I've used both. UFD curly magic dries soft with a medium hold. It's not too hard unless you use too much product. The scent is pretty light and blends well with other products I've used it with Hawaiian Silky 14 in 1, knot today, and shea moisture curl smoothie and hair milk. The last two may dry flaky so be careful with the amount of gel you use. I've only used DM once thus far. I just got it this week. I may have used too much because it dried and left my hair crunchy. I used it with knot today and my roots were a bit flaky. I plan on using it later with DM conditioner or hemp buttermilk though. The difference with these is that DM has a much stronger hold, so if your curls are hard to define it will probably be the better product. It's also cheaper. The smell of DM isn't too pleasant to me, it smells like a light perfumy hair product and not vanilla scented like the butter-creme. The smell can be covered up though since you'll need to moisturize it after it dries. I hope that helps. :hiding:

yes, it did! Thanks a lot! I May end up getting the DM once I take out my braids but I was just wondering since UF's said, on the bottle, that they can define type 4c, 4z.

I have both, but more recently, have been using the UFD, because the DM has glycerin in it, and I get dry with glycerin in low dews. I second everything Moosegirl said except I find UFD doesn't play too nicely with alot of leave creamy leave ins on my hair. Maybe it is my technique....I will be revisiting DM since the weather is breaking here in New York now. Moosegirl, how do you work that UFD with those creamy leave ins? I find that it curdles up, and i get hair boogers! PSbest, please try to post pics of your results!

With the creamy leave ins I have to wait until they've fully absorbed into my hair. I also try not to use too much. That normally means my hair is only damp instead of fully wet when I use UFD.

If u use a product with glycerin using it directly before getting in the shower it'll absorb the moisture from the shower which will prevent drying...
    Just a tip!

@Psbest, I like the curl definition and hair color in your Twitpic! If you don't mind my asking, how did you apply DM to your hair (or what tool did you use to get the definition)? Did you do finger combing (i.e. shingling), shower comb, Denman brush?

I have 4b/4c hair, and I'm having difficulty in applying product uniformally in my hair to have a consistent hair style, so I'm wondering if its the technique or the tool that is a problem for me.

@All: How long does the definition from Curly Magic or DM last for you all? I've been trying to do curl definition myself, but it seems to last 1-2 days after; Which is great on one hand, but having to manipulate my hair that often makes me wonder if I am stumping my hair growth, too...

    Thanks!

I have 4b-ish hair, and I find the definition lasts at least 3 days ( i sometimes go for a 4th by making a puff). I moisturize with a hair milk or CJ Coffee Coco Curl Cream light before the shower, shower with a cap on, and come out and scrunch in some oil- castor or jojoba. I actually find that the more moisturized my coils are, the more they clump and define. HTH!
