Porous and Fine: Share your Hair Biography

pedahehpedaheh Posts: 4,812Registered Users
This thread is for Porous and Fine wavies and curlies to share information about their hair and hopefully learn from each other. I've posted the template and you can copy and paste it in to your reply to fill it out. When you have things to add or change you can just edit your post. The intention of these threads is for everyone to share their knowledge about their hair, even you don't know everything about it yet. I would expect most people to leave at least some questions blank. When you know more, you can come back and update your post.

If you are porous and coarse, post to this thread.

    Curl Pattern: 2b
    Density: thin
    Elasticity: low
Characteristics: Never grown past shoulders, hard to weigh down, very easy to straighten, hard to encourage curls, dry

CG/ModCG/not CG: Modified CG I low poo once a week in summer and twice month in winter
Hard water or soft water: Hard
Average climate/dew points: Normal dews in summer, low to very low in winter

    Protein section:
Do you PT? If so how often? If I'm using IAgirl's gelatin PT, I PT every 2 weeks. With other PTs it was once/week.
How long? Up to 1 hour. At least 20 minutes.
PT with heat or steam? Sometimes I sit under a hard hat dryer. When I use the hard hat dryer, I PT for about 20 minutes.
Favorite PTs: IAgirl's gelatin PT (has hydrolized collogen) is my favorite. I also like Ion Effective Hair care.
Favorite products that contain protein? Ecostyler Krystal, small amount of Ion effective care mixed in my rinse out conditioner
Proteins your hair likes? I haven't met a protein my hair doesn't like. My hair especially likes Hydrolized Collogen. It adds strength, elasticity, and shine to my hair.
Proteins your hair dislikes? None yet.

    Moisture section:
Do you DT? If so, how often? I DT after every PT. So, every week or 2 (depending on which PT I'm using).
How long? Usually 5-15 minutes. I will leave it on longer if there are penetrating oils in the DT.
DT with heat or steam? I sometimes sit under my hard hat dryer. It depends on my mood. I'm still experimenting with this.
Favorite DTs: I use some of my rinse out (usually renpure (red one) or GFTN) mixed 50/50 with warm honey
Favorite products to moisturize your hair: Renpure conditioner (red one) or GFTN mixed 50/50 with honey, coconut oil
Ingredient likes: behentrimonium methosulfate, glycerin (normal dews)
Ingredient dislikes: shea butter, jojoba oil, aloe, PEG castor oil, epsom salt
Do you seal? If so, what do you use to seal? I cannot seal. Everything I've tried to seal with causes frizz and makes my hair oily.

Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points?
I avoid glycerin in high and low dew points. I only need to avoid it in things that are left on my hair like styling products and leave-ins. I like glycerin in normal dew points.

    Low dew point combos:
Renpure (red) as leave in, FSG, BRHG
Normal dew point combos: Renpure (red) as leave in, FSG/ecostyler krystal mix, BRHG
High dew point combos: I have no idea what to do in high dews. My hair is a hot mess.
HG/Go-to Products: Coconut oil, honey, BRHG, ecostyler,

Name the methods, techniques, and tricks that work for your porous hair?
Spritz and condish method, overnight coconut oil prewash treatments, mixing honey with conditioner, using a humidifier in winter

    Curl Pattern:
    Mostly 3b, with a little 3c and a teeny bit of 3a.
    Density: medium.
    Elasticity: lnormal to low.
Characteristics: flat top/no root curl (well, very little), loads 'o shrinkage, very little volume (I like to call it 'clumptastic').

CG/ModCG/not CG: CG in general. I shampoo probably once every two weeks. (see below)
Hard water or soft water:: super hard, thus (comparatively) frequent shampooing.
Average climate/dew points: In the winter, 30-45 temp (30-45 dew), in summer 60-85 temp (dew 40-60).

    Protein section:
Do you PT? If so how often? How long? I do, roughly once every week and a half or so, usually for about 15-30 minutes (depending on the PT)
PT with heat or steam? Just in the shower, so with a little steam, I guess.
    Favorite PTs: CJ Curl Fix.
Favorite products that contain protein? Curl Junkie Curl Fix, CCCC, Fuzzy Duck conditioner, MopTop conditioner, CJ Repair Me.
Proteins your hair likes?[/B] Wheat, corn, soy, silk.
Proteins your hair dislikes? It has issues with keratin for some reason.

    Moisture section:
Do you DT? If so, how often? How long? I normally do about once a week on top of when I follow a PT with a DT (works out to about once every 5 or 6 days). Anywhere between five minutes to an hour.
DT with heat or steam? With body heat - I generally wrap my head in saran wrap and leave it there (ideally while I'm doing something that warms me up).
Favorite DTs: Jessicurl Weekly Deep Treatment, CJ Curl Rehab
Favorite products to moisturize your hair: Little outside of my DTs - just general conditioners (in my sig).
Ingredient likes: behentrimonium methosulfate, coconut oil/avocado oil, shea butter, glycerin
Ingredient dislikes: jojoba oil, aloe (low dews)
Do you seal? If so, what do you use to seal? Nope. Hair likes to breathe.

Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points? Not normally, and even then only in stylers. I only avoid aloe, and then only in lower dew points (and again, only in stylers - specifcally gel stylers).

Low dew point combos: Curl Rehab+CCCC+CIAB
    Normal dew point combos:CCCC+CQ
High dew point combos: DBPSC+Crown Pride Lusicious Curl Creme

[/B]HG/Go-to Products: Curl Rehab, Daily Fix, CCCC, DBPSC

Name the methods, techniques, and tricks that work for your porous hair?
Plopping, definitely. Super soaker, sometimes, but generally I prefer to apply product to semi-dry hair. I like spritz-n-condish and then wrapping my head in saran wrap to add heat for DTs.
3b/c. Fine, med-high porosity, normal elasticity. Hair loves oils in summer, protein in winter. Constantly battling the hard water monster.

    Favourites:love5::
CJ Curl Theory, Curl Rehab, Smoothing, Curl Fix, Daily Fix, CCCC, CIAB, CQ, SSCC, MC shampoo, Inecto Pure Coconut Oil, CP luscious curl creme (summer), DB Pumpkin Seed (summer), FD/MT, JCWDT, JCTS

This is so incomplete, I feel really bad posting it. But I figured, why not? I am still learning about my hair and I can always add to it when I learn more.

Curl Pattern: not sure...2b-3a, I think
    Density: medium-thick
    Elasticity: low
Characteristics: can be easily weighed down; very brittle, but not dry; seems to need obscene amount of protein, which I just discovered this month. I kept giving my hair moisture and more moisture, because curly hair needs moisture, right? Not mine, not now at least. I didn't understand how my hair could possibly be still so dry even after all the moisture I was giving it.

CG/ModCG/not CG: I swing between mod CG to not CG, currently not CG
Hard water or soft water: soft water (water softener)
Average climate/dew points: not sure, I live in Wisconsin, if that helps

    Protein section: :love5:
Do you PT? If so how often?
    How long?
    PT with heat or steam?
    Favorite PTs:
Favorite products that contain protein? I try to make sure I have protein in all of my products
Proteins your hair likes? so far, all of them
    Proteins your hair dislikes?

Moisture section: My hair is hating moisture at the moment, so I have backed off from all heavy moisturizing products
Do you DT? If so, how often?
    How long?
    DT with heat or steam?
    Favorite DTs:
Favorite products to moisturize your hair:
    Ingredient likes:
    Ingredient dislikes:
Do you seal? If so, what do you use to seal? still experimenting with this one. So far seems a fail, though in theory sealing should work awesomely for my hair??

Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points? I am trying to avoid humectants, I still need to do some reading up on them about when/if I should be using them. My hair has a tendency to blow up like a puffer fish, I am assuming this is d/t humectant usage, haven't figured out a pattern for that yet.

    Low dew point combos:
    Normal dew point combos:
    High dew point combos:

HG/Go-to Products: GVP K-Pak, Tigi MM(though this one has been shelved for now)

Name the methods, techniques, and tricks that work for your porous hair? Coconut Oil prewash; when I remember, the spritz & condish; plopping; I wash every 2-3 days; ACV rinse

ETA: pedaheh, thanks for organizing this hair bio
    very fine/dense/high porosity
    No heat styling

Doh! I knew I was forgetting something in the intro. I'll go change it now. But you have the exact right idea. The intention of these threads is for everyone to share their knowledge about their hair even if they don't know everything about it yet. I would expect most people to leave at least some questions blank. I did, and I came up with the questions.

How long? 10 mintutes, 1 hour, etc.
Favorite products that contain protein? Mop Top Deep conditioner, Abba Pure Gentle conditioner, Onesta Moisture Balancing Conditioner
Proteins your hair likes? it doesn't like soy protein or too much collagen and keratin. Protein should not be high on the ingredients list

    How long? 10 minutes tops
DT with heat or steam? in the shower

Hard water or soft water: UGH HARD
Average climate/dew points: Varies with the seasons

    Protein section:
Do you PT? If so how often? Yep. My hair eats it for breakfast. Usually at least once a week, though I'm finding that in the heat of summer my hair wants more protein than moisture and it's the OPPOSITE in winter, and it wants more moisture than protein.
How long? anywhere from 20 mins to 2 hours depending on what I'm using.
PT with heat or steam? No but I do put a cap on to trap my body heat
Favorite PTs: SS RPT, CJCF, CJRM

Do you seal? If so, what do you use to seal? Sometimes. Coconut oil, argan oil, camellia oil.

Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points? HECK YA I AVOID THEM! My hair HATES them. Mostly I avoid Glycerin, though I'm trying to get away from Panthenol too. I avoid them at all dewpoints.

Low dew point combos: Any moisturizing condish as LI (I use more in winter), followed by an enhancer/styler like SS CEJ or UFDCM
Normal dew point combos: Same, with less or no LI
High dew point combos: No LI, same stylers, sometimes combined with harder holding gels

Curl Pattern: 2cish (Fia's), but can appear anywhere from 2a-3a depending on the weather, products, and routine
    Density: medium to thick
    Elasticity: normal (I think)
Characteristics: very little root curl/limp at top, extremely fine and straighter at crown; never colored, dyed, or bleached (except for dabbling with Sun-In once or twice 15 years ago); multiple colors and textures throughout my head (individual strands range from blond and super fine to near black and coarse)

CG/ModCG/not CG: Modified CG. I low-poo occasionally, whenever my hair seems like it has build-up
Hard water or soft water: average, I think
Average climate/dew points: Varies. This winter has averaged under 20 (often single digits), spring and fall seems to be 20-50ish, summer is 40-70+
    Protein section:
Do you PT? If so how often? Yes, at least 1x per week, more in summer
    How long? 10 mintutes.
PT with heat or steam? in the shower
Favorite PTs: Ion, K-Pak, or Giovanni Reconstructor
Favorite products that contain protein? Giovanni Smooth as Silk, K-Pak, Ion Repair
    Proteins your hair likes?
    keratin, wheat, silk
    Proteins your hair dislikes? ?

    Moisture section:
Do you DT? If so, how often? yes
    How long? depends
DT with heat or steam? not usually
Favorite DTs: still trying to find the best one for me
Favorite products to moisturize your hair: Also still working on this, as it seems to depend on the weather.
    Ingredient likes: aloe, agave, jojoba
    Ingredient dislikes: glycerin in winter
Do you seal? If so, what do you use to seal? nope

Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points?
My hair generally loves humectants, but HATES them in winter. Glycerin flash dries my hair in low dews. Once the dews dip below 20, my hair starts reacting badly to KCCC and SS CEJ, so I have been avoiding aloe, honey, and agave, but I'm not actually sure what the culprit is.

    Low dew point combos:
a heavy low humectant conditioner (still trying to find the right one)+FSG+Giovanni LA Natural Gel
Normal dew point combos: SS CEJ+FHG,
High dew point combos: BRHG or another hard hold gel over a light LI
HG/Go-to Products: I seem to have to change my rotation every season, and unfortunately nothing seems to work consistently for me. That being said, my go-to products are:

    KCCC
    BHRG
    FSG
    Giovanni Smooth-as-Silk Conditioner
    Spiral Solutions CEJ and FHG
    Giovanni LA gel

Name the methods, techniques, and tricks that work for your porous hair?
I super soak to get clumps, but wait until my hair is nearly dry to add my hold product
waves, loose coils, and cherub curls (=mixed 2s through 3a), very fine texture overall (but with medium and even coarse strands scattered throughout)

Density: on the thicker side of medium, I think
Elasticity: low to normal, I think
Characteristics: flat top/no root curl, easily weighed down

CG/ModCG/not CG: Modified, usually using a low poo periodically, but maybe a sulfate wash once a month
Hard water or soft water: softish I think
Average climate/dew points: Average climate in summer up to 30C/86F and in winter usually not lower than 0C/32F; dews, I'm not sure for average...dewpoint right now is 3C/36F, humidity 66%

How long? an hour or more if I have the time

Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points? Right now I'm trying to avoid glycerin...not sure if it is a winter thing or hair thing

Curl Pattern: 2b, I'm pretty sure, though really it's probably a mix of a few of them.
Density: stylists always tell me I have "nice thick hair" but to me, it seems medium.
Elasticity: Um...normal? I'm really unsure about this one. The tests I've performed on stray pieces of hair have all given me different results.
Characteristics: No root curl, fairly easy to weigh down, only about a 1/2 inch to an inch of shrinkage, has a tendency to frizz and get really super curly if exposed for a while in cold weather (no amount of gel or conditioner has been able to help this! Argh!), easily straightened

    CG/ModCG/not CG: Mod-CG. I use a low-poo a few times a week, depending on when I think I need it.
Hard water or soft water: Hard in my dorm building, but normal/soft at my parents' house.
Average climate/dew points: I'm unsure on the average dew points, but I know the climate in my college town is sort of dry. Well, dry for Oregon, haha. However, in my hometown, it's fairly wet.

    Protein section:
Do you PT? If so how often?
    How long?
Yes I do. Generally it's around once a week. If I have time, I PT for an hour-ish, but when I don't have time, I just PT in the shower for as long as I can.
PT with heat or steam? Steam, I suppose, when I PT in the shower.
Favorite PTs: The only one I've ever used is Nexxus Emergencee, and it seems to work pretty well. I wouldn't mind trying others sometime, but I'm content for now.
Favorite products that contain protein? Um, I'll get back to you.
    Proteins your hair likes?
    See above.
Proteins your hair dislikes? See above above.

    Moisture section:
Do you DT? If so, how often? I've only ever tried with regular conditioner, left on under a showercap for an hour. Made my hair pretty soft...may have even OC'd me a little. So far I haven't really had much of a need for DTs.
    How long?
    DT with heat or steam?
    Favorite DTs:
Favorite products to moisturize your hair:
Desert Essences Coconut seems to be working pretty well, and I love the consistency/smell.
    Ingredient likes:
Ingredient dislikes: Too much shea butter tends to weigh me down. And coconut oil gets my hair reeeeeeally greased up, even if I just use a dab. Weird, right? Especially considering my conditioner has coconut oil and my hair like that just fine.
I haven't completely given up on coconut oil, though. If I can't find a way to use up the rest of it in my hair, then I guess I'll just have to cook up some killer stir-frys.
Do you seal? If so, what do you use to seal?

Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points?
I sort of halfheartedly try to avoid them (glycerin, mostly) in winter/fall, but I keep managing to convince myself over and over that my hair will be fine if I use humectants in adverse conditions. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, so the jury is still out on this one.
    Low dew point combos:
    Normal dew point combos:
    High dew point combos:

HG/Go-to Products: Ehhhhhh I have some products that I like, but none are HG products, per se. My fall back tried-and-true gel, however, is HE Body Envy. Except that they discontinued it, so I'm gonna have to adapt to a new fallback pretty quick here...

I'm really really liking VO5 Calming Chamomile conditioner as a co-wash though!

Name the methods, techniques, and tricks that work for your porous hair?
Getting hair damp with my hands in the morning to "wake up" my curls, and sometimes adding a little more gel; finger combing in liberal amount of gel immediately after I wash my hair; diluting some of my low-poo in with conditioner when I use it.
    Oregon curly!
Fine hair; weighed down easily; high porosity; prone to flyaways & The Bedhead Look
    2b? (or not 2b? Heehee.)
    Mod-CG since Nov '10
    Cowash: VO5 Calming Chamomile
    RO: Desert Essences Coconut
    Gel: Pantene Curls Gel, LALSG

Curl Pattern: 2b/3a depending on products used/ large waves at root, more length is making a tighter curl pattern. Whirly and the layering makes is moreso
    Density: Medium
    Elasticity: unsure
Characteristics: Fine, feather soft texture (it's got more texture since I started doing PT's)
CG/ModCG/not CG: The only modification from strictly CG is that I diffuse and use hairspray containing alcohol. It doesn't seem to be drying on my hair. Can't leave home without it!
Hard water or soft water: City/ soft
Average climate/dew points: Varies in Ohio - dry winters/ humid summers are not unusual

    Protein section:

Do you PT? If so how often? weekly
How long? 10 mintutes, 1 hour, etc. 10-15mins
PT with heat or steam? neither, just wrap in turban
Favorite PTs: ION Effective Care and I love IAgirls gelatin treatment.
Favorite products that contain protein? LALooks curl gel/ AVG gel daily as a base
Conditioners, leave-ins, styling products, etc. - Fructis Sleek & Shine for a LI. Just started using GVP Conditioning Balm after low-poo and it's nice.
Proteins your hair likes? Seems to like any and all so far.
Proteins your hair dislikes? - So far my hair loves it all

    Moisture section:

Do you DT? If so, how often? Not really DT, but I will leave a conditioner on just after low poo for a minute or two in the shower.
Ingredient likes: My hair doesn't have much trouble with glycerin (Fructis Pure Clean gel or LAL gels all have that ingredient). I like HESMU gel and it is glycerine free.
Ingredient dislikes: Still trying to figure that out. Haven't had much success with FSG.
Do you seal? - I am going to experiment with oils - most likely coconut...have concerns of weigh down, but am willing to give it a try.
Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points? I'm too inexperienced to know the answer to this one.
    Low dew point combos:
    Normal dew point combos:
    High dew point combos:

HG/Go-to Products: BHRG over gels/ AVG under a stronger hold gel. CIAB over anything.
Name the methods, techniques, and tricks that work for your porous hair? Supersoaker and applying products to soaking wet hair. Scrunch like crazy w/ tshirt and diffuse until 80%dry/ airdry for remainder. I like volume, so I pick out slightly and spray for definition. I know, many are gasping right now!!! I don't have a frizz issue, or I wouldn't touch it with a pick (ha)
    2b/3a fine/med-hi density/high porosity (I think)/ highlight-no silicones/sulfates
Lo-poo - ABBA Gentle Shampoo/ Shea Moisture Curl & Shine
Conditioner: GVCB (love it!)/ Regis OO
    Leave in
    : As I Am
    Co-Wash: Tresemme or DevaCurl NoPoo
Stylers: As I Am Curling Jelly/GF Pure Clean/ LALCurl gel - all with BRHG added

    CurlyFireHorse
Hair: 2a or 3a (not sure), very porous and fine as frog hair
Day 1: Cowash and condition with AO GPB, ACV Rinse,
Co-Kra gel (this stuff is fantastic)

Day 3: Curly Kinks Satin Roots, Coil Jam
Day 4: IAGirl's PT, KBB DT, FSG

Co-Kra gel is my own concoction of okra boiled in coconut milk. It is a cross between FSG and KCCC and leaves my hair very soft and shiny

    Curl Pattern: 2a/3a (nc.com), 2c/3aFi (Fia)
    Density: thin
    Elasticity: not sure yet
Characteristics: easily weighed down, lots of shrinkage (well, more than the stylists expect, anyway), short growing phase

Hard water or soft water: hard
Average climate/dew points: low (it's a desert out here!)

    Protein section:

Ingredient dislikes: can't stand coconut oil!
Do you seal? If so, what do you use to seal? No sealing

Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points? Don't avoid humectants yet, but it's on my list of things to pay attention to.

Take just one strand of hair. If you hold it up to the light, is it almost invisible or hard to see? Compare you strand to other people (not related). Is a strand of hair from their head obviously thicker? Or is it thinner? When you get a stray hair caught in your eyelashes or on your hand, do you feel it more than see it?

Or, just get a hair analysis done :)

Curl Pattern: 2b-c, I've been accused of having beachy waves when I get my roots done
    Density: thin
    Elasticity: low
Characteristics: mid back length, baby fine, colored & highlighted, (turning white at age 34:confused1:) dry ends, hard to hold a curl pattern in winter, easily over-conditioned (or so I think), easily weighed down, prone to an oily scalp, prone to frizz

CG/ModCG/not CG: Modified CG, I think I have better luck with a low poo every time I shower. I have tried cowashing but I'm paranoid of looking greasy. I use CHS: Treatment shampoo once a week or as needed when I'm feeling grimy.
Hard water or soft water: Not sure but we can get a lot of reddish mineral deposit on our tub and sinks
Average climate/dew points: MI, mid to high dews in summer, low to very low in winter

    Protein section:
Do you PT? If so how often? IAgirl's gelatin PT probably every 2 weeks. With other PTs about once a week.
How long? 5-30 minutes, it depends
PT with heat or steam? steam in the shower or body heat and a shower cap while I'm out of the shower
Favorite PTs: SS: PRT, IAgirl's gelatin PT, haven't tried any others
Favorite products that contain protein? Curl Queen
Proteins your hair likes? (I think) my hair likes Hydrolized Collagen, which is in gelatin. It adds strength, elasticity, and shine to my hair.
Proteins your hair dislikes? None that I know of

    Moisture section:
Do you DT? If so, how often? I DT after every PT, so about every week or 2
How long? It depends, anywhere from 5 min in the shower to 1 hour with a warmed heat therapy cap from curlmart
DT with heat or steam? Both
Favorite DTs: CJ Curl Rehab, CJ Argan & Olive Oil Condish
Favorite products to moisturize your hair: Pretty much any CJ conditioner
    Ingredient likes: not sure
Ingredient dislikes: glycerin in the winter is very drying
Do you seal? Experimenting with Mineral Oil (Thanks, Jas!)
Do you avoid humectants? If so, which humectants do you avoid? Do you avoid them at all dew points or only certain dew points? I avoid glycerin in low dew points. I only need to avoid it in things that are left on my hair like styling products and leave-ins. I'm still not sure if glycerin is ok for me in normal to high dew points.

Low dew point combos: lol, this week it's: KCNT and CJ PP
Normal dew point combos: still experimenting
High dew point combos: still experimenting & very clueless = frizz city
HG/Go-to Products: Elucence low poo, SM low poo, CHS treatment poo, KCKT, CJ rinse out conditioners, CJ PP, BRHG?
I have way too many products right now and I feel very overwhelmed with all of the different possible combos!

Name the methods, techniques, and tricks that work for your porous hair? Spritz and condish method (when I think of it), conditioner-wash-conditioner method, using a humidifier in winter, applying leave in and styling products to SOAKING wet hair, scrunch out water with 2 Dollar Tree MF Towels, diffuse scalp and roots with Devafuser, let the lower half air dry then scrunch out the crunch
