Wow. 5 months CG... what a difference!

The first picture is almost exactly 5 months ago. And the second one is from today. While my hair wasn't horrible back in October, it definitely wasn't as curly as it is now. I've always had relatively healthy hair - even though I was cleansing w/sulfates, etc.. I was, basically, deep conditioning every day after stripping w/sulfates (which, in hindsight, seems kind of odd  ). But, I think that's what saved my hair from being dry and split. Back then, if I pulled a strand of hair out and slid it through my fingers, I could feel tiny "burrs" on it as I slid my fingers down it. But, now, that feeling is gone.

My hair LOOKS shorter in today's picture. But, in reality, it's longer. It just curls much better, and because of that, it looks shorter. Wow. ...I'm amazed at how persistence, time, care, and better products have enhanced the curls I already had. I didn't know how good they could look! It does look a bit messier, style-wise today. But, the curl is so much better, I don't even care. I'm not messing with it. LOL!

BTW - that October pic was my first attempt at a super-soak. Worked pretty well for the first time. :)

So, for those of you who are struggling in the first months of trying this, hang in there. It gets better if you stick with it. I have to say (again), probably the best move I made was having Live Curly Live Free analyze my hair and do their Curl Wizard thing. WELL worth the minor cost. :)

I can't get over how healthy your hair was to start off with and you still had amazing results! You have stunning curls!! I also want to tell you that I love reading your day-to-day product usage and pics... :)

Do you still use the SSM? I can't remember from your sig.. Do you get similar results now?

Thanks for the inspiration! I just had my one month anniversary... Good days and bad days!

OMGosh, RacerWife, I've never seen before pics of your hair. It's absolutely gorgeous then, too! It doesn't look dry or frizzy at all! You are one lucky curly. But, I absolutely love the after picture! Your curls are so defined! And, I am right there with rj16 about liking your day-to-day product usage in your siggi. If only I could get first day hair that's half as nice as your first pic, I'd be happy. ;) Do you apply your products any special way? Any techniques you like?

Thanks, everyone! I have always been pretty fanatical about my hair - even when I was (unknowingly) harming it with sulfates. So, going CG was just a change of ingredients for me. I already spent tons of time on it. When that older photo was taken, I had been CG for about 2 weeks. And that was probably my best curl day. I struggled like everyone else in the beginning. And I continued to struggle until I knew my hair properties and followed the Curl Wizard suggestions. I can't say ALL my days were bad hair days back then. But, most of them were. I was just as frustrated as some of the super-newbies I've seen here lately. I think that was the reason I felt compelled to make this post. I know what it's like to struggle with products and methods, too. But, I don't mind trying things and re-trying them to see if they work out using a different method or with different product combos.

WnW - I don't really have any, specific, techniques or methods that I use. I don't plop or do the supersoaker method (although I did use it in that before pic). And I don't do dry it halfway and then add KCCC (can't remember the name of that method). Smasters? Is that the one? Or is Smasters method another thing? See... I don't even remember the names because none of those really worked for me.

One thing that made a difference was backing off on using so many products. In the beginning, I was using everything - leave-in conditioner, curl creme, curl enhancer, and gel. That's MUCH too much for my fine hair. Between the fact that it weighs it down and the fact that my work environment adds dirt, I have to use less product than many girls here use or my hair feels gross by midday.

Because of the crud in the air where I work, I really have to cleanse more often than some people do. I use either CJDF or GTTTT 2 or 3 days a week. I figure, at least they're CG. And I do a PT once every 2 weeks or so. I did one yesterday - and that's part of the reason my hair came out so nice today. :) I always get good results the day after a PT.

But, again - the best thing I've done was have the analysis done (Curl Wizard Premium). That's what helped point me in the right direction with products. It's how I found out that my hair loves protein-packed products. And now I'm not afraid to use them. LOL! I actually was in the beginning. No more. CJBSC has to be my absolute favorite conditioner because it's light enough to not weigh down my fine curls, but packed with enough of the protein that my hair loves. So, I get great results with it. Too many products are a no-no. And Deva products are junk (for me). I keep thinking one of them will work for me. Nope. Not one. And, generally speaking, I DON'T co-wash. It does NOTHING for me. The only time I use a conditioner to wash with is when I do a PT. I only use it so I have a vehicle for my baking soda. ;) Other than that, I don't co-wash. There's no point. It just adds weight. I don't need it. Lots of times I just use CJBSC and my styling product(s) or AOHR and my styling product(s). That's IT. Less is more. ;) HTH!

Oh - and one other thing I learned... don't skimp on the products because they cost more. You need what you need. I make sure I get every strand, root to tip, or I get frizz or limp curls. I happen to have a lot of hair. A lot of hair = a lot of product. That's just the way it is. A person with less hair can use less product. I can't.

I apply products upside down when my hair is still dripping wet (I'm still standing in the shower at this point). I don't plop because it does nothing for my curl - at all. The only thing I do is (1) make sure the hair is slathered with product and (2) scrunch it out with my curls like us cloth, and (3) diffuse it on low. I DON'T scrunch it while I'm diffusing - I leave the curls alone until it's 100% dry and then I SOTC if there is any. I didn't get any crunch today with CCCC & CIAB. But, when I use KCCC, I definitely get crunch. I just make sure not to mess with the curls until they're completely dry or it can really mess them up for the rest of the day (BOO! :( ) ...Learned that one the hard way. LOL!

Wow, I can't believe you don't use any special techniques! You must have superwoman hair. :) My hair absolutely loves plopping. I can't have a good curly hair day without it! That, the icequeen method, and pixie diffusing have been pretty good together. But, my hair's freaking out on me lately. :( Nothing's working like it was -- not even my beloved 2nd day hair!
Oh, and yeah, the thing you were describing is the Smasters method! ;)

And you are so right about the lots of hair needs lots of product thing...I learned THAT the hard way! My hair needs to be COATED in product, or else it just looks and feels like there is nothing in it.

Greap pics! Thanks for sharing. I was wondering, if you don't co-wash then what do you wash your hair with, if anything? You might have explained it in your posts but I'm new and don't know what a bunch of the abreviations mean. lol

    Thanks for sharing!

i second everyone else...your hair is lovely before and after-but wow, your curls really did tighten up! and you have so much shine too. i don't think i realized you didn't co-wash. makes me feel better! i keep trying to but you are right, it adds weight, and my curls can't take it. I have done better skipping wash days or water washing or low-pooing. the same with leave-ins.

you make me want to try curl wizard...but i'm afraid they will tell me i have all the wrong stuff...

LOL @ WnW saying I have superwoman hair. I don't think so. But, I have worked hard to get it and keep it healthy. ...And yay! I had Smasters' method correct! ;) I thought that was it. I tried that - didn't work well for me. I got hard, unruly hair from that. I prefer my KCCC be used alone on dripping wet hair. It just works better for me. :)

My membership date is deceiving - maybe most of you probably thought I had been CG longer because I signed up on this board back in '04. But, I think I did that because of a Deva thing that was going on where you had to post your story here when you were done. It was the first time I tried being CG. And I HATED it. My hair was HORRIBLE using all the Deva products. So, it was a long time before I came back and decided to investigate further.

As for what I wash with - Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Invigorating Shampoo (which I buy at my local supermarket) or Curl Junkie Daily Fix. Those are my 2 cleansers. I don't have a clue whether you'd call them no-poos or low-poos or whatever. But, they work nicely and they're CG - and that's all that matters to me. GTTTT was recommended to me by the Curl Wizard analysis because of my hair's protein needs. And it was right on the money. It "feels" to me like I'm washing my hair. But, there's no sulfates in it or excess emollients in it to weigh my hair down or over-moisturize it - it almost feels clarifying to me, minus the harsh sulfates. The Curl Junkie cleanser works great for me in between when I don't feel the need for a more clarifying cleanse. And I trust CJ products 100% - Marsha recommended this cleanser to me, personally, after talking with me a bit about my hair and my needs and wishes. And, as usual, she was correct.

Ohhh! Don't be afraid! Be happy that you'll find what really works for you! I found that I had a mixture of products - some good; some bad. I just added one at a time until I was comfortable with the ones I had. BEST thing I did along the CG route.

And leave-ins haven't worked well for me almost all winter, aside from a day or two here or there. So, I skip the leave-in almost all the time. The only thing I have in my hair on any normal day is one or maybe two styling products (either a gel or a curl enhancer and a gel - or like today, a curl creme and a gel).

Thank you for taking the time to explain! I've sent off for my curl analysis and can't wait to get the results because although I am finding that the stuff I have read to do doesn't really work well for me, such as LI conditioner. Makes my hair stringy limp and frizzy all at once.

Wow! I just had to join in to say your hair is just gorgeous! Like the others, I had thought that you had been CG for awhile because of your join date. It's so inspiring to see what a difference five months can make!

I'm just starting my third month of going CG, and it feels like every day is still a struggle in terms of figuring out what works for my hair! Getting the Curl Wizard analysis done really did help!

Wow, I thought you'd been at it longer too, based on all the good advice you dole out! It's been so helpful to me as I've tried to figure all this out.

But I have to agree with everyone else--your before pic is great! For most of us, that would be the "after"!

Thanks for the encouragement--it's so helpful to me, as I am one of those frustrated people you refer to.
