I like some CJ products and some SS products. I haven't found that any particular "line" suits me better than others; I just pick products from lots of lines and then mix and match. From CJ I love Daily fix and Curl Queen, and I recently became a fan of SS Firm hold gel.

BOTH!!!! Seriously. I use SS CEJ almost every day. And I use CJ products (MOST Of them) every day. It's pretty common for me to use SS CEJ along with either CJCQ or CJAFL as my styling products.

NOT using SS CEJ with either of those gels doesn't give me as much curl as I like. SS CEJ is a curl enhancer, not a gel. So, that particular product wouldn't get used in place of a gel.

I haven't tried any of the other SS products. But, I've tried just nearly every CJ product and love them all!

both are great. of course, it is not likely that your hair will like the entire line of either, and i think that is why they have many products to work for different types of hair.
the ss deeply decadent moisturizing treatment is an hg for me. i use it as a deep treatment, and as my conditioner and leave in. i use it daily.
i love many cj products, some i use almost every day, some once in a while, depending on dewpoint and there are some i never tried as i suspect my hair would not love them.
you can always email marsha at info@curljunkie. com and describe your hair and ask her recommendations. both spiral solutions and curljunkie have outstanding customer service by the owners!

Some of both. I like and use CJCC Lite regularly, CJCC sometimes, and CJDF a lot. I like and regularly use SSPT, SSDD, and SSFHG, and sometimes use SSCC (don't think I'll repurchase) and protein spray.

I don't care for most other CJ products I've tried (Aloe Fix Gel & CIAB to name a couple) or for the other SS products that I didn't mention.

I agree that both have excellent customer service. I like that you can get SS products unscented.

    Spiral Solutions:
    • Curl Enhancing Jelly - HG product for me / use it under gels
    Curl Junkie:
    • Daily Fix - love, love, love this cleanser
    • Beauticurls Daily Hair Conditioner - I use this as a leave-in sometimes
    • Beauticurls Leave-In Conditioner - love this LI!
    • Curl Assurance Smoothing Condish
    • Beauticurls Strengthening Condish - another HG product for me (used as both a RO and a LI)
    • Repair Me! - LOVE this protein treatment/condish
    • Curl Rehab - I use this after a protein treatment
    • Curl Fuel - I use to tame frizzies after over-styling
    • Curls In A Bottle - Gel, used over SS CEJ or CCCCLite or CCCC
    • Coffee-Coco Curl Creme Lite - used under gels when not using a LI
    • Coffee-coco Curl Creme - I use this more often in higher dews under my gels.
I just ordered SS Caitlin's Conditioner and some more SS CEJ because SS is having a sale right now. Caitlin's Condish was recommended to me in my Curl Wizard profile. So, chances are, it'll work well for me. But, we'll see! ;) Good luck!

I've tried several products from each line and like some and dislike some! Of course my hair has different properties though...

    Spiral Solutions:
-Curl Enhancing Jelly: Give great shine, not much curl enhancing on its own. Like it better mixed with something like KCCC
-Firm Hold Gel: hated it. No enhancement and get limp hair.
-Deeply Decadent: Moisturized pretty well, only had a trial size.
-Repairing Protein Treatment: Liked this but only had a trial size.
-Caitlin's condish: Love this! I use it when I need an extra protein punch.

    Curl Junkie:
(almost too many to name, haha. Most of these were samples from kathymack!)
-Aloe Fix lite: Love this. Great clumps and curl enhancing. Much better than the regular Aloe Fix.
-Beauticurls condish: Love this too. I think this is a better summer condish though.
-Curl Fix PT: Works great but stinky! I think I like the new PT better.
-Curl Rehab: Love it. I use it as my DT!
-Beauticurls leave-in: Didn't like this at all. Made my hair too soft.
-CCCC lite: blech. No wave enhancement, just flat hair.
-CCCC: way too heavy and no wave enhancement.
-H&B condish: was ok but no room in the rotation for it!
Coarse texture, normal-high porosity, normal elasticity (Komaza Care), very weak waves
cleanser: Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo, CJ Daily Fix

rinse out: GVP Conditioning Balm, CJ Beauticurls, CJ Smoothing

    jellies/creams: CR Curl Maker, KCCC
gels: CJ CQ, CJ Pattern Pusha, BRHG

Both lines are my HG lines, though I'm going through a fragrance sensitivity to the CJ. I have to pick and choose what to use. I like SS because I can get everything unscented.

I will add that unlike racerwife, I CAN use the CEJ on it's own for hold as well as enhancement. SS's etsy site says that it has light hold, and it's just enough for me to enhance and give me soft, touchable hold that stays. I used to think I needed a hard hold gel on top but I don't usually. I can also use UFDCM the same way. HTH!

They're both good lines; however, if I had to choose one, I think Curl Junkie would win every time. I've used the majority of both lines, and if my reordering statistics are anything to go by, I constantly make sure I have various CJ products around... but I'm still working on my first round of SS and don't think I'll be re-ordering much.

In SS, I like Caitlin's Conditioner. It's got protein, humectants, moisture - all the goodies. It is, however, a little oily for me to use every day, and doesn't seem to like hard water for some reason. The curl enhancing jelly and firm hold gel are okay for me, but I'm aloe sensitive in low dews and these products are just too aloe-heavy for me to use year round. They also don't have much hold for me, alone or together, and omg the frizz (I suspect I just haven't been generous enough in my usage, but it's not been warm enough for me to test my theory). I was less than impressed by Deeply Decadent and the protein spray (seemed nice at first - but didn't do much after that first usage).

I like all of CJ, but my favourites are Curl Rehab, CCCC, Daily Fix, and Curl Fix. They do what they say on the tin - what more could you possibly want?
3b/c. Fine, med-high porosity, normal elasticity. Hair loves oils in summer, protein in winter. Constantly battling the hard water monster.

I really think that depending on the hair type-- you'll get a different answer everytime. SS IMO is made for wavies, wurlies and looser curlies (or it works optimally in these groups). CJ IMO is a more well-rounded and developed line that almost every type and texture can find several things to use and love.

-SS beats CJ in terms of playing with other products well. I've never had a bad reaction using my SS stuff with drugstore or boutiquey stuff.
-CJ beats SS in terms of formulation. Marsha is just Marsha is just.. Marsha. :)
    - SS is cheaper, but CJ lasts longer (for me anyway-- b/c of the formulation I suspect. I dont need as much).

    Who wins? CJ for me.

but I still have drawer's full of Shantelle's stuff in my house. LOLOL!:toothy8:

while i love cj products, i also love ss dd.
and, i found a new use for it this week.

i now use it as a curl styling cream! after blotting water out of my hair, i coat my hands with it and scrunch/style my hair the way i want it to air dry (or diffuse).
it's been working so well! not too heavy this way, coats my hair, yet leaves it soft and curly.

I love both SS and CJ, and use one or the other every single time I style my hair. The only other product line I use at the moment is Marie Dean (really love her curly styling cream and red clover/honey leave-in).

Here are my favorite styling combos. With all of them, I supersoak, plop, and air dry or diffuse. If I have a few flyaways once hair is dry, I use a little MD as a pomade and smooth it over dry hair. (Note: If I use too much and hair looks greasy, I turn the diffuser back on for a couple minutes and re-scrunch). In high dews I finish with MD as a pomade all the time; in fall/winter/spring, some of the time.

My hair is 3A, fine (although there is a lot of it), and not porous. It tangles easily; I have an oily scalp; and I easily get over-conditioned. Consequently, I use small amounts of the creamier products, and always apply to soaking wet hair or supersoak to enhance product distribution.

Gels for extra hold (SS FHG and CJ CQ) are applied after plopping. When I use CJ CQ, which is very concentrated, I only use a quarter-size amount and mix it with a little water prior to use.

    Summer (high dews)
CJ CCCC (regular) + SS CEJ
MD CSC or MD mango pudding + SS CEJ

    Fall/Winter/Spring (moderate to low dews)
CJ CCCC lite + CJ CQ or SS FHG
CJ CCCC lite (used alone when I braid wet hair and pin up)
MD leave-in + SS CEJ + SS FHG
    CJ beauticurls leave-in + CIAB
    MD CSC + SS CEJ

    rinse-out conditioner (all year long)
    CJ smoothing conditioner
    CJ curl rehab
    CJ repair me
    hair type: 2B/3A
low poo: Elucence moisture; Elucence clarifying (after swimming)
condish: CJ smoothing; CJ argan; CJ repair me; CJ curl rehab
winter/spring styling: CJ Beauticurls leave-in + Curly Kinks coil jam + Ouidad mongongo oil; or CJ leave-in + SpiralSolutions CEJ & FHG
summer/fall styling: CJ CCCC lite + CIAB + Curl Queen

Does anyone else notice a little frizz from the SS CEJ? I've been going back and forth between that and AOMM and so far seem to get better clumping and less frizz with the AOMM. How much do you all use of the CEJ? I used about 2-3 quarter size. I love the SS FHG though, finally a natural gel that holds! and isn't sticky!

I don't get frizz from CEJ (because it doesn't contain glycerin), but I do get a few flyaways because the hold is good but not strong. To counter this, I use a little curl cream or leave-in conditioner smoothed onto dry hair to tame flyaways, lightly re-scrunching as needed. My favorite products for SOTC are MD red clover/honey leave-in and MD CSC. I generally use the MD leave-in to tame flyaways in low-med dews, and the MD CSC in high dews (since it's a heavier product).

I've done a similar routine with CJ CIAB in place of SS CEJ; CIAB gives me slightly less hold then CEJ, but hair is shinier, so it's a trade-off. Some people like to SOTC with just a tiny bit of CIAB to add shine and definition even if they don't use it as their main product.

If I use CEJ as my only hold product, without extra gel on top, I always use a curl cream underneath (to supply additional hold). If I use a leave-in conditioner under CEJ instead, then I top with FHG (lightly scrunched in after plopping). My favorite curl creams to use under CEJ are: CJ CCCC (summer only), CJ CCCC lite, and MD CSC.

I always use 3 full pumps of CEJ for my BSL hair. I supersoak afterwards (to maximize product distribution) and then plop for 20-30 minutes before air drying or diffusing.

So, to summarize, my two main ways of using CEJ are:

    1. leave-in + CEJ + FHG
    2. curl cream + CEJ + SOTC (with leave-in or curl cream)

Basically, I use CEJ almost every single time I style, except on those occasional times when I substitute CIAB instead, or when I use a stronger gel (CJ CQ) in place of both CEJ and FHG.

    Thanks Melaniesusan!
I have been doing your #1 styling routine, maybe it's just my hair and the dead sea salts? I'm waiting for my JC samples to come in the mail so I'll see how it does with the mag. sulf. in them and I'm waiting to order the CJ samples since they are out of stock. I'm just not totally convinced it works the best for me. My hair seems to like a little bit of glycerin in a product with aloe to counteract the frizz but not too much or I go whimpy & stringy.
Plain old Fote gives me lots of curl but also lots of frizz! I may end up combining several different product lines to find my HG. For some reason the AOMM works pretty good so far and I'll continue to compare that and the SS CEJ until I run out and have to make a decision.

The marie dean products look good I've notice a lot of you using her curl cream , how does it compare? I have also notice the Donna Marie curl jelly too, have you tried that as well?

Beebop, I initially thought the CEJ didn't work for me either, and was concerned about the sea salts. It turned out the issue was either (1) I was using too little product (now I use 3 full pumps); or (2) I wasn't combining it with the right leave-in underneath. Once I sorted out these two issues, it works great. Initially, though, I stopped using CEJ altogether and just used FHG as a curl cream with a second gel on top for hold. Now, using more CEJ over my leave-in,very little FHG, and no 2nd gel, my hair is much happier.

I avoid glycerin like the plaque if dews are under 35F. I can take it only in very small doses, like in CCCC lite. It always gives me frizz. In high dews, by contrast, glycerin boosts my curl. So I'd say, make sure you're using a leave-in conditioner with no glycerin in it. Also, if you use a heavier product (like a curl cream) underneath the CEJ, then you might not need the FHG on top - it might be too much. Better to use a light buttery product to SOTC to tame flyaways in that case instead.

My favorite MD products are the curly styling cream and the red clover/honey leave-in. I also like the mango pudding plus, but in high dews only. You can get samples from Kathymack if you're interested in trying them out. I haven't tried the DM curl jelly, because it has glycerin and I don't need another summer product. In summer, I rotate CJ CCCC (regular not lite), MD CSC, and MD pudding plus: all under SS CEJ.

    Thanks Melaniesusan,
I'll check out my leave in and see for sure whats in it, I usually just leave in a little of my rinse out or Alba soft style cream. It looked pretty good today, a little fuzzy by the end of the day though. I'll use the AOMM tomorrow and compare. The CEJ didn't seem to have quite enough hold for me on it's own but I haven't tried it with the alba soft style cream either. Today I used the FHG over it.

It seems to me (from this thread and others) that the people who love CJ tend to have stronger curl patterns, where as the ladies who prefer SS tend to have loser curls and/or finer hair. Would others agree with this observation?

Re: CEJ and frizz/flyaways== I found it gave me flyaways in dry weather. I think it's probably the agave or the aloe. If I use leave in, though, it's better...

@sbudsky: I don't have a strong curl pattern, but the more I've used both CJ and SS over time, my hair has become healthier so I need a little less gel than I used to. I used to use BRHG all the time, and now I almost never use it. Comparing CJ and SS, I don't get stronger curls with one line than the other. The only thing that gives me consistently strong curl is summer humidity (which unfortunately comes with frizz as well!) Adding a little protein to my routine also helps boost my curl.

For me, CEJ doesn't really "give" me flyaways; left to its own devices, my hair naturally has its own flyaways and I need products with hold to control them. The easy solution is to always use a hard-hold gel (like BRHG). However, I generally don't like the way my hair feels with this in it.

So what are the alternatives to hard-hold gel for someone (like myself) with a weak curl pattern?

    The possibilties:
*A light- or medium-hold gel provides hold but virtually no moisture.
*A leave-in conditioner provides moisture but virtually no hold.
*A curl cream provides moisture plus some hold.
*A gelly, like CEJ, provides a little moisture and a little hold.

    Solutions:

    1. Curl cream + gelly = 2 sources of hold, neither of them crunchy. I still have some flyaways leftover, so the final SOTC step becomes crucial.

    2. leave-in + gelly + medium-hold gel = 2 sources of hold, neither of them crunchy.

Gellies I've used and liked: SS CEJ, CJ CIAB, KCCC, UFDCM

Medium-hold gels I've used and liked: SS FHG, CJ CQ

@Beebop: IMO, when using CEJ over a curl cream, without an additional gel on top, the final SOTC step is crucial if you want to get rid of all flyways. You could use a tiny amount of a light butter product, like JC N&S, or one of the MD products. Or you could try a little bit of your leave-in conditioner and see how that works.

Also, the CEJ doesn't have enough hold for me either when used over a leave-in conditioner instead of a curl cream. I always finish with FHG in those cases.

The exciting thing is that CEJ + FHG (2 products) makes my hair more soft and touchable and less producty than using BRHG (1 product) without forfeiting any definition.

melaniesusan- you are such a great wealth of knowledge!!:thumright:It looks like the two curl creams/jellies you use with a little hold are the CJ CCCC lt. and the SSCEJ? The rest of them look more like moisturizing leave ins/curl creams?

Yes my hair is naturally frizz fly away too, so I'm sure the SS CEJ isn't causing it, it just can't take care of it on it's own without the FHG. I'll try it tomorrow with my alba soft style cream since it has a little hold. How much comes out of each pump when you have a full size bottle? ( I only have the 2oz. sample ) I think I may always need the FHG since my wave pattern is pretty weak and gets weaker as the day goes on. Can't wait to finally try the JC samples and CJ samples as well. I'll also try the AOMM again with just the FHG too, it seems to be a good combo. Did you ever try AOMM?

It looks like your favorite gel is the SS FHG? then maybe the CJCQ or CIAB? Do they all have about the same strength of hold as the SS FHG? I really like the CEJ and the FHG combo, I just may need to be using more of the CEJ.

a word on the marie dean curling cream. i just got mine, and almost passed out from the very strong smell!! no choice of unscented, only vanilla available. if i were standing in starbucks i'd love the smell, but not on my head all day long! it smells like a very strong cup of something special from starbucks.

i have been using spiral solutions deeply decadent moisturizing treatment as a curl cream. after my leave in (currently using cj argan & olive oil conditioner), i blot excess water from my hair, then scrunch in the ss dd. it's been great -- what i like about ss dd is that it gives me shine, curl and softness. after reading ingredient lists on curl creams, it hit me that a lot of those ingredients are in ss d, so...... i tried it and i'm liking it very much. i also have found that cj and ss products work well together.

    3a, some 2c & 3b, medium texture, porosity normal, low elasticity :-(

@ Beebop: My favorite curl creams are: CJ CCCC lite (low to med dews); CJ CCCC (high dews); and MD CSC. My favorite gelly is SS CEJ. My favorite gel is SS FHG, with CJ CQ in 2nd place, BRHG in 3rd place, and ABBA firm-hold gel in 4th place.

Explanation of my gel rankings: CQ gives me more hold than FHG, but it's too easy to overdo, resulting in stiff hair, so I prefer FHG. When I use CQ correctly, hair is softer/more touchable than with BRHG. ABBA gives me firm hold (like BRHG), but with softer hair than BRHG does. However, I can only use it in high dews (because it contains a lot of glycerin), so it's less versatile.

Because SS FHG is only a medium-hold gel rather than a hard-hold gel, it doesn't give me quite enough hold by itself used over a curl cream. (If I want to use just curl cream + gel, then I use either CQ or BRHG for my gel.) Consequently, I prefer using FHG in conjunction with CEJ to boost the hold. At the same time, curl cream + CEJ + FHG can be too producty for my hair. That is why I prefer leave-in + CEJ + FHG instead. Or just curl cream + CEJ + SOTC w/ MD product.

Try this latter option at some point - it might work better than you expect. Kathymack is the one who gave me the idea, and it worked great. I just couldn't figure out for the longest time how she could get away with using a gelly rather than a gel, and this has really made it possible for me.

My wave/curl pattern also gets weaker as the day goes on, except in summer when humidity keeps my curls perky, and I'm generally okay with that. If you want to boost your curl even more, however, you could try adding more protein to your routine. FHG contains some silk protein, but you could also try CJ CCCC lite mixed with a little CJ curl fix (one of DEL2C's favorite combos). Or you could use CJ Repair Me as your rinse-out (I use this once a week).

In answer to your other questions: I did use AOMM a while ago, and couldn't get it to work for me, but I might not have used it properly. I've also had good luck with BB's FSG, but ultimately found that SS CEJ worked for me more consistently. And UFDCM works very similarly to SS CEJ but I detest the scent; plus, it's more expensive than CEJ.

In terms of amounts, 1 full pump of CEJ yields 1 flat quarter-size amount of product. I use 3 pumps altogether, so 3 quarter-size amounts in total (one for each side, and one for the back of my hair).

@ rbb: Marie Dean does tend to overdo scents in her products. Initially, she made the CSC with a caramel-scent, and by the end of day 1, I was tired of it. By the end of day 2, I couldn't wait to wash my hair. I then switched to the mango pudding plus for a while, and intended to order the CSC in unscented. However, she sent me a sample of the CSC in a new scent, which I think was the raspberry vanilla, and it was fine. The good news is that once any of her products have been sitting on your shelf for a few months, the intensity of the scent is substantially reduced. So if you can't bear it now, just put it to the side for a while and try it again in the summer.

thanks! i could not figure out what to do with it, i could not even offer it to my daughter. i had to wash my pillowcase the next morning! i'll set it aside and try it again in a couple of months.

Another option: assuming you like the vanilla scent but just find it too strong, you can contact Marie Dean and ask her when the unscented CSC will be back in stock. Then order that one and mix the two together. That way you'll have the same scent, but half as strong as it is currently.

Meleaniesusan-Sounds like I haven't used enough of the CEJ since mine was in the little trial size and I squirt out probably a nickel to quarter size, I've been a little stingy trying to get it to last a little longer.

CJ is still backordered on their samples so if Kathy Mac has them as well and isn't anymore expensive I'll see if I can get them from her. What does she put them in ( small containers, amt? )

I thought you also used CIAB? does it not have as much hold as FHG?
like you if I put too many products in my hair it will weigh it down so CEJ & FHG or cccc lt. with CEJ or a gel should work fine for my hair, plus I like to keep it simple, it makes it really difficult when you travel or even at home.
I do have the JC N&S that I use occasionally ( addicted to the scent! ) but I have to be very careful with it as it tends to make me greasy looking.

I'd love to try the other combos you mentioned so I'll wait for samples. Thanks again for letting me pick your brain!

Beebop, in terms of hold, I would compare SS FHG to CJ CQ. I would compare the hold of CIAB to CEJ: both are definitely gellies rather than med-hold gels. That being said, I get a little bit more hold from CEJ than from CIAB, so I usually choose CEJ over CIAB. I do really like the CJ beauticurls leave-in + CIAB + SOTC w/MD combo, however.

I'm sorry I was mistaken, I though CIAB was a firm gel, sounds like it's more of a curl enhancing gellie? So one of the other CJ harder hold gels would have to go with it or SS FHG?

but it sounds like the CCCC Lt. has more curl enhancing properties than the CIAB? Sorry for all the questions.
