Rant, I spent money on another protein product

Goin'GreyGoin'Grey Posts: 301Registered Users
I was doing good on no/low protein.

Then I read the product reviews...I need a hard hold gel, I go get the BRHG. Silk protein, how bad can it be. Use it twice. Straw hair today, looks so dry. does not look moisturized...it just looks angry and frizzy. More money down the drain.

Guess I'm off to the swap board. Ah! When will I learn!

Argh, I do this way too often. For me, I think ADD must kick in while I'm reading those long lists of ingredients. Often end up with 'protein hair' and then find something in a product that I was SURE was ok. What's worse, during this past year my hair has started reacting to aloe as if it's a protein. Yikes - try finding something that's CG (I do try to stick with that!) and no protein and no glycerin AND no aloe. I may have to go through with my pre-CG threat... which was to just use Elmer's Glue and be done with it. Pretty sure that glue is protein-free LOL

The only thing I know that meets you new hair requirements is FSG. You have to start with NO additives. Although the temptation is great to add, especially when the video I used to make it specifically told me to add AVG, big mistake. My hair hated the AVG, but somehow the KCCC reacts OK. but I think I know why.

Now when you say your hair not liking AVG are you referring to FOTE AVG? Because this stuff my hair did not like, but when you see Aloe in KCCC it's like the stuff they sell at Trader Joe, pure no additives..I think my hair does well with that...and that is what they use in KCCC. Anyway what products are you using. Oh just thought of another product for you. Naturelle Gel from Sally's. Check it out on line.

Thank you so much for your comments!! Sadly.... FSG is not working out so well. It feels/looks great at first, but when dry the curls fall out. Everything is soft, which is nice, but tons of frizz. Have tried sealing with oil/butters... helps somewhat but only for a few hours.

As for aloe .... over the years, with the help of this forum, I got decent results with moisture-rich products with no protein or glycerin. KCCC was the BEST finishing product, pulled it all together. Past year or so, though, that dry-hard-straw feeling came back. Eventually figured out it had to be the aloe as an ingredient.

All the non-aloe gels I have tried (HH, GF, etc.) create such stickiness and/or white flakes that I just can't stand them. And gel is really what I need now.... sigh. =/

Oh - and you asked for products I am using... using tons of moisture has always been what keeps my curls intact and smooth/defined/non-frizzy. So, GVP conditioning balm or Yes to Carrots as CO and leave-in (the more the better), occasional shampoo bar + ACV rinse when things get droopy, and I've found a few good post-washing leave-ins (MyHoneyChild and As I Am has a few styling cremes and/or leave-ins/milks that are great).

Post #8 in this thread shows what I used to use, with great success....

    proteinless favorite curl creams

and your questions here made me realize I should update my "oh no!" thread from a while back, where people also suggested the FSG... I just am so frustrated, why is managing curly hair so difficult??!?!

Oh no, what if it's the aloe?

GG, did you use the BRHG alone? I find I also have problems with it if I use it by itself, but if I use it mixed with another gel, I get the hold without the straw. Just a teeny dab of it, mixed in my palm with a generous squirt of my regular non-protein gel, does the trick.

I used it full strength (BRHg) then mixed with Kccc, I guess I have to use less, but I'm off protein for now for a while to recover.

Thank you! I will try again in a few weeks.

OK now I remember you. See my routine worked perfectly in winter too, then the season changes and I'm like what the heck was I doing last summer that worked. After reading your products that worked...a lot creams, seems to me this would work in Winter, but not enough hold for summer. My problem too that's how I went to the BRHG and we all know how that turned out. I think I'm going to try Naturelle again. I have to check if it have aloe for you, but it's really a winter gel. Ah.
The FSG is not enough hold for summer I agree.

I just did the same as you GG, I purchased a Tresemme gel (clean hold) and it has Keratin Amino Acids and a water soluble cone (which is okay with me). I am going to give it a try and see if I can handle this protein. I think there is a protein sensitive member who said this is the only protein their hair is okay with.

    Here's the ingredient list:

Water, VP/Dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate Copolymer, PPG 5 Ceteth 20, Triispropanolamine, Oleth 20, Carbomer, PVP, DMDM Hydantoin, Sorbitol, Propylene Glycol, Fragrance, PEG 12 Dimethicone, Olealkonium Chloride, Tetrasodium EDTA, Panthenol, Linalool, Hexylcinnamal, Gelatin/Keratin Amino Acids/Lysine Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Limonene, Butylphenyl, Butylphenyl Methypropional, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Citronellol, Ext Violet 2

GoinGrey - not sure why, but I stopped getting updates for this thread until LaurieS posted. Weirdness!

The As I Am "Moisture Milk" doesn't have any actual 'milk' type ingredients in it - not that I can tell. But, as I mentioned earlier, it's not unusual for me to read and re-read and still miss things! Plus, I'm not as knowledgeable about ingredients as I'd like to be.

You're right that winter products don't always carry over. Usually, though, I've been ok as long as I used KCCC on top of everything. That's what finally convinced me that the aloe has started acting like a protein.

Here's the As I Am "Moisture Milk" ingredients from their website:

Aqueous (Water, Aqua Purificada, Purified) Extracts: Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root¹, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil1, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil¹, Theobromo Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter¹, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)¹, Cetearyl Alcohol¹, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil¹, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil¹, Beeswax¹, Polyacrylamide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Laureth-7, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil¹, Tocopheryl Linoleate, BHT, Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Bicarbonate, Potassium Sorbate, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Xanthan Gum¹, Fragrance/Parfume, Limonene, Cetyl Alcohol2 Polysorbate 60, PEG-75 Lanolin, Laureth-9.

Hi Rebecca, looks like I lost track of this post. To my eye the ingredients in your As I Am Moisture Milk look protein free. I'm stunned, because every "milk" product I've looked at has protein.

    Good job, carry on ;)

It's hard to keep track of all that goes on here at nc.com! The As I Am Moisture Milk has been terrific, and of course now I want to whine about the cost... which really isn't all that bad but it seems the cheap stuff never works for me LOL

And by the way, my apologies for totally taking over your original thread. =(

I used to do this A LOT!! :) It took me a while to learn that protein is no good in my hair! ;) My first real gel when I went CG (and when I wasn't too familiar with ingredient labels) was La Bella Lots of Curls, which I loved, but it turned my hair to straw because of the Keratin protein in it. So I bought LALSG, and...shock of all shocks! It had Keratin protein in it, too! ;)Granted, this stuff is cheap, but I can't handle wasting stuff. :) Then, I went back to my good old Lots of Curls. Even though it had protein. And my hair was like straw the whole time. (And you're all sitting there thinking, when will she EVER learn!! :D) Well, I finally did learn. And now I've gone completely protein free, except for some aloe, and I love it! But, just like you, Goin' Grey, I've always wanted to try (okay, always been DIEING to try) BRHG! Thank you for the reminder NOT to! :)

LaurieS -- the only kind of protein I've ever tried is Keratin Amino Acids. And it turned my hair to straw! I really hope it works for you, though! I don't think I'm quite as protein sensitive as you are, though. :( But I hope you have good luck with it!

    As I Am Naturally

I'm surprised this didn't affect your hair. It has soy and soy is a protein. But not all proteins affect everyone. Some can handle one over the others.

It seems my hair doesn't like any on a daily basis. The occasional PT (once every other month) is ok. But

I can't handle wheat, soy, Keratin,
silk, or hops. In any of my daily products. They make my hair feel crunchy and straw like.

Unfortunately I just figured this out after 3 months of being CG and just about everything I use has one or more of those ingredients in it. No wonder I was hating being CG. I was about to rip out my hair. LOL

Now that I know the issue, I'm going to finish what I have (I HATE waste) and then I am going protein FREE.
