My Hair Loves Conditioner-Only Styling

Yesterday I decided to just try a leave-in as my styler, namely GVP CB. I used a dime-sized amount, coated my hair, scrunched a little, then let it air dry. I didn't have to go anywhere, so I was okay with however it turned out. It dried into soft, bouncy waves (I'm a 2a/b/c depending on which piece of hair you are looking at). That was the first sign that my hair liked it.

The second sign was that I woke up this morning without having my hair standing up on my head (it's too short to pineapple correctly). It looked just like it did when I went to bed. I didn't even have to rewet or anything.

Thirdly, it's raining here, so the humidity is up this morning, and while I have more volume since I have no gel whatsoever, it's tolerable. It looks and feels nice. :blob8::blob8:

Has anyone had success with just a leave-in only regimen all year long? Thinking of how simple this could make my life and how much my wallet would love it if this could work all year. It's really amazing. I haven't not used gel in so long, I just thought it was necessary. Anyone else had success?

Ha ha! This cracked me up! If only we were all that lucky! I find that a LI makes my waves sag a little, so I need gel to perk it back up again. This is why this routine would probably never work for me. But, it would be fun to dream about it.... ;)

Yeah, I figured there was a reason why I couldn't find much when I did a search.

Hopefully this won't be a one-day thing. I've spent so much money and time trying to get hair that I liked; if this is all it took...

WOW, you're definitely a lucky one!
Can I just ask though, what's GVP CB?:toothy8:

Naturally brunette but dyed hair, dark brown ( nearly black ) in November 2010.Trying to grow to WL but only past SL atm. Currently not CO washing and using Pantenes shampoo. Styling: Schwarzkopf ultimate repair serum with total ends repair. Also use Aussies 3 miracle worker from time to time. 3B,bouncy ringlets, medium thickness, strands are neither fine nor coarse, dry, low elasticity ( when wet, but high elasticity when dry ) and proud to be a curly!

Yep. I only use conditioner in my hair year round. I've been doing that for about two years. I love the Kenra as a leave-in/styler. I have used the conditioning balm, but it was not moisturizing enough for me to leave in. I'm using it now as a rinse out. I do scrunch in a bit of coconut oil after my hair dries. :)

CurliesFTW_xo, I believe the GVP CB would be Sally's generic value product conditioning balm. It's the Matrix Biologe knock-off.

i don't always use only conditioner leave in as a styler, but i frequently do, and this winter have almost exclusively done so, using ss dd as my leave in. in extremely low dewpoints, i do use a sealant on top when i sotc.
if you think about it, curly hair needs lots of moisture, and when it has the right amount, it curls pretty much to it's potential.

i find that my hair is softer, much less likely to frizz for some strange reason.

i do use stylers from time to time, one of which i use as a styler is beauticurls leave in conditioner! that really pumps up my curls.

Thanks for the tip CurryCurls. I'm glad it's working for you too. I'm going to try Yes to Cucumbers Daily Makeover as a leave-in/styler next. My ends are a bit dry, so I might need to check into the coconut oil and/or Kenra. I hope it continues like this. I think of all the money down the drain and in my cabinet...

Yes, CurliesFTW, GVP CB is the Sally's knock-off of Matrix Conditioning Balm.

I'm so happy with this discovery!

RBB, that's a good point. I think maybe my hair is happy that it's getting a dose of moisture plus getting to "breathe." I didn't realize how much volume my thin hair could achieve, but I think it was smothered under gel. I like the voluminous, soft look that I'm getting with the leave-in.

I'm modCG. I use a low-poo and ACV because I have extremely hard water and found that it built up on my hair with just co-washing. I'm hoping this new finding will keep working. Now as for sealants, is that like the coconut oil, or do you use something else?

I was able to do conditioner only styling when my hair was longer all year long. I had to spritz in the morning for second day hair though. However, when I chopped it to chin length I had to use gel if I wanted any kind of curl.

Now I'm growing it out and I want to try conditioner only styling again. But I have to use a very light leave-in or else it's too heavy for my thin wavy hair.

I find that without gel, my curlier hair gets curlier and my straighter hair gets straighter and sticks right out underneath...Gel is sort of a moderator, weighing down the curlier parts and propping up the straighter parts so it looks a lot more consistent than it really is. Also lot of times without product it will look pretty good while it's drying but once it finally gets all the way dry it falls apart.

Really I've used styling goop in my hair pretty much my whole life, I think I have the kind of hair that works better with a bunch of stuff in it.

I just purchased the 1-liter size of Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner as it was a way better price than the 10 oz. I'm hoping this works out for me. If it does, I'll be glad for getting the bigger size.:wav:

Oh, I really hope it works for you. I also buy the liter size. I just bought my second one. The first one lasted forever. It smells really good. :) I use at least two tablespoons, but you'll have to experiment with how much is good for you.

Thanks for the product recommendations. If I can get by with the condish and sealant (part of the year), that would be just fine with me. I could clean up my product stash. It's way after noon here and my hair still looks as good as it did yesterday. Did nothing to it since sleeping on it (except rub some GVP CB in the ends). I can't wait to try the Kenra. Have been reading lots of good things about that.

Yep, I just use leave-in for my styler...unless it's windy...then I'll use some hairspray too (but not often).

I am not CG...I use shampoo/cones. My favorite leave-ins have amodimethicone...that seems to help with humidity and second day hair.

Timely for me. Last night I did a PT with Kpak and then just used olive oil with a little SSDD. My hair is incredibly soft today and the curls are holding their own - even though I keep playing with my curls (cause they're so soft!). And I got the best root curl I've had since winter hit. The olive oil left it a little greasy looking so will try it tomorrow with just conditioner.

Forgot to say that I cleanse with herbal washes and do not follow with any conditioner. I don't need it. I do ACV rinses 1-2 times a week and PT's every two weeks followed by KCKT. Previous conditioner was just too heavy.

I tried conditioner-only styling this morning for the first time in almost a year. Yay! It turned out great! I diluted some KCKT and put two drops of honey for a little bit of shine and a little hold (windy today). I let it air dry.

Now I need to find a light leave-in that I like.

yeah I attribute that to our coarse-ish texture that doesn't bend easily & needs product to control it. Mine will do the same, looks pretty good while it's drying but once it dries it poofs out and loses definition. My DD's hair is fine so we use conditioner only as a styler for her in colder months and her hair does really well.

karen -- i sometimes only use ssdd as leave in and styler..

i use jane carter nourish and shine as a sealant ONLY when the dewpoints are very low, like below 10, or i will be in an overheated, dry bldg that day.

some days after i use the ssdd as my leave in, i then add beauticurls leave in as a styler. this has been it for the winter. my hair is happy.
i do a cj repair me pt about every two weeks.

there are other days, mostly in average to high dewpoints, when i use other products as a styler or to calm down some surface frizz. ie, instead of the beauticurls leave in, i might use cj smoothing lotion.

    I WISH.

My wurl pattern is too weak. It needs lots of scrunching and enhancing. But I've started using less product than I used to, living with a bit of frizz, for touchable hair, and gotten lots of complements on it.

Maybe if I can stop the highlighting and just keep with the demis like I plan my hair will recover and in a year or so I can do this, but not now. I do it occasionally on the weekend when I don't have anywhere to go though.

I noticed in your signature that you use Argan Oil. Can it be used as a sealant? When I had my hair trimmed yesterday...she added just a drop or 2 of the argan oil and then air dried. It was so shiny when it dried.

Yes, I have, especially the hot & humid summer months. I've used V05 Kiwi Lime condish as my styler (in addition to my CO wash - it's such a Jack of All Trades product.) In fact, in my driver's license picture, that's ALL I had in my hair that day ~ and my curls look great (better than in real life, I think).

Right now I'm back on the product-junkie experimentation bandwagon, but when my wallet revolts and forces me to shut down the spending, I'll be doing the V05 conditioner-as-styler again.

Well, I first tried this technique when i read about it at tightlycurly.com it worked, but i think i used too much conditioner because my hair always turned out crunchy and it looked greasy.

Today, I was detangling my hair from swimming (a literal rats nest). What I did was soak under the shower with cold water, add lots of thick, creamy conditioner, add oil and a spray-in conditioner (liquid) A wide-toothed comb wasnt working, so I used a Denman brush. My curls spiraled beautifully! 45 minutes later, I twisted my hair and put it in a plastic shower cap, then layered it with a towel. I let it sit for about 30-45 minutes . Now, my is so soft, moisturized, shiny, bouncy and spiraled! Not a bit of frizz! Im thinking of doing this for my new regimen!

Just keep in mind my hair is thick, course, and 3a underneath with 3b-3c on top. If you have wavy hair this might be too heavy for your hair and may weigh it down a lot .

I forgot to mention that I used the Bed Head Super Straight Conditioner (it doesnt really straighten my hair at all)

In the recent times, I rarely use gel. I have long hair so I do finger twirl in big chunks with lot of conditioner. I have tried everything from Deva one, KCKT, Suave naturals-cocunut ,Aubery Organics Honey suckle , Giovanni smooth as silk, Shea Moisture. All of them have given me good results. Soft bouncy curls. People stop and notice my hair and ofcourse lot of compliments:)

I have never tried a Sealant. I should try once. I have to buy GVP CB also, have been eyeing on that for a while.

Trying it today. Poo'd, Protein, DC then GFTN and jojoba yesterday. Then into a single braid. My hair was juicy enough today to give tresemme/grapeseed, only, a shot. We'll see how it goes! An hour after my shower, already, and I see lots of shrinkage....any tips on handling shrinkage ( without elongating with a diffuser) ?

I have used RO conditioner or LI as my only styler at times. when I was younger that's all I used year-round, never gel. It's just inconsistent for me though (but then most of my routines are these days, lol). I love when I find a conditioner that can hold up on its own! One thing that's really nice about styling this way is your hair doesn't get nearly as tangly as when you use gel, detangling is a breeze! or feel nearly as dry even when it starts getting frizzy.

Winners for me in the past have been Suave Humectant (when I used cones-- this worked for me most of the time for years), Alba LI, EO Lavender, Modern Organic Products, California Baby, Giovanni Direct (no longer though, it foams up and doesn't absorb for hours). Have a sample of CJ Beauticurls that worked nicely but only tried it once. Just bought a bottle of Aussie Moist to try alone based on a rec on curlynikki.com.

I've had luck with this in the past too - it works better though for me if I use the conditioner on dry hair otherwise my hair takes in too much water and gets weighed down. The only conditioner I've tried it with is GVPCB - work it in and at first it doesn't look like it's going to do anything, but as my hair absorbs it, it starts to wave. I don't get strong waves from it, but some beachy waves with an occasional whirl. It's a nice way for me to spice up naked hair with a time limit.

Beauty Without Cruelty. I got really skinny curls with this rather than the more thick clumps I get with the LIs above. It could be because aloe is the 2nd ingredient. When it's further in ingredients lists it's fine, but pure aloe vera gel is just like putting water on my hair. I really wanted to like this because it has some protein in it, which my hair likes, and it smells nice, like lavender.
