can't use shampoos that don't lather because it would take more than half the bottle just to wash my hair once. I've tried using cleansers to clean out my hair of build up. (Stormy- what is ACV and where do I find flax seed gels and honey/olive oil treaments?)
I never blow dry my hair, and in fact can't even wear it down since I've never been able to find anyone who can give it a decent cut (I've been to too many stylists to count, and my hair is always an attraction in the salon because of how thick it is), nor can I find products that give me nice, soft curls. I can't even put it in a ponytail- my only options are braids, buns, and twistups with clips.
I am so at a loss, both in ideas of what else to do and in more money to spend on products and treatments that don't work.

Sulfate, alchol, and protein can all cause my hair to be brittle. My hair loves 100% pure almond oil. Light easy under gel and leave in conditioners. The gel I use for hold is Ecostyler with Argon oil. Almond oil every time I condition and every other night before bed.
