Natural hair in Military basic training?

littleamazonlittleamazon Posts: 71Registered Users
I joined the Navy and I go to boot camp this March.

Just wondering does anyone have any experience as a natural in military boot camp (Navy preferably, as they're the one branch that cuts the females hair).

My hair is still pretty short but do you think they'll shave my head?

I'm an 18 year Air Force Veteran (yep, I feel old)... but during my basic training in the *gasp* 90s... I wore a TWA and I loved it. I didn't have time to worry about my hair because of the rigorous schedule - but keeping it short really helped me. I went to basic in Jun of 93 in San Antonio Texas so it was super HOT -- and I while I wasn't trying to win any beauty pagents - neither were the 100s of other women going through when I went through. You have enough time to quickly shower and get out -- so if you have a detailed long regi - suggest you learn to just wash and go. IF your hair is longer, you could get away with braiding it up - just because you won't have leisure time to do a lot of TLC. I sure didn't have time -- and since you gals are going the Navy route - you may have some appointments with the water! Anyway - good luck and thank you for joining and serving your country! Let me know if you have any other questions --

I as well as the ladies above am planning on joining the military & soon. I have already talked to recruiters but just need to drop my last 15pds before I sign my papers. I am joining the airforce tho & I just big chopped but still have about 6 to 7inches of hair. I normally keep my hair in bantu knots for the entire week & then on wash day take them out and then re-twist.

I am very interested in not ony knowing what styles others used but also what products if any are you allowed to bring to basic. I have fortunately gotten into a very good reggie for myself and my hair however I am terrified that basic is going to destroy all my months of hard work.

Any and all suggestions/advice would b greatly appreciated as well.

Former Army here, but I wasn't natural then.

You're going to have next to no time to do your hair. And if your training is anything like mine, you won't have much energy to do it. If you can do small twists or bun, I say go with that.

I am not sure about what the Navy goes through, but we wore headgear and kevlar helmets during field training. Your hair will need to fit under that within regulations. If you get braids or something, make sure they aren't bulky or they'll likely have you take it out.

Practice your most low maintenance hairstyles now that aren't bulky. :afro: won't fly. Be prepared to give up some cuteness as well! Best of luck and thanks for serving!

Hi. I was in the Air Force but did my tech training at Corry Station which is a naval air station in Pensacola, FL. People from all services were on this base, and I remember the black ladies saying the navy cut their hair in boot camp (back then then did not let them know until they got to basic). They will not shave your hair, and it has to meet regs which is above the collar. Good luck!!!
  • yamircarlayamircarla Posts: 38Registered Users
It also has to meet bulk (thickness requirements). Your best bet is to ask your recruiter and also check the website.

hi there, when I went through they provided a short list of things you were authorized to bring. Things may still be the same. What you don't want is to have a lot of items because when it's time for inspection, you run the risk of more scrutiny -- so, less is more! Good luck!!

Thanks for responding. I definitely will be sure to ask ab that. My reggie is pretty simple. I mean I only wash & place in a protective style once a wk & other than that I just moisturize twice a day until wash day comes bk around again.

I was just concerned ab finding products (organic acv, oils, etc). I mean I co-wash one wk, hot oil the next, co-wash the following wk & then do a protein treatment the next wk. So all in all I only use maybe 5 or 6 products in a multitude of ways. So hopefully they will let me bring them all (crossing fingers).

How much time did u have on the wknds? I was thinking that since I only wash once a wk I would have time to do my routine then maybe? I personally am going to go thru OCS instead of regular basic so I would only be there 5wks instead of 8 or 9 and didn't know if the regulations & schedules were different bc according to the OCS schedule u have ur wknds free unless u have an additional scheduled wknd training.

Does anyone know if its possible to go to a near by hair salon during the wknd just to keep ur reggie up bc I'm sure they don't have bonnet dryers readily available at bootcamp. lol.

will it be a good idea to wear my hair curly? or should i do twists or something? because in the wash and go, it does touch my collar now, so i will cut a bit before i leave and scrunch the hell out of it afterwards. if i do twists, there is no way i can have it above my collar unless i chop it all off to nubs in the back. ♥

I was in the Navy. Lol, they won't make you shave your head, but your hair can't "stick out" (for lack of a better way to say it) more than like 2 inches I think. You'll also have to wear a hat all the time so your hair can't interfere with that. Braids are an option but they can't touch your collar. A bun isn't an option...at least when I went to bootcamp back in 2000. They make everyone cut their hair bob length.
You'll have a couple hours on Sundays when you can do your hair. That's when most people shaved their legs, washed their hair, wrote letters etc. But during the week you literally have about 5 minutes a day to take a shower in a community shower...lol. So you don't have time to condition your hair etc.
I don't know if it's changed now but when I went they didn't allow us to bring any products from home, they confiscated everything I brought. Lotion, shampoo, conditioner, a dryer etc.

    HTH and good luck! :)

Lol, I don't wanna sound like Debbie Downer, but there's a good chance that you might have to cut your hair. Unless you can fit your wash n go under a baseball hat. If your twists touch your shoulder they'll make you cut them. I cut my hair before bootcamp and when I got there they still cut it to about right under my ears. You literally have no time to do your hair in the morning, you wake up at like 4 am and 9 times out of 10 you're still extremely tired... Between jacked up hair and big giant brown glasses, everybody is "ugly" in bootcamp. Lol...

Curious question: (I'm not looking to join - disabled), but could you braid and pin your hair up with bobby pins? If your hair is say, APL, could you fake the funk and braid and pin?

Lol. Thanks for the advice. I was just thinking today that maybe I should just get long cornrows going bk & then wrap the ends in a low bun at my neck. That way my hair would be done everyday (and I can still feel cute), its not too much fuss & then I don't have to worry ab the everyday drama except making sure my hair is moisturized.

D Marie is correct. When I was in tech school I remember the ladies in the navy saying all women had to get their hair cut (no bobs or braids). I remember being shocked because in the Air Force we could wear a a bun or braid. I wore one big french braid and learned how to rebraid it in bed every night. As mentioned above, you have just enough time for your community shower and to wash your teeth and face. Our last week in basic we got additional time to do our hair and things.

Nope...I think the Navy has some kinda fascination with chopping off our hair. Lol No buns, updos etc. I did have a friend that had braids in a bob style though. I guess it all depends on being in the right place at the right time...sometimes you can get through unchopped.

Bootcamp is a little foggy for me now cause it was like 11 yrs ago...lol, but you do get to go to the NEX a limited number of times for a limited amount of time and NEX's do sell conditioner. They monitor what you buy to make sure u don't buy candy etc., but I believe you can buy some if I recall correctly. It won't be anything top of the line though, probably something like Suave or Pantene or something.

Lol...no, no oils or acv. You'll only be allowed basic things. You get a really tiny locker for your things. The biggest portion is for your uniforms and there's a tiny drawer about the size of a desk drawer for your personal things. They inspect your entire space. Not only that but you really won't have much time to fuss with oils and rinses etc. You may not even get the chance to go to the NEX for a while, it's at their discretion.

I just remembered that I have a friend that's a recruit division commander (RDC) out there in Great Lakes. If anyone has any specific questions I can always ask her for you guys

Ok. Thats good to know & I guess its good that I got hooked on Suave so long ago. Lol. However can u also purchase ur oils (grapeseed, almond, etc.) & like acv there as well?

Thanks so much for all ur help. Im a really low maint. girl however I guess I will have to become even more so while in bootcamp. I mean I only wash, condish & protective style once a week & moisturize twice a day but from the sounds of things it seems like I won't even be able to keep that up. I'm convinced now that I should just get my hair cornrowed & place it into a bun by my neck & call it a day. That way at least all I have to do is worry ab keeping my hair moisturized each day.

will we be able to buy conditoner at nex or only shampoo? i'm really nervous about that because naturally straight people may be able to get away with that, but not me. ♥

Oh no!! They make you chop! The Navy goes hard in the paint, mkay! Do you think she can get away with crochet braids cut into a bob? She can keep all of her hair and get the bob that is easy to maintain at the same time.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, I'm glad this thread got some attention :]

Ok, so I'm pretty relieved that they won't shave my head. And my hair is still pretty much in TWA stage. I just tried on a baseball cap and my hair sticks out of it in the back. It doesn't touch my collar though.

Do you think it would be a better idea to just show up to boot-camp with cornrows?

Thats what I'm gonna do. I figure it's the simplest thing to do w/the minimal amount of time we will have in the am so all I have to do is moisturize and go.

However I have joined a few military websites where I receive email updates each day with news, changes, etc. ab each military branch. Either way I was on the sites researching hair & alot of the ladies were saying that while cornrows & braids should be ok that some specific places will not allow u to have them. So its a good idea to check out the specific place u will be going and their regulations.

Also the ladies stated that while they were allowed to have braids & cornrows when they arrived they were all made to take them out the last week (I think they called it warrior week) bc they were all told they had to look uniform. They even stated that a few of the girls had micros & they were made to remove them as well.

So w/that being said I'm just going to check into my indiv. base to make sure they're ok & if they are then get cornrows & put them in a bun at the base of my neck. Plus I will also have a back up plan for what to do w/my hair that last week just in case u do have to remove them. Alot of the ladies suggested practicing some styles before u go so that ur not scrambling even more so in the am & bringing bobby pins/the old school flat barrette's (that must match ur hair color btw) just in case.
