Curlaway Natural Relaxer by Ian Charles.

Has anyone tried the Curlaway natural relaxer? I just picked it up today because I am curious about the way it claims to gently loosen the curl texture without any chemicals. I am just hesitant about natural relaxers but this one isn't permanent.

I have been going natural for 13 months, and have more than 6inches of new growth (though it may be more since i haven't meassured it recently) and I still have not gotten the big chop yet, but i am hoping to do it by march (my b-day)... I just want my coarse 3B curls to be a bit more manageable before I chop.

So I will use this space to update you guys and let you know how everything is going with this "natural relaxer"... Wish me luck! Please post your comments if you have any experience with this product. THANKS!

P.S. the website for the natural relaxer is.... /home/leaving?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.curlaway.com%2F" class="Popup

So I tried the curlaway gel last night. When I washed it out this morning my hair was fantastic! It made my curls way more defined, soft and so easy to manage (not to mention it rained all day and for the first time I had nearly NO frizz)! I'm still a 3b/c and I want to keep it that way cause I never want to go straight again so I think I am going to use the gel again next week and then ONLY once a month after that to maintain the managability. I will post pictures soon!

I may try it. I have been looking for something to soften my hair texture and make it more manageable but I dont want it straight.

Tell me........... did it make your hair more straight? How did you apply it to keep the curl but just soften it?

My hair is not straight at all. If someone wants straight hair they would have to apply it every week or every other week for an extended period of time. The way it works is that it gradually loosens the curl, so once you get to a texture that you like, then just space out the applications about 1 or 2 months apart. The website says hair goes back to its natural state if you don't use the product for about 8 weeks.

Curlaway is a gel and so I just applied it to my curly hair (I still have relaxed ends I haven't cut), I left it on over night and in the morning I washed it out and conditioned then I pulled my hair in a pony tail so that my curls were slightly pulled while they were drying. It was pretty easy.

Well, I am going to do another application this week(end)!

There is a beauty supply store near me, so I'm gonna go buy some tommorow.

Did you apply it like a relaxer? How did you wear your hair at night?

I applied it like a relaxer, one section of hair at a time. I pulled my hair in a pony tail so that my curly hair was lying flat on my head and I just braided the ponytail so that the rest of my hair wouldn't get frizzy and crazy durring the night.

I have been using curlaway for three days now. When they say gradually makes hair straight they were not lying. My hair has lost none of its curl. The only change I notice is that is holds without gel I can just use leave in and my hair will last. I'm gonna use a few more times because I want my roots a little looser, softer, and less frizzy hopefully it will change that.

I think I just found my HG in Rhassoul clay, it will not permantely change the texture just smooth the cuticle (I just washed and dc'ed a week after treatment and the hair still feels great) and help the hair retain moisture (do a dc after cla treatment) :)

I have never heard of Rhassoul clay. Could you tell me the amount you use and how much oil you add?

Do you apply it like a moisturizer or leave in conditioner or do you wear it then wash it out?

It would be interesting to see how it works with the curlaway gel I am using.

I deffinately need to to hear more about this. My curls can be difficult to manage sometimes and I would like them to be looser. I never want straight hair again, it just seems like the hair underneath is so smooth and silky and much looser, I would like the top part to be that way too. So who has used it, what were your results. Does it burn like a relaxer, I really really don't wanna fry my hair again.

Back on Cones,so now my routine is,wash with Deva No-Poo every other day or so. Occasionally use 365 sulfate free, maybe use low sulfate shampoo mixed with conditioner once every two weeks are longer. I condition with Aussie Moist or HEHH. I style with a little GF TN,and finish up with tons of GN Pure Clean Smoothing Cream. No frizz...slippy, happy hair.

It sounds like it. I haven't gotten it yet but from what I've read here and on the website it says it gradually and naturally loosens curl from your hair. I would think beings it's so gradual it would work faster on 2a-3c. I'm not sure.

I just got Curlaway today. I will be trying it out tonight. I am gonna try it on the back underneath part of my hair, my neck hair, first. Just incase I get any breakage you won't be able to see it. But I have read such good reviews and I am hopeful. Also it seems like it will either work...or at least just do nothing. So keep your fingers crossed!

I've always been curious about natural relaxers. Have anyone used that kind called Baka? There's another called Naturalaxer. If you have good results with the Curlaway, then I think I'll be ordering myself some to help with my transition. I'll be checking back on you Brown&Curly!

Check me out!! I have a fotki!!

Due to a serious hiatus and complete laziness (lol), my fotki albums are all locked. When im up to updating I'll have them opened for you all to view. Until then...no peeking :) Thanks!

I think I used some kind of natrulaxer before...it was like dust and you mixed it with water to make this mud. It was messy and hard to spread, didn't do much so I stopped using it. If this Curlaway goes well though I will stick with it...I'll even order another jar. I put it on tonight...so far so good. The smell isn't great...it's not like a perfume I would want or anything..but it's not awful! It's tolerable! It doesn't tingle or burn and I didn't even need to use gloves to put it on.

Well..so far so good. I rinsed the stuff off this morning and that part of my hair did seem really really soft and smooth. I did it on the underneath part of my hair and it that part does seem a little heavier and it hangs just a little lower down my back so the curls must be a little looser. Maybe it's just wishful thinking but if nothing else it did no damage. And I put it on at around 7 last night and woke up to wash it out at about 6 this morning. It feels real smooth I can't wait to use it on my whole head. It is really smooth and soft, I can see how with continued use it could loosen my curls and help my hair be healthier. I just ordered more jars. I'll keep you posted.

Ok...I put it on my whole head last night and slept with it. I rinsed it out this morning. It was all really soft and smooth, I can deffinaltely see how continued use would loosen my curls. I can see a slight difference in the curls as far as loosness goes, but mostly I just have almost no frizz. I have this one part at the top of my hair around my hairline that seems to be thining because of breakage and always gets tangles so I spray no mre tangles on that part just so I can comb it to smooth it out, today I was able to comb it with no spray. It's shiny and soft...I will deffinately keep using it. I wanna see how much it will do. So far I'm real happy. I got 4 more jars coming.

Curlaway does work, but for some people the smell isn't good for using it regularly. It loosens the curl pattern a bit after first use and prolonged use can straighten the hair. It is not alkaline like other traditional relaxers. There is a more detailed review here.

So its basically like a texturizer? have any of you tried straightening your hair with this stuff in it?
  • HairRelaxerHairRelaxer Posts: 4Registered Users
I had tried it but couldn't keep up with the regime and use it for prolonged time. I tried it weekly once for 4 weeks. It does what it says but I am not sure about the long term side effects. Some people do use it long term and seem to like it without any major issues.

Not sure when you last tried it but it has a new, nice scent now. Also I found if you go to their website (Ian Charles-Home | Curlaway Curl Relaxer | Natural hair relaxer | Chemical free relaxer | No lye relaxer), they have a new way to apply it with heat that got my hair super smooth in only an hour or so. I love this stuff.
