My hair is too soft. D=

curlywhocurlywho Posts: 119Registered Users
I've tried clarifying, using protein, & switching conditioners. Nothing has worked.

I currently use (Every 2-3 days)
Deva low-poo
Suave Coconut cowash
Tresseme Naturals rinse out
No leave in
Curls in a Bottle
anGel
Diffuse dry

I'm at a loss of what to do. My hair won't stay braided or in a ponytail very well and looks pretty limp now.

Sounds like you need a protein treatment, or a clarifying wash to get rid of buildup.

Maybe co-washing is something you need to put on hold for a bit? Since it's getting warmer out, you might not need quite as much moisture.

Ooh, ooh, I get hair that is "too soft" also!!! Slides right out of braids, I have to be careful or I slip right off my pillow and on the the floor. (Kidding).
Could be you've overconditioned. But given the products you've used I'd also say you've probably got conditioner build-up. Not to worry. Conditioners are meant to leave behind a layer of conditioner or they wouldn't help with slip and softness.
A clarifying wash might be a good idea. If you have softened water, that will add to the "too soft feeling." Sulfate poo, even diluted can work well. But for bad conditioner build-up I have to use a little shampoo and baking soda mixed in my hand and I use the abrasion of the BS to help clean. Sounds harsh, but I also use baking soda toothpaste and it doesn't hurt my gums so I'm not worried.
Protein (straight protein as in a gelatin treatment, Nexus emergencee and I know I misspelled that) might help add some support and muscle to your hair. Those creamy, conditioner-y protein products will probably not be of use to you.

    Thanks!
I have a protein treatment on my hair right now. I hope it works, otherwise this atrocious smell would not be worth it, haha.

Atrocious smell? Then it must be Aphogee 2-step! That's hard-core, all right.

It was. I kept it on until my hair was completely hard and then left a conditioner on for about ten minutes, but still nothing. I think I could have even gone without the conditioner and nothing would happen.
It's like my hair only wants to be soft.

Soft hair is not a curse... except on windy days when you need a braid!

Try a "clarifying wash." See if that helps the slippery-ness a bit. Also, try going without conditioner (especially if you cowash!).
Hair can get "conditioner build-up" that leaves it slick like Teflon-coated skillets.

If you have softened water, that may be making your hair feel extra soft and slippery.

There are some people who find the don't need much conditioner at all and need lots of protein. It is possible you are one of them.

I only used a pea-sized amount (total) of conditioner today and my hair was still pretty soft (and extremely frizzy, haha!) That may have just been the humidity, though. I'm beginning to think my Summer hair may just be soft, which will drive me crazy, but It'll still be better than the frizzy mess I usually have.

When I first started with CG, I used Suave conditioner for cowash and had this problem. 2s are usually easily overconditioned. Takes awhile to "learn" your hair and get a good routine and feel for how much product to use. Took me several months before I started really loving mine and knowing what it liked. Some people don't seem to take so long, but my hair was pretty damaged and I had 2 hideous haircuts by "CG stylists" that needed to grow out also.
