What is the purpose of applying oil before shampooing?

msaviemsavie Posts: 66Registered Users
I've been reading alot of comments from people who put oil on their hair before they shampoo. I decided to try it but did not see any noticeable difference in my hair.

So I jsut wanted to know: What is the purpose of that? And is there any special technique or oil that should be used?

    It's called pre-poo
    Benefits
Severely reduces hydral fatigue (the swelling and shrinking of the hair folic when it gets wet) which reduced hairs vulnerability 2) keeping hair from feeling striped after shampooing 3) reduced detangling time.
    4) keeps. Hair soft

    Some use coconut oil
I use a mixture of EVOO and honey

Benefits of honey lol another blog lol

Ahhhh. I see. Thanks for clarifying that for me. I used coconut oil and applied it to my scalp. Must it also be applied to the ends of the hair? Should the hair be dry or wet? Am I supposed to apply any heat and how long should I keep it on for?

I know I'm asking a lot of questions. Just want to make sure I get it right.

Thanks for posting this. I, myself, have been seeing the same comments made about oiling before pooing and even using it while DC'ing.

    I agree with this.

I normally use coconut oil for pre-poo's because it penetrates deep into the strands and protects the hair.

I mist my hair with water or a water based spray then apply the coconut oil. I cover my hair with a plastic shower cap for a minimum of 15 mins. The heat that is generated from my head helps the coconut oil to penetrate my strands.

Some people apply the oil to dry hair, but that just makes my hair brittle and vulnerable to breakage.

This keeps your hair from drying out, & I usually use either castor oil or vatika frosting by hairveda. I actually love this process of " pre-poo'ing" and it's help promote hair growth for me :-)

Thanks ladies. Now that I am aware of the benefits I intend to make this a regular part of my hair care routine.

In all honesty i wouldn't do it. Because you have to wash out the oil anyway LOL. That may work for those women not sure. But for me i just use regular shampoo to wash out everything(not even moisturizing shampoo because i want my hair to feel squeeky clean) then i re-moisturize it with conditioner for like 30min-1hour then use another conditioner to detangle and braid my hair after combed detangled and rinse with braids still intact. This works well for me. because when my hair dries out it's still detangled. If i need moisture i just use my trustly Hollywood Beauty Olive oil. I have 4b/c or whatever type hair which is armpit length when straightened, i've been doing this for a while and my hair does grow and i get very little breakage.

Just saying this is what i do, if oil in your hair before wash works for you KEEP DOING IT! But i'm just saying i wouldn't because i want my hair to be clean of all that oil and hair products to start new after my wash.

I think I understand where you are coming from because before I started doing hair I didn't understand the purpose of applying products before shampooing the hair. I thought it was a waste of product because the product was going to be washed away when the hair is shampooed.

Whilst pre-shampoo treatments are not a necessity they can be very beneficial as they protect the hair from harsh shampoos and water damage.

OP, it's also worth noting that some people apply conditioner to their hair before they shampoo. Not all conditioners are great for this purpose because some conditioners aren't designed to penetrate the hair shaft. Conditioners that do not penetrate well will not offer as much protection to the hair.

The instructions for the Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner outline that it can be used to deep condition the hair before the hair is shampooed. It says "For deep conditioning: Apply to dry hair and distribute from scalp to ends. Leave on for 15 minutes, then shampoo and condition hair as usual". I've used this product as a pre-poo and I loved it.

I alternate between oil pre-poos and conditioner pre-poos. However, I do not pre-poo when I am co washing my hair.

    +1

I agree with the above. I also (finger) detangle when I pre-poo with coconut oil. Damp hair + oil = enough slip for me.

I too use coconut oil to prepoo...well the first time I did it I prepoo'd for an hr but was not too happy w/the effects. So I began using it as an overnight DT the evening before wash day & it took about a month to see full effects.

Now doing it as an overnight DT is a staple in my reggie. My hair has never been softer (including the relaxed ends), been more moisturized & is easier to detangle....this I can not complain about!
