Finally attempted my first twist out. I just took the twists out, put a little shea butter on my edges and pinned the curls to the side. I think the end result came out pretty good:D

Congrats on the successful do! I put my hair into bantu knots on wash day and keep them in till the next wash day most of time. So when I untwist them I'm generally like 'i hope it wouldn't turn out like this if I took them out the next day'' Lol

I don't know what to do with my hair! I've been transitions for about a year now & I think my hair is DAMAGED. I have major split ends & my hair is very dry.
What should I do?? I have a limited amount of funds

Which hair is splitting, your new growth or your relaxed hair? Are you experiencing breakage? Protein treatments are good while you transition. You can make a protein treatment at home using an egg, some yogurt, and oil like EVOO. You can also just add an egg to some cheapie conditioner likeVO5.

You can also do some deep treatments for moisture. Honey mixed with EVOO or castor oil applied to damp hair & covered with a plastic cap for about 15-30 min works well.

You can find some inexpensive cholesterol like Lustrasilk at Sally or local BSS stores. Aloe Vera gel & juice are relatively inexpensive, help balance pH, assist with moisture, and can be found at places like Walmart.

I've been natural for about a year and a half now & I don't spend a lot on products. My philosophy is that there is no reason for going natural or being natural to break the bank.

    Hello fellow transitioners,

I have been transitioning for 7 months now. I don't plan on going back to a relaxer, because I am in love with my hair. I love seeing my 3c curls!

I was wondering if anyone is wearing a sew in weave as a protective style? If so how are you doing your treaments on your hair? Currently I moisturize often through the week and wear two corn rolls. I have my Saturday wash day, where my hair gets pampered. With a sew in I wouldn't be able to keep up this regimen, will I?

I plan on redoing my sew in bi-weekly, and having my moisturizer in a spray bottle so I can spray the braids. I also plan on putting my coconut oil on the braids too. Do you think this plan will work?

I've been transitioning for over a yr, not w/a sew-in but w/a quick weave. Occasionally I'll wear my hair out in a bun. I wash and pamper my hair every Sunday (starting w/an overnight coconut oil DT and after I'm done pampering I place my hair into bantu knots which stay in until the next wash day unless I'm going out and I take out some hair to blend into the quick weave.

During the week I spritz my hair w/distilled water & grapeseed oil twice daily until wash day. It's been that simple and I have had no major issues (knock on wood) so far. I plan to transition for at least 3 years doing just this.

No problem. Besides you know what they say...if it ain't broke don't fix it! You found something that works for you so keep it up. Plus I believe the fact that I only manipulate my hair once a week does wonders for helping me retain length as well as minimize breakage related to the relaxed ends.

I think sticking to your 2week schedule would be fine as long as you moisturize your hair each day and deep condition each time you take it out.

Good luck and if you wanna share stories or just chat you know where I am. Lol!

Just wanted to check in w/you ladies and see how everyone was doing. I am still enjoying my transition and while I was honestly tempted to chop on Sunday when I was washing my hair I knew I couldn't bc my shrinkage was just too much. So the only thing I am debating now is whether to continue on until I hit yr 3 or 4. I guess I will just wait and see how things go.

Hope everyone else is doing well!

I'm doing okay this week. I put my hair in mini twists 2 days ago but ended up taking them out today because I really didn't like how they looked on me *shrugs* I am currently fighting the urge to straighten my hair. I don't want to apply any type of heat to my hair for at least another 5 months so I can get more of my relaxed ends trimmed off. I had to log off of YouTube last night because I found myself watching video after video of beautiful natural roller sets and silk wraps. We'll see how long I can stay away from the heat

Hey girls! I'm still here. Have been experimenting with a variety of buns and braids. So far so good. Now that I've hit 10 months it really seems to have gotten easier. My real trouble was at the beginning when I didn't know what the heck to do with my edges but now a little gel and off I go. I've really stayed away from heat for the past 10 months (straightened 2 times) but lately I've been contemplating buying a flat iron. Probably wouldn't use it a lot but just want to have another option of how to style my hair from time to time.

I understand how you feel about styling, I used to get a little frustrated in the beginning when I tried styles and they didn't quite turn out right. Now I don't even bother. I just wash, condition, DT and place my hair into bantu knots that stay in until the next wash day. I take one knot out and blend into a quick weave if I'm planning on going anywhere but other than that I may occasionally place my hair into a bun.

I get both of you ladies getting the urge to straighten and wanting another styling option. I have seen some beautiful youtube videos of naturals straightening their hair and I wanna do it too!Lol. However I have only straightened my hair once since the beginning of my transition and I'm planning on buying an Instyler for Christmas but don't know if I will do it then or wait until January when I hit my 18month mark. Idk. I really don't think straightening is all that bad as long as you use a heat protectant, don't turn the temp up too high and don't straighten to often.

Just checking in... yesterday was wash day. I did a chamomile tea rinse and my hair loved it. This morn when I woke up I couldn't decide what to do with my hair - it has gotten super thick! So I decided to to do two strand twists, not flat twists. I think I can rock that for a bit with some nice scarfs and hats. The last two days I will take it down and wear it curly. Hope it works!

I was reading about tea rinses last night and I might start doing that. Any particular ones you like? Do you rinse them out or do you just leave it in the hair for a particular amount of time?

You can use black, green, rosemarry, nettle, chamomile. They all strengthen your hair, but rosemary will darken your color and chamomile will lighten. I like chamomile best, because it made my hair soft, my waves pop, and hardly any breakage. Also if you have any scalp irritations or dandruff, chamomile or rosemary will quickly fix it. After I shampoo, I rinse with water, then rinse with tea, then rinse with water. Some people will leave the tea in, but my nose can't handle that.

I know you said that you rinse the tea out but have you read anything or seen any videos of those who leave theirs in and whether or not the smell goes away after your hair dries? I was just curious bc I know w/the acv rinses that the smell goes away once the hair dries...however in the mean time the smell does get quite bad. Lol

I just read through this whole thread and it definitely helps knowing there are other curlies going through the same thing I am!

I've been transitioning for... about 15 or 16 months now, and it is frustrating! My Korean mother had me believing straight hair was the only pretty hair, and had no idea what to do with my unruly mixed head while I was growing up. I had been getting relaxers since I was about 7, and once I was grown and out of the house the trend continued.

When I first stopped relaxing my hair was about chin length curly, and severely damaged. I found nc.com and with the help of you awesome curlies started learning to love my hair again. About a week ago I got my hair to APL and was excited about FINALLY getting some length back... until I got 3 inches cut of relaxed hair in a moment of frustration. Now, curly, I am right below chin length.

I feel like this process will never end! Plus, I my natural has SO much volume, when I try to wash and go you can really tell between the two textures, and I hate how its so big around my face and limp and dangly by my chin.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this thread! I will definitely keep an eye on this.

Also I had never heard of bantu knots before! I've tried braid outs and 2 strand twists but they don't work for me as much. I am definitely trying this tonight... thank goodness for YouTube or I wouldn't be able to do anything!

Lol. Youtube and internet vids have definitely helped me learn various styling methods. While I tend to keep everything as simple as possible its always nice to have something to fall bk on on a rainy day you know. It seems like we have been transitioning for the same amount of time. Do you have any idea how long you think you will transition for?

This knowledge of bantu knots has definitely changed my mind! I was just getting sooo frustrated with my tightly coiled crown and limp ends. I did the bantu knot out last night and it was AWESOME! I got big curls from top to bottom, which has never happened before, not with popping, diffusing, anything else!

Granted, it was the first time I had ever done them so I have to tweak, but I posted a pic.

Now that I have this option, I'm.going to try not to BC. I'm not on a specific deadline, but I would like my natural hair to reach my chin, and thatll take... prob 2 years. So I'm in it for the long haul!

    So pretty!! Love the hair![/QUOTE]

Thank you :) it came out good that first time, but the second time I tried it looked pretty bad... I have layers and the shorter layers in the knots were unraveling and poking out before I got the knot completely wrapped around itself. Maybe I needed to get my hair more damp?

Also wash n gos usually come out pretty bad for me because of two things, frizz at the crown and my relaxed ends hanging like dead weight. And I get so tired of the steps, ice queen, not touching it, promoting clumps, plopping, mousse, gel, oil, diffusing, just to have it look like Crap.

So after the failed bantu knot attempt, I just said to heck with it! I cowashed, left some conditioner in, slapped in some oil, not caring about frizz ,and let it air dry. This turned into the best wash n go I've done in WEEKS. Hardly any frizz at the crown and my relaxed ends had a little more curl than usual! I tried to wash n go this morning and it turned out a hot mess, so I had to throw it in a ponytail.

Sorry that was long, but the point is I can do the EXACT same routine two days in a row and get very different results. Does this happen to anyone else? I think my hair has its off days just like me :)

    Hey ladies!
I just had to share because I'm so happy...I finally did a good twist out!!! The trick was doing it with damp hair instead of dry. For the next time I'll tweak it by using my extreme gel instead of KCCC (it left my front too crunchy). The result was fly though.

Glad to hear you had good results! Its always a good feeling to try a hairstyle w/success. I did another homemade PT yesterday and each time I do one I am beyond surprised by how much curl definition and shine it gives me. I almost don't wanna wash it out of my hair....if only it weren't for that horrid mayo and egg smell! Lol.

Congrats on making the decision to transition! This journey is a very personal one and I have to say that whether you ultimately decide to BC or transition for the long haul it is up to you. The only thing I will say is to make sure you do your research. Look at youtube vids, check out blogs, websites, etc related to all the advice you want and/or need. If you get tired of doing your hair or get frustrated then try braids, corn rows, wigs, weaves, etc to give yourself and your hair a break...especially before you decide to BC. Imo you can always afford to wait another week or even month to try a hair style before Bc'ing but if you go ahead and chop and end up hating it then it can take a major toll on you emotionally if you aren't ready for it...especially if you don't have added support in the form of family, friends or a SO. Good luck and feel free to post as many questions as you need to!

So while detangling my hair last night during my weekly wash session, I realized that I may not make it to my 3 or 4 year 'transitioning' mark. Not bc I don't want to but bc I really don't have that much relaxed ends left. I never trim my hair, I only dust it but w/the amount of relaxed ends I have left its very possible that I will more than likely be all natural either before or by my 2yr transitioning mark next July.

The only reason I was pushing for 3 or 4 years was for the growth so I guess its really no biggie if all the relaxed ends are gone in another 8 months, it will just mean after that point I will only be dealing will my natural hair which is really the point of all this anyway right:laughing6:.

That's do awesome Jaylensmami10!! I was looking at my new growth too this week when I washed an I notice that it was already down to almost shoulder length (in only 10 months yay me!!!). The problem is that my hair is a little below BSL so it's gonna take a LOT of trimmings to get rid of the relaxed ends. I'm totally ok with that.
