Got highlights, Hair Breakage =[

So day before yesterday, I got highlights in my hair. She said she would need to lift the color out of my hair, and I was a little weary of this. The last time I got color lifted, it looked super brassy. This time, however, my hair started breaking. It's only a little bit so far, but I have a feeling it'll get worse.
My question is, should I get my hair cut shorter than it already is? If my display picture is visible that's how short my hair is now, and was taken before re-highlighting. Or should I just go with it and condition it like crazy? I know for sure I'm going to reduce my shampoo usage. Any help is much appreciated =]

P.S., I'm mixed by the way, I don't know if that makes any difference

Whenever there is a "lifting" of color, I've always thought there was supposed to be a "depositing" of color that follows. Not sure if you just left that part out.
I just got my highlights done (had some of my existing highlights lightened a bit) about a month ago and my stylist followed my highlights with a deep moisture treatment before she styled my hair so be careful with going straight for the protein as that could potentially cause additional dryness on the areas that are frail.
