all my salons around my area as far as i know don't have deva stylists, or none that i know of anyway. and i dont want to have to go in to everysingle on asking if they have a properly-trained deva-stylist :/ HELPP??

    Bump.

I hear you... I feel like a bit of a muppet calling salons asking if they know how to cut curly hair. And of course, they say yes but generally haven't a clue. Would love to know if there are any deva stylists in Brisbane.

You should check out the article Tiffany wrote, I'm sure there's a thread around somewhere too.. About what to ask/ say at hair dresser. I've taken to doing mini trims at home and getting a cut every six months or so... Cos I found a ok hairdresser in Melbourne but it costs more then I'd usually pay.

Dw I too wish I could be flown to the US to get my hair done!!

I'm not too sure about Deva stylists but I read an article in an Aussie magazine recently about curly hair. The guy, Anthony Nader, really sounded like he knew what he was talking about. Here's another article of his. His salon is in Sydney.

That's the good news. The bad news is that I looked at his website and it says a cut from him costs $650!!! That can't be right!?! It says a cut from a senior stylist costs $70 though.

I haven't been there myself but it might be worth calling them...

that's ridiculous!! Though maybe if he has a student or something you could get it cheaper.. Some how I doubt it

Off topic... thanks for the suggestion curlywurlygurly. The conditioning balm worked a treat.

princesspie - glad its working for you. I haven't used it in ages (since I started cg), I had a habit of over conditioning with it. Keep meaning to try it again, but I'm being careful with my money atm and know if i buy one hair thing i will go crazy and buy heaps lol!

Yeah, I know what you mean by over conditioning... I want to keep using it as it gives me good second day hair but I've just got to tweak it a bit so it doesn't over condition.

He he *evil grin*... good luck with saving!!!!

I'm thinking that maybe instead of ringing around salons in Australia, we should be trying it from a different angle - asking the leading salons in NYC (including Devachan) if they've had any aussie stylists come through and train with them, then find those stylists in aus.
    Whaddya reckon? Worth a try?
I doubt Devachan/US salons will reply, but it is at least worth a try.
    Cheers
    TCG.

I emailed Deva yesterday and received this response today:

    Hi,

Thank you for your interest in Devachan! Unfortunately, we do not have any
Deva-trained stylists in Australia as of yet. In case you are not aware,
you may purchase our DevaCurl and DevaCare product line through our internet
retailer at AVEYOU Beauty Boutique - they offer shipment of our products to
    Australia!

P.S. You may also check out our Deva 3-Step process where we teach you how
to cleanse, hydrate, and style your hair to curl~fection. The video is
located at Do The Deva 3-Step: Cleanse. Hydrate. Style! - YouTube.

So not much help from 'the source'.

  • Hi ladies, I recently had my hair cut by Lucas Patterson at Project One Hair in Chippendale, Sydney. He cuts curly hair dry and curl by curl.

I was really happy with my cut and he listens to what you want, asks lots of questions and makes you feel very comfortable.

    Hi JerrY
Thanks for emailing Devachan and posting the response on the forum. I will email them as well (sorry have been o/s) so maybe they can know there is interest downunder...

cccurls - thanks for the recommendation. I'll give them a go and let the forum know how it went for me as well (different thread tho). I hope it's okay, but I've also reposted your recommendation in the 'sydney hairdresser' thread so ppl googling it can find it.

Hi, I also emailed Devachon. Got a very similar reply to above, except with an added line that my enquiry/feedback will be forwarded to their Training director.

However I will try Project One at Chippendale. Will post my experience on the other thread that's going about Sydney Curly Stylist.

Hi just thought I'd let you know, I've just returned to Sydney from the Gold Coast, but while at the Gold Coast I found the best curly hairdresser ever. Her name's Dana, salon is HairBiz Ashmore Plaza. Cost around $35 for a cut. She's great and has great curls herself. Its too far for me to go unfortunately but if you;re in Brisbane may be worth a trip, cheers Sue

I went to Lucas at Project One last night and I am very very happy with the results...he knows all the stuff we talk about and really cuts curls perfectly. He dry cuts and will teach you how to style it - lovely!

    Hi all
I am a Devacurl stylist in Australia. I've been cutting curly for quite a while & last year went to NYC to do the Devacurl course.
I cut hair dry & curl by curl & provide a tutorial on how to look after your curls as well.
I believe I am the only Devacurl specialist in Australia.
    I am in Townsville.

amandarin - which salon do you work for/do you have a website or FB page so we can get more information from you? Once I have more info about you, i will definitely make a trip to see you (I'm from Brissie)

I am currently in USA and had my hair cut using the Deva method and it is amazing. I too was wondering if there are any Deva stylists in Oz as I think it's so important that hairdressers are trained in this method.

I will also email Deva to find out if there are any Oz stylists - at least this will start to show there is a demand for this method in Oz.

Amandarin - I think I have found your website. I was thinking you were in Toowoomba not Townsville (so it's too far for me to get to). Do you come to Brissie at all? Also your website states you offer a Deva Curl inspired cut (you are a Deva Curl Deva Inspired Stylist) - what exactly does this mean? Have you received the training and certification from the Deva Salon in New York? Thank you!

    Hi Raracurls
Yes I am in Townsville but I am looking at the possibility of going to Brisbane once a month to do curly cuts and am seeking expressions of interest from those curly girls who maybe interested.
Yes, I went to NYC to do the Devacurl course as naturally curly hair is my passion.
If you would be interested in going to a curly stylist in Brisbane please let me know as it is definitely something I am working on to get set up.

For curly gals living in Sydney, I also recommend Lucas from Project One Hair. I got my hair cut today and I'm really pleased with it. For once in my life, I feel confident with a hairdresser.

    Hi Gilly07,
I sent you a request a week ago.

Amaranda, when is the next time you will come to Brisbane?

    Cheers!

Only three years after you posted this... but just thought I'd let you know I'm taking your advice! I just moved to the GC from New Zealand and Dana is still at Hair Biz so I'm making an appointment!

    Thanks for the advice!

Edit: Dana no longer works there :(

Hi, does anyone know where Dana from hair biz in Ashmore went? I got my hair cut from her after finding her details on this forum and she was GREAT! Wish I could find her again!
  • lambchoplambchop Registered Users Posts: 2
    Hi LeilaMarie,

If you want a really good curly cut hairdresser in Brisbane, try Craig Smith at Fruition in Windsor. He's an Australian Hairdresser of the year finalist all the time and has curly hair himself, so will give you a great curly curt (though not a deva cut). Carly there is also good, but think she's only a day a week. Also awesome is Minh Glennie who used to work at Tognini's and now has a home salon in Ipswich - not far at all to get a good curly haircut and excellent prices. Look her up on Facebook, Minh Glennie Hair Stylist. You'll be in good hands with these two. I've been looking for good curly cutters in Brisbane for years - it's been a real challenge! Good luck!!
