Protein and moisture balance??

ShondadiniShondadini Posts: 205Registered Users
Hi all, I've been reading post and it seems like most ppl alternate between using proteins and moisturizers during their wash and condition regiment. My questions is would it be ok for me to deep condition and protein treatment at the same time once a week?

Once a wk sounds good to me, as long as you don't do it every day or use way too much protein. I usually just DC & add some hair mayonnaise to it once a wk~

A lot of people do that to save time. From what I have read, "smaller" proteins work better than larger ones for a lot of people (hydrolyzed kind in products vs using eggs, yogurt, etc).

Though I don't use it mixed with conditioner, this one would work well for this purpose - it's strong, but liquid so it blends easily with anything: Colorful Neutral Protein Filler.

I just got my curl analysis and we're the same in texture/porosity/elasticity. I'm not a 3b, but my hair probably has the same needs as yours. I was told to avoid heavy emollients. Do you do that/have a problem with those?? Also, is your density high/med/low?? Where do you get your RO?? That's one I haven't heard of and how often do you low-poo??

Yea mamaherrera!! A hair twin! :)

To be honest, it was a decent starting point but I don't think the recommendations on my hair analysis were very helpful.

I have high density hair and very strong curl pattern. My hair isn't easily weighed down so I have no problem with heavy emollients. It's also very very dry - esp the ends which tend to dry out and split easily. So, I've been using (and looking for new) rich conditioners. On top of that, I have actually been experimenting with oils the last few weeks and did an oil rinse this morning and it feels pretty good.

That said, my roots do get somewhat flat because I have greasy scalp but I don't like big hair so I don't mind the top half of the hair being a bit weighed down.

I started by lo-pooing 1x per week but lately with the gross summer weather we're having (sticky, sweaty, humid) and the fact that I use more "sticky" products to prevent frizz - I've been washing once every 4 days or so with a co-wash in between. Winter I think I'll go back to 1x per week.

DermOrganic conditioner - I got it from amazon. It has great reviews but it smells kind of medicinal and it was a bit expensive. I don't think I will be buying it again - thinking of getting AO GPB next time.

What products have you tried that worked for you? Or that didn't?

Alrighty, lets see how close we are. I think I'm a 2c. could maybe be a 3a, if I knew what I was doing, but probably not because my top is flat. Since I've gone real CG, I've not yet found products that work for me. I thought this would be easy. I'm using AOMM, or KCCC and Loreal Clean gel, and lustrasilk olive oil chholesterol because like you said, even though the analysis said no emollients, I feel like my hair is dry. And oils help enhance, but can weigh me down if i overdo. Right now, ymy biggest thing is frizz around and in between each curl. It drives me nuts. Oh and on top too. all over frizz lets say. So what works, don't konw. I'm going to try just gel today and see if that makes any difference. I don't think I want more protein as my hair feels kind of strawy. Maybe more leave in, but it feels gross to put that much product in , cuz my density is just normal so I feel like I'm slathering my hair in stuff and I dno't like that. It gets kind of a dull look after using lots of that lustrasilk stuff. So I don't know. I want the shine and bounce adn no frizz. I notice you also don't use any curl enhancers.

hmmm. I think I can get away with the emollients because I use a lot of protein lately. Since your hair feels strawy - I would give it a shot. As long as you DT after, it won't hurt.

Also - I don't leave a lot of the emollients in. If you are using AOMM, KCCC, and lustrasilk as LI/stylers - it might just be too much for your hair. I use Giovanni Direct leave in which is fairly light and seal in the moisture with a dab or two of John Masters Organics pomade and rake in a little gel. So just 1 emollient is left in the hair.

No - I haven't tried a curl enhancer yet. I have a pretty strong curl pattern so I didn't really need it. Plus almost all the ones I've seen have humectants and since my hair acts like high porosity - humectants don't work for me in high or low dews. And the summer dew here are around 70.

As soon as the weather gets less humid I do want to try one though. Do you like KCCC?

Well I only can wish I had a strong curl pattern like you!! I'm gonig to start with just gel, adn add products back in to see what's going on I want to like KCCC, but I have a denial (feeling) that maybe all the aloe vera is whats giving me the frizzies. Not for sure yet, maybe it's my scrunching technique, who knows, but it might not work for me and I"ll have to look for something else. Or maybe I'll stay like you and just to LI and gel,

Just curious - where do you live & what kind of dew points do you have there now? I saw your post about frizzies on another board and now that you mention aloe giving you frizz - it made me think it might be that.

My hair has been behaving so much better since I got a handle on this whole dewpoint-humectant connection.

Also, 2 weeks ago I tried raking in gel instead of scrunching and got much less frizz. But for me, my hair has to be pretty wet for raking to work. Worth a try :)

Yes I appreciate you sharing your own knowledge. you know when I started getting products to try I got so excited, but had no itdea about dewpoints, I live in NM, where it's usually dry as heck, but recently it's been humid, dewpoints at 58-60. I need to try maybe raking, but yes with wet hair, because like I said in the curls towards the ends, there's just a ratnest in there, and before I tried going CG with no cones, and natural products like aloe, I didn't have quite this mess. Thanks for brainstorming with me. Hopefully we find somethign that works for me.

I know - I thought going CG would automatically lead to healthy hair. I didn't realize it would have such a big learning curve :)

Check out the high porosity boards for mroe details on dews and humectants but the general rule I remember is that you shouldn't use humectants in dews under 35 (will dry your hair out even more) or over 50-60 (it will cause frizz).

Aloe is a maybe but it doesn't work for me in high dews so I am assuming it's not a good idea in winter either. That said - my LI does have aloe as the 2nd ingredient. But I top it off with a anti-humectant pomade so it reduces frizz effect. Plus my gel is supposed to prevent frizz too.

I would defintiely avoid the KCCC until you have more appropriate dews - it not only has aloe but also had agave nectar which is also a humectant.

Oh - they are usually ok in your rinse outs as long as you rinse well.

If you don't mind the protein - Giovanni makes a bunch of humectant free or low-humectant products and they are cheap on vitacost.com

I'm not sure if this helps, but my hair is medium/normal/normal as well. I live in Iowa and found that my hair loves Suave Naturals Ocean Breeze. I use it both as my cowash and rinse out conditioner. I wash my hair about every other day. For styling I just use a gel (L.A. Looks gel at the moment). I've been having good luck and better curl with this super simple routine! (I'm a little worried come winter though...)

I did try Suave Naturals Cherry Blossoms for a little bit (maybe two weeks) but my hair hated it so I went back to Ocean Breeze.

I am Medium-fine, normal, normal and was looking at the cherry blossoms as a co-wash. What about didn't u like?

I wish I could use La looks but my hair gets dry and straw like when I use products with protein. I recently had to switch from the coconut to the waterfall suaves because they didn't have the cherry but the cherry is the one I wanted to try.

I'm still searching for a good balance, so I've came back to this thread. I've been TOTALLY avoiding protein for the last two months. But I went for a Deva Cut and of course they used the nopoo, the one condit, and the BLeave in. No frizz no straw, major soft. So does that just prove to me that I can handle protein, because they all have protein in them?? If I were to use all three of those products daily, do you all think I would get protein build up? Are there med, texture girls with normal porosity that can handle stylers and conditioners with protein daily?? Because I wash and style daily. I loved the look I got with her (of course she's a stylist) because it looked a lot fuller and bigger clumps, less stringy. what does this mean? I've lately been using Abba natural low poo and garnier triple nutrients for a rinse out and KCKT for a leave in:sad5: and haven't got as nice of curls as she did with me. But i"m afraid to invest in Deva if I'm going to get protein build up from daily use and then have a new problem. What to do?

I use Deva nearly exclusively, and I would say I have roughly the same type of texture/porosity that you have. I have recently tried several CJ product which really turned my hair to mush - given how highly reviewed they generally are I was really surprised. Makes me think I have some protein sensitivity as I believe the CJ products have a LOT of protein.

I haven't dug into the details yet but maybe it's the amount and/or type of protein that you may have sensitivity to? What I've seen on the boards is some people can have reactions to only certain proteins, while others their hair handles just fine.

Wow! Sounds like I fall right in here with ya'll as hair twins. I thought I was 2c but starting to lean towards 3a. I have normal porosity and fine density. I'm pretty sure my hair LOVES protein. I have strong curl pattern on the underside of my hair but the top is very wavy. Since starting the CG method I have gotten much better curls and a little more even. I have a very greasy head and use Suave gentle cleanser as my poo and have been using Suave tropical coconut as my ro and leave in with Tresseme Natural on random days. I'm using LA sport gel and that seems to work really well. I had colored my hair prior to starting CG and just recolored it back to my natural blond. My curls are very unhappy and I'm not finding a good balance. Any suggestions?
