Need Hair Accessory Tips for Wearing It Up

I've posted something similar to this in the past and got some good tips about how to wear a "messy ponytail". That's a great look for running out to the store, but I like to look more put-together when I go out for dinner, etc. I wonder if anyone has any tips about specific hair accessories for putting up long, thick, heavy, curly hair. The claw clips no longer work, unless you know a specific brand or place to get ones that are made for heavy hair. A ponytail holder doesn't work because within hours the ponytail has drifted down to the bottom of my neck. I really want to be able to put it up because (a) it gets bothersome at times when it is down, and (b) my bf just recently told me that he likes my hair when it is up. (and yes, I aim to please!)

TIA

Tina

Have you ever tried an Octopus clip? They rock! I've never had a clip be so sturdy and feel so comfortable. This is the first clip that I've not broken. Here's a pic, but you can't see much of the clip.

Thanks for the tip about the octopus clip. I love how it looks in your hair because the curls aren't all smashed inside the clip. I wonder where to find a clip like this and how to put it into my hair?

Celebration - I have a special occasion coming up Saturday and am looking for a way to wear my hair up too.

    Please help us.

Ab-star could you give us more details on your clip?

    Thanks.

I love Octopus Clips. I have 2 at home. They are are the perfect size and width to grip all of my hair on the back of my head when I want to wear it up.

DominicanaHeat - thanks for the pic. I don't think I've ever seen one.
Hope I can find one quickly.

I think I got mine at either Wal-Mart or Walgreens. It is pretty much like the one in the picture posted. Basically all I do is pull it back, give it a little twist, open the clip up wide and clip it. Super easy and very comfortable. I like the way it lets my curls hang out through the openings.

(I'm so stoked....just tonight I found my long lost original MIA Octopus clip...under my bed!! :D)

I gotta get me one of those octopus clips!!!

Here's something I like to do: use those clip on hair pieces! I have a few but haven't been wearing them cuz they're not curly. I was at the mall the other day and found the perfect curly piece that matched my hair color exactly - I'm going back to get it!

Thanks for the picture! I have seen clips like those but they looked so small. Maybe they pack more power than I thought they did. It's certainly worth a try! Also thanks for explaining how you got your hair up in it, and congrats on finding your lost clip---maybe talking about it helped. LOL
I love those clip on hair thingies. If I had shorter hair, I would definitely think about getting one, too! I hope you love yours!
Bostonswaves-let me know if you find one of these clips. I'd like to know what you think.

I use one of these -- the Flexi-8. Someone here posted about it, I don't remember who. This really grips my hair well but is still comfortable. Also, it comes in different sizes so you can get a larger one for your thick hair.

Wow, Suzen, that Flexi8 looks awesome. This is definitely on my list of things to get now. I'm excited. Thank you!

Suzen - that looks cool too. I think they should have used a curly person in the "tails up" video. I bet it looks really cute with curls hanging down.

I'm going to Sally today and maybe I can pick up both. I already picked up some pearl scrunchiesthat may work ok.

Thanks - you guys are the best.

Yeah the one for thick hair is the one to get. Those are pretty big...about what? 2.5 - 3 inches wide? more than enough to clip around the twist :)

The flexi-8 is nice! Very beautiful too, I need to start fiddling with other hair accessories too as it gets colder and I can't wash my hair as often.

Flexi-8 also has the advantage of being comfortable on your head, since it flexes (hence the name!). And the stick is permanently attached so you don't lose it. I wish I could remember what NCer originally recommended it to me!

Ab-star, I was going to recommend the same clip!! I love it. I use it a couple of times a week because I always get compliments on my hair up just like you show. It's an easy style, and if I'm not quite happy with the way my curls look down, they still look great in a clip.

I can't wait until my hair is long enough to use one of those! It's about shoulder length-let's hope the hair vitamins kick in soon!

I bought an octopus clip while at Walgreen's last night. Not sure how well it's going to hold up because a) it is that awful (i think) Scunci brand, and b) it did not say that it was for thick hair. However, I tried it out today and it is holding my hair up quite comfortably. One thing I noticed is that with my ends sticking out, they look awfully dry... Guess it's time to go searching for a DT.....or go in for a trim.

I have long, thick hair myself. I am a huge fan of quality sticks and forks. The cheapie ones from Claire's, etc., are just going to snap.
    3a/b, fine, lots of it
