CurlTalk

Bit of a silly question

I am overdue for a haircut, so I am going to book one pretty soon. However, I have a weird dilemma. I wear glasses, and my vision is seriously impaired without them. Whenever I go to get my hair cut, the hairdresser asks that I remove my glasses so they don't get in the way. This is normally fine with me, but the last haircut I had was with a new lady, and during the haircut she asked me if I had had my hair cut with a razor, because apparently that's what it looked like.

That's when it struck me that I had no idea. I can't see what hairdressers are doing with my hair as they cut it, so I really don't know if I've ever had my hair razor-cut before.

I'm going to have my hair cut by my regular gal again (the one who apparently used a razor? But I'm not sure). How do I tell her not to use a razor on my hair? Do I just ask if she has ever used one on me, and then ask that she not use it any more if she has? I guess I'm just not sure how to bring it up without sounding unnecessarily whiny. :tongue7:

You could try politely saying, "The last time you cut my hair was a razor used at all?". If she said that did use one you can just say "I don't think it worked well with my hair so can you just regular scissors this time?". I think as long as you're polite and friendly it should be fine. It IS your hair after all!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed! It's YOUR hair. If you don't want a razor used on it, then she shouldn't, it is her job to satisfy you.

+1. While you're at it, make sure she isn't using thinning shears, either. You could even tell a white lie and say, "Did you use a razor or thinning shears on me the last time? I can't remember." If she says yes to either, do as hippiechic suggests. I've had to do the same thing, and it was fine. Sometimes I just say, "My hair didn't like that," or "That made my hair unhappy". Yes, I would sound like a crackpot to someone else, but a good stylist knows how capricious and sulky hair can be. :)

I continued going to my regular stylist for a couple of cuts after I went CG. I told her that I had been reading a lot about how thinning shears and razors interfered with the natural curl pattern of my hair and that I wanted to not use them anymore. She told me that my hair would be bulky, and I said I was okay with that. She just shrugged and did what I asked. Your stylist may question you a little, because razors and thinning shears are probably the only way she knows to control curly/wavy hair. But she'll do what you ask if you persist.
(Sidebar - she was right about the bulk. I've had 2 Deva cuts since then, at another salon, and my hair is a ton better. You might want to consider a curly/wavy cut at some point.)

BTW, the feel of a razor being used on your hair is very distinct. They hold the razor against a chunk of hair toward the root, and scrape it down toward the end. As it goes, it cuts strands at all different lengths. It makes kind of tearing sound. (Describing it now, I can't believe I ever thought it wad good for my hair!)

Yes, I think you'd probably definitely know if she used a razor on you...that "tearing" sound makes me cringe!
