Baby boy names .... arrrrgggh

SpiderSpider Posts: 3,381Registered Users Curl Neophyte
Help me!! Why are they so hard to pick? DH and and I are not on the same page.
My criteria: (My apologies in advance to anyone that may take offense to the below!!!)

Not too trendy/popular
Not a big fan of last names as first
No deep Biblical or old man names (Chester, Abraham, Walter, Izekiel...)
No names that sound like a dog's name
Looking for classic, pronounceable names that are appropriate for a baby/toddler or a 50 year old man (which he will be some day).

Origins- I'm okay with mainstream ethnic names (our backgrounds are me-Scandinavian, DH- German/Scots/English/Native American)

Our last name ends in "man" so some name combos sound mumbly if they end in that an/en sound.

So... once we get past all that  , there's the good old association hurdle (I dated a guy with that name or a classy bully had the name in 5th grade...)

Our 4 year old son's name is Drew.
These are some of the names I like: Sean, Aaron, Alexander (Sander/Zander/Alec), Jamie, Kristjan (my gfather), Sam, Lucas, Ryan.

He likes Thor, Cole/Colt/Colton, Pierce, Coy to name a few.

One name he really likes and I'm sorta okay with is Ryker, the Dutch form of Richard.

Did anyone else have this issue??? Any suggestions?:dontknow:

Girls are easier IMO. You can get away with more creative, unique names. I easily have 3-4 girls names had it gone that way.

I don't have any suggestions, but we are in the same boat. We can't agree at all. Our baby boy is might just end up being named Peanut if we can't come to an agreement. :)

My son's name is Lucas so I'm a little biased but it really is a great name for a boy. He can choose to be called Luke or Lucas. Most family and friends call him Luke but at school he's known as Lucas. It's a versatile name that works as they get older without too much of a transition.

We do get a lot of "Luke...I am your father" jokes though so if you were going to use the nickname Luke you might want to consider that.

I like Ryan and Pierce too but Ryker is really cool.

Chris and I disagreed on Luke's name forever. Lucas was LITERALLY the only name we both liked. He wanted to name him Spike, seriously. We were still debating his middle name in the car on the way to his deployment. Right as we got to the base gate we decided.

    Ryker makes me think:

    320x240.jpg

I like Alexander (that was our 2nd choice for our first DS Connor's name), Ryan, Sean, and Sam.

When our younger DS Oliver was born, we knew we wanted Franklin for the middle name, so I wanted something with 1 or 3 syllables. Our last name also has 2 syllables, and I thought it would sound clunky otherwise.

Two of my sons have the last name thing going on (LOL): Bennett and Preston

Then my other son has a Scandinavian name: Soren

My grandpa was from Denmark so some of his kids got names that reflect that: Thorvald, Marius, Hans, Ole

    Other names I like are:
    Neil
    Ian
    Everett
    Nathan
    James
    Heath/Heathcliff
    Felix

I don't have any advice, but I do think girls names are easier. I am still not happy with my son's name. Not a bad name, just not thrilled with it. I thought it would grow on me, but I was wrong.
    Good luck!!

I think Soren is one of the best names I've ever heard...wish I had heard of it while I was still birthin' boys.

Alexander is played out. All forms. There are a kajillion kids named Alex/Zander/etc. It's like John used to be. Sam and Ryan are close behind...except that they're mostly girl names now.

Ryker sounds like you're a diehard Trekkie. Sorry.

I say figure out a name that YOU love, and then after the baby is born, just name him that. A husband with half a brain will give in to a wife who just went through childbirth.

Bryan is a Jr. and he wants this baby to be a III. I think he is finally realizing that I am not going for that. I like his name just fine...for him. I don't do family names. Our last name is "son" name, so names like Mason won't work. Girls are SO much easier.

I like Soren, but there is one in the family (baby).

I never though of Star Trek with Ryker. Never watched next generation, and if that's the worst association (as opposed to a notorious criminal for instance) it's minor :)

How about Ryker Alexander + Your last Name-man?

    Or Sean Ryker?

If you add a middle name, you can both get what you want. :thumbright:

Since you like Aaron maybe the two of you would like a spin off of that name: Arion.

I've got a played out Alexander and a Sebastian. I had similar naming rules to yours. Alexander isn't popular here and is family name. Sebastian isn't popular here or on the national level. One of the problems with boy names is that once you get out of the top 50, names get rather odd.

    Other names that we considered:
    Christopher
    Oliver
    Charles
Lucas sounds horrendous with our last name but I love it.

I really like the name Pierce a lot and I really like Ryker too. I had a child in my day care with that name about 20 years ago and thought it was a neat name back then!

I am the mother of 4 boys and found picking a name for boys much more challenging then picking girl names, by the time baby #4 was on the way I didn't bother with a girls name at all, I just knew he was a boy!

My husbands parents likes to shorten long names and lengthen short names. So I also had to keep that in mind when I was picking out their names. My boys names are Mason Richardson, Kennedy James, Lincoln Shaun, and Garrett Brian-Aaron. I was worried as to what they would call my boys because they called their other grandsons Sethie and Judo so I called them Mace, KJ, Link and Rhett before they had a chance to come up with anything on their own.

I really like Kristjan and I have always liked Ryan.

I have a Maxwell Krishna and an Aidan James. My daughter (Maya Sophia) was the easiest to name and to agree on.

    I like Cole and Colton.

I had planned on Benjamin if either of my girls had been boys.

    I also really like Dean.

DH and I couldn't agree on boy names, so it's a good thing we had a girl. We do agree on George. I love that name. :-) Some of my other favorites are:

    Michael
    James (Jay as in Gatsby)
    Oscar
    Leo
    Charles (Charlie)

I like traditional names that have meaning.

    Good luck!

I forgot about Charles. A good friend of mine is a Charles and uses it professionally but his friends all call him Charlie. I love that name

I feel your pain! We had the CUTEST girl names picked out & lo & behold- it's a boy! I like Porter <very much a last name> and our son likes Rex he likes dinosaurs so I'm sure it's after T-Rex...> We don't exactly hate it- so it's a possibility... I really like boy names that are slightly uncommon but not crazy. And I like ones that end in "er"... Good luck!

We decided on boy names really easily, we barely even discussed it, they were always going to be what they are!
They're Nicholas Matthew and Alexander Liam, so from your list obviously I'm biased.I like all your choices apart from Sean which I've always had a strange dislike for, your DH's not so much. I like classic names that won't date or don't belong to a particular generation and also like long names that can be shortened if the child wants it to be.

Colton was on my list last go round. I really like Aaron (my brother's name).

Ryker makes me think of Riker's Island. It's a cool name, but that's the association for me. When he grows up, it might give him some street cred! LOL!
