Okra Gel? Who's gone crazy?

pedahehpedaheh Posts: 4,812Registered Users
After seeing a post on Botticelli Babe's new Okra gel, I bought me some frozen okra. My plan is to boil Okra in water, and then thicken it with corn starch. Is Okra the new flax?
By the way, I believe that being willing to put Okra goo in my hair is a sign that I drank ALL the CG cool-ade.
I'll update when I actually try it.

 Lush makes an Okra conditioner, it is quite nice as a cream rinse and it has good slip.

Fresh okra might give more mucilage than the frozen, I think.

I think that is probably true. But I'm from North Dakota and I don't think I've ever seen fresh okra around. The recipe I found called for fresh and mallow root. I don't have either, but we'll see what happens. Could be a mess.

Having eaten frozen okra (cooked in a "soup") I think you may not need to thicken it much (unless you want to). Stringy, slimy, stinky. But good in vegetable soup.
I would guess it an attempt to offer a "new" product with a different source of mucilage. New products tempt customers to buy stuff.

Now I could whip up a batch of EPS (extracellular polysaccharide) which soil bacteria (the kind they inoculate beans with - proving that I am not only from an agricultural state, but I know some of the history of farming practices woo HOO!), exudes the stickiest, most slimy, adherent goo you ever saw in your life.
THAT would be a novel experience. Thank goodness I have no plans to do that. It IS the goo that holds soil together, though. Important stuff, that. And worm slime.

Sorry gang, welcome to my world!

Okay, I had to do a little search myself. I did find a recipe that must be the one. More interesting, I found a shescentit: Okra Hair Repair Reconstructor Most of the information about okra talks about it as a hair growth support.

I'll have to remember the okra product when the new shescentit products come out and I make a purchase.

Here is the recipe I found. 3/4 of the way down the page.
    The life of a Mixtress
Looks like it goes bad pretty fast even with preservatives. But you can freeze it.

Come on IAgirl. I know you want to try soil bacteria gel and worm goo gel. You know you wanna.

It will be a few days before I try this. I'm going to try the tresemme cowash first.

Okra must be out of season. I went to two vegetable stores that have pretty much everything--and no okra. May have to decide if I'm going to try the frozen.

I love okra to eat, but it seems like if you used the okra goo in your hair it would dry white, not clear...and sort of rough?

    Please do post results!

Okra is one of the few things that will grow in the summer in FL. Yum.

TBH, before NC.com, I would have thought this was pretty gross and would have raised an eyebrow or two at you all. LOL
But now I think I need to find me some okra! LOL.
If it works better than FSG, I may have to invest in some preservative from somewhere. 'Cause IDT I would want to cook some up every couple of days!

Who are you kidding??? You could say that you had success with a mixture of kerosene and potting soil and I'd wanna try it. The refrigerator and going bad part is the only downside for me. I am paring down products and trying to find as much as I can on the ground for added ease and simplicity.

Ok so after seeing BB's mudd I went research quest and found out Okra helps hair growth and all sorts of lovely stuff. I did find this old thread here thought you guys might be interested in reading it

    http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/general-discussion-about-curly-hair/85685-new-gel-idea.html

It was posted about an idea of mixing it with the FSG, and that it has more hold than the FSG. If I had me some okra right now I would so be in the kitchen!

Let is know if any one tries it out.

    I liked that conditioner.

I wonder if the same preservatives used for FSG would work for Okra gel. I also wonder if you could simply add the okra oil to existing FSG.

Interesting stuff. Wonder if I can even get okra up here.

So, I'm sitting her with half dry hair with okra gel on it. It is a fail, but that may be because of the cornstarch and not the okra itself. Malformed frizzy clumps. There was frizz there when I took my hair out of the plop. The clumps were formed frizzy. I actually put FSG on half my head and okra gel on the other half, so I know the cause is something in the okra gel.
I may try again tomorrow with an okra gel without cornstarch. My plan is to boil it down to thicken it. Then again, I may just call this a fail and call it a day.

    What I did:
I have a small measuring pot (3 inches wide). I added 1/2 c distilled water and then added enough okra to reach water level. I brought the pot to a boil and boiled 5 minutes. I let the okra cool in the pot. I strained with a tea strainer, pressing lightly with a spoon. Then I mixed 1 tsp water with 1 tsp cornstarch and returned to a boil. The consistency way similar to FSG at this point.
The consistency before adding corn starch is hard to describe. Gooey water?? Thin for sure. It looked like a similar consistency to what a woman on youtube got when she made okra gel.
The smell is vegetal with some cayenne pepper smell mixed in. I'm guessing that is what okra normally smells like. It is one vegetable that I've never really cooked with before. I normally don't scent things, but I would probably try scenting this. It isn't bad, but isn't good either. Doesn't smell like hair products for sure.

So after it dried, the frizz was only in a few sections. I'm guessing these sections needed more okra gel. I applied the okra gel in the same way I do FSG. My guess is that you need to use more okra gel. The clumps on the FSG side were more defined. The okra side was more fluffy, but in a uncontrolled way. All in all, the results seem quite similar. But I didn't like the look of the hair with okra gel as well. Also, the smell of the okra gel is weird, especially in the morning. My hair retained some of the smell of the Okra gel. I got a whiff as I was sleeping last night. My hair usually doesn't retain scents.
I refreshed with FSG and Okra gel this morning. I'll report back anything new.

Thanks to pedaheh, I found frozen okra at Walmart--$1.50 for a pound. When I got home, I put 1/2 cup in a 2 c Pyrex measuring cup and filled it with water from the InstaHot up to 1 cup. After it defrosted, I put it in the microwave for two 1 minute sessions. I strained it. It was a thin gel. I put in some Hydroethylcellulose, Calcium Chloride, Coconut Oil and two drops of Tinisan. In the meantime, I filled the measuring cup with the okra. It was EASY.

I decided to take the unadulterated okra gel that was in the measuring cup and use it for my first try. I did my FSG HG--shescent it Coco Creme and Komaza Coconut Pudding. My hair looks okay. The curls are fine, it's a little flat on top, more frizz then usual--and incredibly soft.

All of my reading said that okra is really good for hair and scalp. I will definitely play around with this a little more. Might use the one with thickener and ingredients tomorrow. This was so easy. MUCH simpler then FSG. It may be a good base to try adding to FSG, who knows??

Thought I should bump this thread because of all the interest in BB's Mudd. I did make a second batch of okra gel, mixed it up and put it in the freezer in my usual 4 oz portions.

The second time around, I did 1/2 c okra, 1 t of marshmallow and 1 cup of water. I boiled it and strained. I tried to see if it would make more gel, so I added water and kept boiling it and straining it. I did it a few times. It made a lot of gel. For every cup of gel, I added 1 t magnesium chloride, 1/2 t honeyquat, 1 t hydroethylcellulose, a few drops of EO for fragrance and 1/4 t of Vit E. I put in a few drops of preservative.

The "natural" okra gel has an "earthy" scent. I didn't think it was great the first time I used it. It spoiled very quickly, even with some preservative in it. I got a pm asking me if I had the Mudd, which reminded me that I should try it again. I defrosted some and added a few more drops of preservative to see if it would last longer.

Yesterday, I tried it again. I used MD Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie as my leave in and a lot of the okra gel. I think I scrunched it out a little prematurely and caused some frizz. Overall, my hair looked really good (there was a little more frizz then usual.) The curls were tight, volume was good and it felt like I didn't have any product in it! It stayed nicely all day--and looked even better when I was ready to go to sleep last night. Our dewpoints were in the high 60's and the weather guy said it was oppressive yesterday. I think that speaks pretty highly of this stuff.

There's a lot to say for this stuff. It's MUCH easier to make then FSG. Just as cheap (of course, you have to find okra.) Straining isn't difficult at all. The biggest issue is that you really have to use preservative with it. I just don't think it will last--even in the refrigerator.
