NJ Deva Stylists, Please?

malucurlmalucurl Registered Users Posts: 4
I'm trying to find a deva stylist in NJ that not only works with curls, but takes into account the shape of your face, your age and body type. Is this asking too much? I have had great cuts with Carlos in NYC, but he is unwilling to try anything new with me and I need a change. Any ideas? What happened to the people at Zoo Crew? I always meant to try there. Any thought on Beauty Basics or other hidden gems that I may be missing?

I am open to any and all suggestions,
Thank you:

    Hi!
I think it would help to know what part of jersey you're in?

I actually wouldn't have any experience to share with you, hehe, because the only curl friendly cut i've ever had so far WAS at Devachan in NYC.

However, it is a lot of traveling, and so i decided to do a bit of research, and came up with Laboratory hair studio in Morristown. I saw a few good reviews, and so i've made an appointment for next week!.

I will keep you posted with the results...

You don't say where in NJ you're from. I live in Bergen County and go to Joyce at Glamour Beauty Supply in Ridgewood. I've only been to her once. But, she did a great job. I'm going back again on Saturday 1/22 for my 2nd Deva Cut. While I didn't, specifically, ask her to take the shape of my face, my age, and my body type into account, she seemed open to my suggestions and requests. So, she may be someone you'd like to try if you're close enough. ;)

Here's the info on the "salon" (The main business is a beauty supply store. They have a TINY salon in the back. Trust me when I say TINY. LOL!)

I went to Val at Laboratory a few weeks ago. I am closer to Morristown than you are, though. I went b/c of recommendations on this site.

I am not sure what I think anymore (which is why I still haven't submitted a formal review). At first I was very happy. She spent a lot of time & gave me a lot of helpful tips. She really seemed to know curly hair & what she said & did seemed to match the CG method. And she was really really nice. And I looked good!

But I have had to keep trimming my hair, b/c it is so uneven. I thought the point of a dry cut was to take the varying curl patterns into account & cut accordingly. On the other hand, maybe it takes a few times? I don't know.

I have a bigger issue with the Bumble & Bumble products I went home with. She actually recommended 5 Bumble & Bumble products for a total of something like $130. Yeah, right. I know that salons push their products, so I'm prepared for that--it's just an annoyance. What bothers me is that I discovered (after weeks of use) that the 2 products I did buy both contain dimethicone. I wasn't planning on sticking with them--I just wanted something while I researched what I wanted to try longer term--but this bothered me. I thought this was such a major no-no (although responses to a post I made on this weren't quite as alarmed as I was :-) ) I am getting a better curl now, but I'd still prefer not to have the cones in my hair.

    I think I paid about $75.

In looking around, I've found mixed reviews for supposedly curly salons nearby, so I'm really not sure what to do. I'm actually considering the trek to Devachan, although if you read their reviews, they're mixed too....I may wind up trying another stylist at Laboratory, but I think I'd bring my own products (if I have the nerve). Hopefully by then I'll have figured out what the right ones are!
    My properties
    Fine, normal porosity, normal elasticity

Leave-in Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut; looking for a replacement for the no-longer-CG Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition
Gel Looking for a replacement for the discontinued LAL blue gel. Also thinking I need a low- or no-humectant gel for high-dew days, but haven't figured that one out.

    HI!
I hear ya on the prices!
Sorry it took me so long... but i had to move my appt to next week, but ill def let you know how it goes!

To the comment below: I saw on their website as well that they use bumble and bumble... am a bit worried about that, and i'm thinking of bringing my own stuff or asking them to use something else??? Ill figure it out, but I don't think I'll be lured into buying any products i dont need/want :P I'm pretty set with stylers as of now....

    Hi NanaChan!!!!

I finally got my haircut at Laboratory hair studios!!!!

I saw Lacey and i have to say, I do NOT regret it!
after seeing the above review, i was very hesitant, since their website does not mention they use Devachan products.... but she did! after explaining to her what i wanted, she asked me what products i had in my hair, how often i shampooed/conditioned my hair (i told her about my cg ways :P) and she understood immediately... she cut my hair dry... amazing cut, just as good or maybe even better (:!:) than Devachan... I believe she DID use a 'poo on me, because i had highlights done, and after the glaze, she had to wash my hair... but i'm not as worried about sulfates as i am of 'cones... SO i was super excited when she told me she was going to use One-Condition and Heaven in hair on me... after that she left some one c in my hair, and proceeded to apply some angel, and then dried my hair. Afterwards, she scrunched out with Mirrorcurls...

My experience there was superb, Lacey was nothing short of professional, and i was amazed that she did NOT try to push any other products on me... I DID end up buying the mirrorcurls, because i've been meaning to try it out, but overall, I was left with the feeling that i wanted lacey to be my stylist, at least for once....
I will wait until i have to style my own hair to leave a review for her, but i have a feeling its going to be a good one :P

if you wanna see pics, go to the 3a section, and go to the topic called....I need your opinionnnn.... or search those words, i posted some pictures of my cut :P....

Good luck with whatever you go with!

Karen, I went to look at your pix & you really did get a great cut. I love it.

I'm sorry I made you nervous about Laboratory. But glad it worked out.

Your experience makes it more likely that I'll try them again. Thanks so much for posting.

DONT WORRY!!! you did make me think about it, but thats why we need to hear different opinions right!? your review made me more comfortabel with going with a different stylist than valerie (which was who i wanted to see in the first place, based on the raves ;-)) but since i couldn't get an appt with her, and then i read about your experience, i was ok with trying someone else there!

I'm glad you might give them a second chance! i guess next time make sure you tell them what products you're not ok with having in your hair!

I had the same issue with Carlos.... great technician but he wouldnt change my hair a dot.

IMO stay away from Beauty Basics... I had an extremely bad experience with the Curly Cutter there (sweet girl, but my hair REALLY suffered).

I am LOVING Erin (Owner/stylist) at Salon coco Bond in Little Silver, She is not Deva trained but is naturally curly and KNOWS curls. I cant rave enough about her or the salon. There is also a Deva trained stylist at the Salon, should you prefer to go that route, but I havent tried her.

I live in South Jersey and I went to a salon in Haddonfield named Personal Expressions Salon. The stylist is Mary Ann and she's wonderful! I was so scared to skimp on the main salon for my first cut, but I went anyway. She was so attentive, definitely knew her curly stuff. She even teaches other stylists how to do DevaCuts. She did mine dry, and it came out WONDERFULLY! I've even switched to Deva products. It wasn't because she pushed me, it was honestly because my hair felt the best in a lonnnng time with the DevaCare/DevaCurl products. Also, I specifically asked her for a style that would slim out my round face. She added some volume and resolved the boring "roundness" to my hair. It has a sort of heart-shaped quality to it and it definitely makes my face seem more oval than round. So this may help with your issue of finding a stylist who deals with more than just hair.

All in all, I'm very happy. She handled my 3c/4a hair really well. She was super gentle. And the cost was amazingly reasonable. At the main salon in NYC, my cut, style, and products would've been well over $200. THe cut itself was only 70 bucks, without atx. I was SO happy and can't wait to go back for prom.
    :love5:

hair type: 3c/4a, naturally super soft, and really prone to frizz.
    :blob7:

    :love7:i heart naturally curly hair!

Does anybody know a place that has a good stylist closer to New Brunswick? I used to go to Denise in Bernardsville who did a great Deva cut, but she has moved to Morristown and I do not want to drive that far.
    Thanks.

Can anyone help me find a good curly hair stylist that can give my hair good shape? I like getting it cut dry but I realized my hair has less and less shape because of either this type of cut or maybe it's my hair stylist. Does anyone have a recommendation?

    Thanks!

Any suggestions for a stylist in either Union County or Middlesex County? I work in Elizabeth and live in Old Bridge. I'm super tired of trying people who are supposed to be curly experts and getting a crap cut!

Bumping this! Would love to know of a good salon in Union & Middlesex County as well! I don't mind NY since I go to school in Manhattan but I don't wanna spend that NY money!

I just want someone to take my 3 different curl patterns/textures into account & my varying hair lengths. I'm a 4a/3c mix (w/maybe some 4b). currently SBL, nearly BSL. 5-6 inches tops at the sides, 8ins in front, rest of my hair is 12-14 inches.my shrinkage makes it generally unnoticeable tho. I fear going to a salon for a cut and coming back with shoulder length hair :/
