Curls Spiral Curls Cream

I was thinking about purchasing this product after hearing some raves about it the other day. I saw the ingredients on the Curls website and they have a couple cones listed in the ingredients of this but the Product Review on this website has different stuff listed. Has this been reformulated or can someone tell me which one is right? Thanks! :D

I think all that's changed is the scent  . Alot of gals didn't like the candy smell of the original but I sure did. Now it smells like a lite version of the Ecstasy Hair Tea, which I can't stand the smell of  . Wished I'd have known about the scent change - I wouldn't have gotten it if I had.

Hmmm, I have (& love) the older version of the Curls Spiral Cream, & I don't remember it having those cones in it.... I'm at work right now, so I don't have the bottle here, but I'll definitely have to check when I get home. I'm really curious now, because I usually stay away from cones in my styling products as they really tend to weigh my hair down

I'd be grateful if someone would email me if we find out for sure the ingredients have changed. And if you have the new ingreds to email me, too, I'd be very grateful.

When did that formula change? So if I have a sample that smells cotton candy-like, it's the old formulation?

Can someone confirm if this the correct new ingred list (from curls.biz):

purified water, glycerin, emulsifying wax nf, polyimide-1, sunflower oil, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, octyl palmitate, silk protein, sodium carbomer, guar hydroxypropyl, trimonium chloride, panthenol, shea butter, wheat germ oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, amodimethicone, dimethicone, sodium benzoate, potassium benzoate, ethyl hexyl glycerin, fragrance

I have the old ingred list as:

purified water, soybean oil, propylene glycol, cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, glyceryl stearate, polyquaternium-11, hydroxypropyl guar, methylisothiazolinone, fragrance

...so that's a pretty significant change with polymide-1 instead of polyquat-11 for hold (see the CurlChemist's great article this month at http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlcolumns/articles.php?id=8821), not to mention all the additional oils, protein, and cones (thankfully, no cyclopentasiloxane though).

Yes! Those are the ingredients that I saw on the Curls website the other day. I think I may copy the list that is here and e-mail the owner and ask her what's going on. I'll let everyone know what I find out!

My "old" formula bottle smells like watermelon jolly ranchers & that 2nd list of ingredients that you have posted, LB, look familiar.

I'm 99.9999% positive that my bottle does NOT have cones on the ingredient list, because I stay away from too many in my stylers (even the a-cone) as they tend to weigh my hair down (or make it too slippery & it won't hold the curl).

Bottle I have at home (smells like Eau de Cherry Lifesaver) does not have any 'cone ingredients, but I would be interested in clarification on this. There seem to have been a few ingredients changes on the Curls products.

Okay, I e-mailed Mahisha and here is what was said:

    I said something like this:

I noticed the other day that the posted list of ingredients that you have for the Spiral Curl Cream are different than the ones posted on naturallycurly.com. The list that we have posted is: Purified water, soybean oil, propylene glycol, cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, glycerly stearate, polyquaternium-11, hydroxypropyl guar, methylisothiazolinone, fragrance.

The list posted on your website is very different and in fact contains some
silicones that some of us try to stay away from.

I tham asked if the product had been reformulated.

She replied something along the lines of:

Naturally Curly has old versions for some time...the Curls site is updated with current ingredient lists. Please reference the Curls site if there are any questions on ingredients.

So it looks like the cones are here to stay.....has anyone ordered this recently that can confirm?? Hope this helps everyone who was thinking about ordering this!

ETA: paraphrases of the e-mails sent between the two of us. I apologize if anyone was upset by this. I was not aware of this rule. I would like to add however that no matter how much I paraphrase, I still feel that the answer I received was vague, direct quote or not! This is not the first time I have e-mailed a question and felt that I get a vague answer in return. Why the owner didn't feel that I was good enough to be "privy" to the complete answer that was eventually received is beyond me. So, again, sorry for the upset and have a nice day! :D

Curls Spiral Curl Cream does have a new ingredient listing, and for anyone that would like to check it out, it is currently posted on the Curls website. This new product is not cone free and yes it does have a new scent to it. It now has the same scent as Curls Asian Hair Tea Conditioner, but in a slighty smaller amount.

For anyone that has any other questions or concerns regarding Curls products, it would be best to contact the owner Mahisha herself so that she can answer your comments respectively.

Wow - I just checked the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Curls Milkshake[/buylink] ingredients as I was going to buy a new one:

    New ingredients:
Purified water, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, cetaaryl alcohol, behentrimonium methosulfate, jojoba oil, cetrimonium chloride, soy protein, soyamidoprpylkonium chloride, allantoin, soy lecithin, beeswax milk, coconut milk, aloe vera milk, milk amino acids, buttermilk, arnica extract, lavender extract, chamomile extract, white tea extract, methylisothiazolinone, fragrance

Old ingredients (according to my container)
Coconut milk, sweet almond milk, soy milk, cetearyl alcohol, coconut oil, olive oil, pomegranate seed oil, monoi de tahita, avocado oil, stearalkonium chloride, plumeria extract, rosemary extract, fragrance.

To me that's not just a reformulation - it's a totally different product.
I don't think I'm going to buy it now as it's trying something totally new rather than something that is tried and trusted.

I emailed Mahisha this a.m. regarding the products and asked if the SCC was reformulated. I also asked about using Curly Q products. I received a vague answer on not layering styling products ([buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Milkshake[/buylink] and Souffle) and to use SCC for extra hold.
It's disappointing to not receive a straight answer on products and have no idea what you are getting. I was ready to place an order after a decent few days with a sample of [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Milkshake[/buylink] but think I will keep experimenting with other products. Well great... I got my curls samples from sistasplace, and the samples are in small containers w/o ingredient listings. How the heck am I supposed to know which one I'm trying?? :? My CSC does smell like candy, so I guess it's the old one. No point trying to get it to work for me though, since it's pretty much discontinued. Now I see why NC.com stopped carrying Curls products... Who wants to deal with all this confusion?

I've gotten frustrated a few times after working to get one of her products to work for me, only to have it change-up.

As for NC.com, since they're all about the most-awesome CS, I think it was wise of them to distance themselves since the products were available at curls.biz. CurlMart is great about offering the super-hard-to-get products (like Elucence), but, when something's easy to get elsewhere, I can see them being more selective in their offerings.

Honestly, there is just too much confusion in the products to make me want to use them. Not knowing what ingredients I'm putting in my hair or which ingredients list to go by, not to mention having to actually contact the owner just to try and get straight answers is too annoying for me. The only product I would really want to order is the CEAHT conditioner since I do love that one, but to have to order from a separate source for just one conditioner, and I do hate to have to pay separate shipping charges just for that. Oh well, life goes on.

I think that it is quite unneccesary for others here to post about them supposedly knowing firsthand that NC distanced themselves from Curls by their stopping the sale of Curls products here, when only the owners of NC and Mahisha were involved in that decision. Not I or anyone else! And none of us here at NC, other than the owners, have that right to do so, legally if that is the case, in posting such information. Which never to my knowledge has ever been posted by any of the moderators here.

I have actually gotten a chance after emailing the owner of Curls myself last night, regarding the ingredient changes that are on the Curls website and here is what I personally found out:

Curls ran the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Milkshake[/buylink] Special, in which they offered customers an opportunity to custom blend the fragrances...that was formulated differently to enable customers to blend the fragrances, at home, without creating chemical issues, etc. The ingredients of Curls products will always be correct and listed on their website, and the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Milkshake[/buylink] is the same...as the original, and is on their site. The promo ran for about 2 months or so and that was the only change. Even the performance was exactly the same..the way her chemist formulated it to be "custom blended safe."

And the Curls Spiral Curl Cream reformulation has actually been out for a while and is not actually new. It actually was replaced before [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Whipped-Cream-p-883.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Whipped-Cream]Curls Whipped Cream[/buylink] and Curl Souffle were replaced in November 2006. The only thing that seems to be new to a lot of us are the actual ingredient listing. Also all of Curls vendors were made aware of this change Because a lot of us still have and are using the original version. And had not switched over to using the one that does have cones in it. Curls Spiral Cream had been OUT OF STOCK for a period of time that did occur within the last couple of months. But during that time a posting was made by the owner on her website making everyone aware that changes were being made to this product. And all of the Curls vendors were made aware of the change(and thus the downtime) during that period.

The only reason why I didn't post the actual email from the owner of Curls, Mahisha, replying back to my questions, but decided to shorten up the actual facts that were parlayed back to me is because of this. I have still not gotten a clear understanding on whether it is okay to post such emails or not here.

And if anyone here has any doubts regarding what I have just posted, you can by all means contact the owner, Mahisha, herself, regarding such matters.

Not sure if this references my comment, but just in case, I'll clarify.
As for NC.com, since they're all about the most-awesome CS, I think it was wise of them to distance themselves since the products were available at curls.biz.

I think the world of CurlMart CS. When formulations change, there is a possibility during the period when the stock of the first formula and second formula transition that the website could be different than the product sent. Because CurlMart values CS, I believe they would refund/exchange/make right on any discrepancies if someone got a formula different from the one on CurlMart's website. Since they have many different brands, it's more difficult to keep track of when the bottles in their stock would start.

That isn't to say that Curls wouldn't make things right with customers. I would think that Curls' site carrying just Curls products would notice when the formulations transitioned and would update the website as they have. I'm just saying for the size of stock in CurlMart and Curls' changes appearing to me to be more frequent than most of the brands in CurlMart, it would be easier to let people go to curls.biz directly.

The "distance" I speak of between NC.com and Curls would be that CurlMart doesn't carry Curls products anymore. If there's more to the story, that's not my business. Distance was just a vague wording choice.
CurlMart is great about offering the super-hard-to-get products (like Elucence), but, when something's easy to get elsewhere, I can see them being more selective in their offerings.

When CurlMart was first born, it was providing only a few really hard-to-get products like Elucence (only sold in salons and CurlMart without being diverted/counterfeit) and Boots Curling Cream from the UK. A few other companies added to their offering and the choices grew. But the spirit of CurlMart initially seemed (my impression) to be to bring the products to the masses that were difficult to obtain. My point here was to say that since Curls products are sold at curls.biz, they can be orderred there just as easy (and get points, etc).

Anyway, I just wanted to clarify to avoid misunderstandings. Thanks, SYB, for drawing to my attention that I needed to be more specific to avoid misunderstandings, saying that the indirect comment was addressing what I had written. (If I'm not the person referenced, well, at least I'm more detailed and clear. )

Well - First pink Boots goes away . Then when I find Spiral Curls cream to replace it it has gone away to. I don't do cones so I won't be buying it anymore. Well since the third time is supposed to be the charm I hope the next styler I find that really! works stays a while.

Now I also need to find an alternative to Elucence that I can purchase locally. First I found the Suave Awaphuii condition and then it went away .... well I just don't get the lack of stability in these hair products.

I was also nervous using it as a leave-in, but someone else said they did and it was fine. I believe it was "She" and she has very pretty, blonde curls. So if it doesn't show up on blonde, I imagine it would be ok for most.
