flax seed gel question

beckoliobeckolio Posts: 3Registered Users
I've been reading all the posts about flax seed gel and even made a batch myself and it was horrible! No hold what so ever for my hair.
I read about FOTE aloe gel. Now is this the gel that you find in the sun tan section to put on a sun burn? If so, how much to you usually mix in your FSG? Mine's been in the fridge for about a week now, so would I just mix the FOTE gel in with it?
I really want this FSG to work for my hair so any other tips you might have to make it have more hold would be great! I want to get away from the gel I use now because it's so flakey when dry.
Thanks so much!
Becky
PS I think I'm a 3b. No shampoo for a few years and I use ren pure the red bottle conditioner, DEP sport #11 gel.

Some people like to use a hard holding store-bought gel on top of the FSG (especially wavies like me :)). I think that would help you out a lot. You could try adding some extra natural ingredients or "goodies" into it to give it some more hold, too, if you'd really like to avoid buying stuff from the store. Honey and agave nectar (you can experiment with different amounts, but try out something like a tsp. first and go from there) are great for some extra hold. I think my favorite thickener/goodie is cornstarch. It adds tons of extra hold to my gel, and it improves the texture of the gel. I just mix one TSP of cornstarch with one TBSP of water in the bowl I'm going to strain my gel into and stir it up until it's dissolved, and then I strain and whisk like normal. You can also try soaking the seeds in the regular amount of water overnight before you make it. It will improve the hold of your gel. Or, you can try straining the gel like normal but returning the liquid back to the pot to boil longer and reduce more. I hope this gives you some new ideas! Keep experimenting -- it gets better and even more fun!
To answer your question about AVG: I believe you can get it at Walmart, but I have never gotten mine there before. I'm not sure how much people normally add in -- I'd guess something like a tablespoon, but I don't know -- but you'd add it it after you strain the flaxseeds while it's still hot (and before you put it in the bottle) like any other goodie you'd add in. HTH!

Thank you for the reply. I'll try adding the corn starch. I need more hold than what it gave me, my hair was a frizzy mess, but really soft!
