i have a 'cheating' version of clipping the roots -- i do not use clips as mostly my hair looks strange afterwards.
what i do is i dab some deep conditioner (ssdd or cj rehab) at the roots around my face, and it dries lifting my hair up naturally, into a root curl. you could probably do this with many products, curl creams, gels...

    3a, some 2c & 3b, medium texture, porosity normal, low elasticity :-(
washing/cowashing, conditioning, protein tx: curl junkie products
leave in:cj conditioners and treatments as leave in
styling: cj aloe fix gel, cj pattern pusha, cj honey butta leave in, cj cccc, cj ciab.

I'm not sure which octopus clips you mean. Do you have a link or a photo? (I use a bunch of different clips, including octopus clips, so I MAY have an answer for you. ;) )

question: If I part my hair on the side, would that change the way I clip? Is it best to clip with the hair kind of all smoothed back on top, or already parted??

Any pharmacy or Sally's-type store will have them. Here's a link to the ones at Sally's: Sally Beauty Supply

I clip differently. I follow a method I saw on youtube but unfortunately the video is now gone. After I arrange my part with a rat tail comb, I lift a clump towards the back of my part. I push it towards the part so it creates an arch and then I slide the clip around it so the clip is perpendicular to the part. Does that make any sense?

I tend to clip in huge loops of hair because once I remove the clips, SOTC, etc. my hair falls a bit. I prefer a lot of volume up top.
Sort of CG sometimes, but not really
2B, medium? normal porosity and elasticity?

    Cleansers -
Suave Clarifying, Philosophy Happy Birthday Beautiful

Stylers - BRHG, re:coil, Ion Hairspray

I live in the NYC area.
