Ok I am confused now. Ugh seriously this is annoying. Anyway so is it better for the dew number to be lower? I'm really trying to wrap my head around this but now I'm confused again. Today mine is 36 but Elle you are jealous of a 41 and some how I got it in my head that 50-60 is best. If you know a link that I can read that would be great. No me gusta confusion!!!

For me personally, a dew of around 40-55 is best. After 55, there is too much moisture in the air for my hair. For some products high in glycerin (like, second ingredient), 50 is teetering on too high. Think of it like a bell curve - super low dews (less than 30), are usually ick, then it gets better, then after 55-60 the benefit starts to go down again and it turns icky.

+1. I don't think I really have to worry about dew pts where I live, but I was confused too. I have a hard time with winters, cause they're so cold and it rains alot here. That was broken down nicely and I have done a super search to no avail.

I must also say that your blog is the same way, down to earth, no mumbo jumbo to get through to get to the bottom line. But I don't bake, sorry. I make some bomb ass egg nog cookies, but can't now its out of season. Maybe an edible bouquet or something......

And the whole SM thing makes since. I can feel the serious buildup, cause I only poo every couple of weeks. But I have a dull, almost sticky cast on my hair and it's tangling up alot. I guess I need to clarify and back off on using it, or poo more often. Damn, it was keeping me soooooo soft:mad:. Back to the drawing board.........

    Bwhahaha Edible Arrangements are delicious....

Thank you for the compliment though. My thing is, I HATE reading science jargon and yadda yadda yadda and blaaaaaahhhh when all of it can really be summed up in a few sentences. I have a short attention span and I also don't feel like writing 1,000 word posts or doing 30 minute vids when I could have said it in 8 minutes.

SM is great, but they use a lot of oils and I find their stuff coating, esp if you do your hair often. The old Smoothie used to cause build up in my hair if I only used it once. I had to shampoo it out every time!

    I second that.

We need a spot where someone (Elle? Hee hee) only talks about hair care and products. I like CurlyNikki's blog, and do enjoy reading about other topics, but I need someone to just talk about hair and products only. Not just "this works for my hair", but why? How? What are the ingredients and how do they work together? A lot of the time, a "no" for Elle is a "yes" for me and vice versa because our hair is different, but also I know by her description if a product will work for me even if it doesn't work for her.

I don't care about curl definition and popping my curls, I just care about moisture/protein balance, slip, season/weather/dew point friendly products, cost and lastly smell.

The weatherbug app is cool! And its better than the weather thing that came with my phone. Can't I just stay away from glyerine period? I know when the dew point is right, glyerine is on point but there is such a small range

You definitely can, but I know for me with my low porosity hair, humectants are delicious in the right dews.

Yeah, I'm lo-po and fine, and keep treating my hair like it has to be sealed with heavy butters and re moisturized with a thicky daily. I just need to change my mental and start styling based on hair properties, not just going with what I think a 4 should need. I'm tryng to get to the point where I only style once a week. I need a good initial-after wash-very moisturizing-moisturizer/leave-in. I can't remember what blog I saw it on, maybe CN, but it said to maybe do a steam or low heat after you have put your leave in and moisturizer on to help it absorb. Imma try it:glasses2:

Plus its difficult to stay away from glycerin or all humectants. I have a hard enough time doing that in the winter...

Yeah, I prob wouldn't be able to avoid all the humectants... Aw ok... I'll just have to start checking the dew point. Thanks!

Your dog's name is Bacardi...I LOVE IT. LMAO.

What can I say, I love the sauce...
And (sorry to keep double posting) I think I'll just suck it up and get a leave-in off the ground. It seems like the only products that ever work on my hair don't involve drugstores. Well, unless it's Garnier...

Edit: Okay, so I'm looking at two different leave-ins that seem promising on curlmart: Curl Junkie BeautiCurls Leave In and Darcy's Botanicals Vanilla Delight leave In. From what I can tell neither of them have anything that would bother me in certain dew points and they contain shea butter, which my hair loves. Does anyone have one they favor over the other, or do they both suck? :confused1:

Doesn't the Vanilla Delight have glycerin? I'd go with the CJ. I like that one. However, even though it has butters, it seems very light, so if you like heavier leave ins it might not be the best one for you. You could get the Rehab and leave that in - it's GREAT and super moisturizing. It really nourishes my ends. Shea butter is high up on the list too.

Oh, I didn't see any glycerin listed...must've missed it. Dumb. But I'll definitely look into the rehab because my hair really likes heavy products. Thanks again :D

Not usually, because my hair is low porosity and there are oils in my leave ins.

Wait a sec.. do you mean Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Conditioning Milk ?

Cause if so.. yeah it does contain humectants: Capryly Glycol is a humectant that's in there.. Isopropyl Myristate has humectant properties... that's in there. It contains Sobitol Esters..another ingredient with humectant properties..it's in there. It contains sugar starch (whatever the hell that is) but sugar has humectant properties.

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Hold Smoothie contains humectants as well.

Since this is an ask Elle thread, I shall ask!
In the winter, I never have acne, summer hits and I have little stupid bumps around my chin n whatnot. Question is, do u use anything specifically to keep ur skin clear n the summer? I looked at ur dew pt video and I saw how pretty ur skin is :)
Of course I'll take advice from everyone :)
    Thanks!

Also, isn't fote aloe vera gel a humectant? I used it during the winter mixed with some oils and I fell in love. I'd wet my hair in the shower, apply while wet and make a puff at the top. My hair would be soft for two days. Now, it doesn't do anything for my hair at all :( BTW I live in alabama and Idk about dew point but its hot as 3 fat chicks n a compact car down here!

This is NOT an ask Elle thread!!! No no no.

But to answer your question, I personally keep oil to a minimum on my face and try to use as little makeup as possible so I don't clog my pores.

AV is a humectant but it's not as "strong" as glycerin. I use it all year around, in all dews, and have never had issues. However, you might need something with more moisture if it's super hot.

@kdelish, I'm glad you like it. A lot of women on this site LOVE the original SM leave-in. I wonder if we ever got an answer as to whether they are really discontinuing it? I hope not.
