Herbal Essences gels

three quick questions:

1) Which of the three gels (Totally Twisted, Set Me Up, Body Envy) has the most hold?

2) Are all three CG?

3) Does the Body Envy actually noticeably give the hair more body, or is that just the name? Because my hair doesn't need any more body.

Thanks!

In my hair Body Envy has more hold. I don't get more body but it is slightly curl enhancing for me.
    All three are CG

I would say body envy has the most hold but set me up is very similar and is named that because it's supposed to be a strong hold gel. I wouldnt say body envy gives my hair any extra volume but it helps with frizz and curl definition.

Body Envy and Set Me Up are very similar in my hair. They both give me nice springy curls but I wouldn't say either one gives me noticeably increased volume or body. (My hair already has enough of both.)

Is there a difference with body envy gel and the mousse??
I have SMU gel and I used it this morning but I didn't get much hold - BUT, I also added some tizz no frizz gel - could that have been the culprit?
I would really like to get bouncy fluffy curls. Not clumped.

So I have been using the Body Envy and I really do like it but I dont think that either that or the Set Me Up have quite enough hold for me. I have been getting frizz. So yesterday I got the Set Me Up hairspray and it used it on my damp hair after putting in the gel and getting it the way I like it, all crunch came out very easily after it was dry. And i think it might have done the trick. Much less of the spidery frizz that I had been getting. So just a suggestion if you arnt getting enough hold from the gel.

Alcohol Denat., Water, Acrylates Copolymer, Bambusa Vulgaris Leaf/Stem Extract, Cereus Grandiflorus Flower Extract (Cactus), Fragrance, Propylene Glycol, Aminomethyl Propanol, Triethyl Citrate, PEG 12 Dimethicone, Panthenol

Darby, try again without the Tizz. SMU by itself gives me the kind of curls you describe.

Okay I just got questioned about this on another forum...does the "peg-12" in front of the dimethicone (3rd from the end on the ingredient list) make it somehow a "non-cone"?

    Thanks!

It's a cone it's a WATER soluble cone is all. The peg in front or sometimes behind some other things does that too. Like caster oil, I see that a bit with a peg to make it water soluble.

Now two of them do have polyquats in them for those that avoid those. The Totally twisted doesn't have Quats, nor protein whew!

I just went through my products to see which were the safest for absolutely no buildup of quat, cone or wax, oh or caster oil either. I had to look up those HE gels on drugstore.com if anyone wanted to look at ingredients there

Just got back in the land of hair products and so far I've tried 2 of the HE gels, the TT and SMU. I tried TT first, and co-washed with Suave Peach & Mango, followed by One C for regular conditioning, then used a tad of Recoil and white Boots underneath. I air-dried the whole way and was honestly less than pleased with the results.
The next time I co-washed with Suave Mixed Berry Smoothie condish, conditioned with Elucence, then without realizing it, I used a non-CG styling creme (Fructis Soft Curl Creme - confused it with another Fructis product when buying it because I was trying to remember all the drug-store raves while in Target ). So on top of the FSCC, I used the SMU gel, then plopped for 10 minutes and diffused for 5 minutes. I had GREAT hair, but now I don't know if it was the SMU gel, the non-CG FSCC, or the diffusing that caused the difference. I'm on day 3 now and I still don't need to wash because it looks fine. But I am sad about the FSCC and the cone. :(

I've also got the Body Envy gel to try on my next round of washing, so I'm anxious to see how that works. I actually bought the mousse too because I couldn't help myself. :P But I need to figure out which of the gels works best so I know which to stock up on! So far the TT is not one of them though.

I see I'm not the only one trying all sorts of different things to see what works! This morning I used SMU and had terrible results. Just greasy looking hair. I ended up just using tizz no frizz by itself and got kind of decent hair but I'm sure not enough hold but I had to leave for work.
My question is.... how much different is the body envy gel from SMU???
I've tried the body envy mousse and didn't like it. again it left my hair greasy looking.

The Body Envy is better in my hair that SMU.
Now in the summer Body Envy gave me some super crispy impossible to scrunch out hair but now that it's winter and I"m using heavier conditioners it's just perfect.
I still think though it's not as much hold as BRHG or Dep sports gel but my curls look nicer with BE, more natural

I find Body Envy to be very similar to SMU, but some prefer BE.

What specifically do you mean that your hair came out greasy looking? Do you mean that it clumped together in small tight clumps? (which is what it does in my hair, but I like that because I get good definition without frizz.) Or do you mean it was literally greasy?

I'm just wondering because maybe you are looking for your hair to be different than I would like mine to be, so I could get a better idea on what to suggest.

yes, clumped in small tight clumps and looked very shiney or wet looking. Now if I had thick hair, this would look good but I have VERY fine, thin hair and it looks ultra thin when it does this.
so, I guess you could say I'm getting good definition but I need a more fluffy. big curl look.

Ah! That makes things much clearer. In that case, I don't think Body Envy would give you the kind of result you would like. For most people, it didn't seem to increase volume, which is what you need. Totally Twisted might be a better choice for you. It's not specifically volumizing, but it has a softer hold, so you would not get those tight little clumps.

Darby, I just looked at your pics and didn't think your hair looked too thin or fine at all. What were you using in your hair for those two pics in which you were wearing the blue denim shirt?
  • lushaholiclushaholic Posts: 2,180Registered Users
The PJ in me couldn't resist washing and trying the BE gel today, and besides as mentioned in another thread, I needed to try and detangle with conditioner, so it was the perfect chance. I tried TT mousse underneath, which is the first time I've bought or tried mousse in at least a couple of years since they usually don't work for me. And to try and give myself a clearer picture of how the products work, I went cold turkey and left out any of my faithful standby's, using just the TT mousse and BE gel. I diffused for about 5 mins after plopping for 15, and while my hair is still very damp, it looks very good so far. I'll have to see how it looks completely dry or on the 2nd day to really tell though.

This answers my question on the other link. Well BE TT, heck if one of them in that lineup works you'll be doing good price wise.
I got SMU mousse. I used it alone, I'm the mousse impaired. I can only get one mousse to work for me and even then I get some skinny curls.

If it works good for you, ya know you have to post pics right? but no pressure

Hey, Darby, I forget if you've mentioned your results with cream stylers? If I want big soft clumps, I head for a cream.

That was in the summer and I just used my salon care gel. But now in the winter, the salon care gel is giving me a tight defined curl pattern. Making the sides look extremely thin.

The only cream ones I have tried was bumble and bumble and at first it worked great then it became heavy and then it dried my hair out.
the other one was.... recoil - hated it. And I've tried the garnier line - UGH on those too. those went into the trash real fast.
I'd be up for trying a cream! But which one?? I haven't looked or researched any creams since my gel was working so well during the summer months.

My favorite cream is Boots, but it can make your hair a bit producty if you overdo it. Great for clumping, though.

A drugstore one to try might be L'Oreal Out of Bed, which has developed quite a following here lately. Another might be Dove Molding Cream. With either one I would go easy and use a very small amount.

Garnier Fructis Soft Curl Cream has many fans, but is not entirely CG -- it has dimethicone. Samy Smooth reaction also has one cone, but is a decent cream.

Hmm, well I'm not sure which one made my hair feel rough, but my guess is the mousse. I got really skinny curls today until I flipped my head over and started fluffing up my roots and length galore, then it just looked really fully. I guess I will have to try the BE gel on it's own, but if I were going by the results of today, then so far I would vote the SMU as my favorite of the three. But of course the pj in me will give the BE another fair trial before deciding. :P And MH, I don't have a camera here, so no pics. :( My hair looked really good damp though and then again after shaking out the crunchies, but not as good as the results with the SMU and soft curls cream.

Okay, so last night I showered, left in all of my V05 freesia condish, and plopped overnight. Woke up, fixed weird shaped curls with some water, and used a small amount of Body Envy. I have great hair right now! It's a little frizzy, but that's probably because I didn't use enough for my hair. The gel seemed to make the back of my hair curlier, though, something I have never achieved with mousse. I also really like the smell. *crossing my fingers for this to be my HG* :P

Got good results today using TT. I washed with Nature's gate poo and condished with aussie 3mm. Added a small amount of TT and diffused dry. When about 85% dry, I sprayed a small amount of my scrunch spray by Beyond the zone and diffused a tad bit more and got the curl I wanted :)
so, maybe.... the TT is going to work for me!!!
The body envy and SMU didn't.
