Dr. Seuss is still a favorite Children's Author of mine

The giving tree was a bit morbid and I read that at the dentist's office last year... I think a mature child in at least 5th grade might be able to understand the underlying concept of selfishness, but it was so heavy-handed that I wouldn't want a pre-schooler-3rd grader to read it, it's quite depressing and one of those books where the child might get upset even though there's no 'scary-stuff' and it's marketted as a book for young readers but it was too wierd.

Island of the Blue Dolphins, all of the Ramona books, Indian Captive, The Royal Diaries (my favorite being Cleopatra VII), Road To Avonlea, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry (and its sequel), most of the Laura Ingalls books, The Magic Attic Club, Number The Stars (I read this one at least 5 times), and plenty of others I can't remember at the moment.

These books were mostly in elementary school, though I have re-read a couple of them, because I remembered how much I liked them. :)

My little sister and I (shes 10 and Im 14) have loved that book since my mom got it for us when we werent even in Kindergarten yet. I always looked at it as an uplifting story about unconditional love.
