Applying Leave-in

Just recently I started using GF C&S Leave-in. Although I think my hair likes it (and it makes it easier to detangle before cowashing), I'm having trouble distributing it evenly throughout my hair.

Most days my hair is 2b-ish, but it can reach 3a on the best hair days. However, my curl/wave pattern (especially on the canopy) is easily stretched out to the point of being almost completely straight. When applying gels/mousse, etc. I have to scrunch it all in, or what little curl I have and most of the wave dissappears. However, for some unknown reason I can't distribute the leave in by scrunching. I tried racking (sp?) the Leave-in this morning, and although I got some of the canopy to recurl wirh loads of gel, the majority of it barely had any wave at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions about applying this differently?

I apply my leave-in to dripping wet hair. I rake it through, but my hair is so wet that it reclumps and curls when I scrunch it.
