Nature's Gate vs. Desert Essence

My parents are going to the USA later this year, so I thought about asking them for some good, cheap organic conditioners (something I can't find in my country...).

In my extensive research I found out two big favorites are NG and DE, and it would be really helpful to know which of the two you recomend.
Extra points if you tell me what "variety" (flavor) you like best!

Thank you soooooo much!

I've never tried either one, but I do know that the Nature's Gate low-poos and conditioners have tons of protein in them. So if your hair is fine in thickness or protein-loving, go for it! I'm not sure about the Desert Essence ones, but I do know that a lot of people around here use them. I've heard some of them are a little drying, though. HTH a little!

I use the Desert Essence Body Boosting Organic Jojoba Conditioner as a co-wash. It's very thin and liquidy, definitely not a stand alone conditioner. It barely detangles!
However, I do love it as co-wash conditioner! My scalp just eats it up! But I have to follow it with my normal conditioner, Aubrey Organics White Camellia. If I don't, my hair is a tangled mess.

Just to add on to this thread, i was wondering about the Nature's Gate products a little bit myself.

Specifically, the Nature's Gate Fruit Blends Grapefruit and Wild Ginger Conditioner. Was going to try it as a co-wash and was wondering if it was CG friendly. I bolded the ingredients I'm pretty worried about.

Ingredients: Water, Pelargonium Graveolens (Rose Geranium) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract*, Salvia Sclarea (Clary) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract*, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract*, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Extract*, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Extract, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract*, Actinidia Arguta (Kiwi) Fruit Extract*, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Extract*, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract*, Euterpe Oleracea (Acai) Fruit Oil*, Passiflora Incarnata (Passionflower) Flower Extract*, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract*, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Flower Extract*, Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola) Extract*, Echinacea Angustifolia Extract*, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) Extract*, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract*, Panthenol, Bisabolol, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, Saccharide Isomerate, Tocopherol, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Disodium EDTA, Polyquaternium-10, Alcohol, Glyceryl Undecylen

The NG is deffinitly CG. I've tried the henna, Hemp, and Jojoba before. All are CG. Though if I remember right the shampoo's are either low sulfate, or sulfate based. I didn't mind it because they cleansed without completely stripping my hair. And I only need to shampoo once every week or every couple of weeks.

I second this. I have the coconut shampoo and love it. I tried the conditioner but I didn't like it as much as AOWC which is staple for me. When I had a twa I used the Italian Red Grape con and the Red Raspberry con, which were good moisturizers. I stopped using the Red Raspberry one because I realized that my hair doesn't like protein of any kind. I've tried the Nature's Gate Herbal Shampoo but I didn't like it because it was too stripping. I tried one of their conditioners but I didn't care for it either. HTH

As far as I know, the ingredients in bold are totally okay and CG friendly. I'm 99% sure that the Hydroxyethylcellulose is a thickening agent (or a preservative if it's not a thickening agent). The Disodium EDTA is great for CO-washing because an "EDTA" of any kind gives conditioners chelating properties to get rid of hard water build up and mineral deposits (it's great for swimmers or those with not-so-soft water). The Polyquat that you highlighted is CG, by my understanding. Some like it and some don't. It has a tendency to build up on some people's hair (and thus can be even more of a pain that 'cones if your hair actively hates it), and others have curls that eat it right up. The Alcohol can be drying, so some avoid it solely for that purpose, but it's way down the ingredient list. I believe the new CG book says to try to avoid it, but if it's a minute amount like in the NG conditioner, I'm sure it can't be too harmful. Unless your hair is super dry, damaged, sensitive, or something like that...
    So, I think you're good!

I use the DE Coconut, and is smells amazing in a pina colada-y way, and the slip from the condish is great.

Though I think lately it has been weighing down/greasing up my hair, but then again, I do use it every night...perhaps I should cut back...ah well. Still working out a routine. But I still recommend it! Very moisturizing.

Just wanted to update on the trial with the Nature's Gate Grapefuit and Ginger.

I used it as a co-wash for about a week and a half, switching it back and forth between my Desert Essence Jojoba Body Boosting Conditioner. And the Desert Essence definitely is the winner for me. Whenever I used the Nature's Gate, it came out okay, my hair felt like it normally does but my curls definitely didn't have the bouncy body that the Desert Essence gave me.

Every single time i rotated in the Desert Essence my curls were very full, clumped quite nicely and were springy and bouncy.

So in the end, both work nicely, I just prefer the Desert Essence.

Of these 2 brands, my faves are NG Pomegranate and Sunflower and DE Coconut. I'm not sure what you hair type is, but mine is dry with a mix of normal and coarse hair. Both of these are moisturising and smell great to me. These are the only 2 I would bother bringing on a trip. HTH!

I've never tried one, but I know that Nature's Gate, a low-Poos and care products are tons of protein in them. So if your hair is very thick, or a protein-loving, go for it! I'm not sure Desert Essence itself, but I know many people here use them. I have heard some of them a little 'dry, though. HTH a bit '!

I Used DE coconut condtioner for first time this week. I loved it. Great moisturizing and great slip. My hair is on the dry side so this did well for me.

I have used several NG products mostly the conditioners. I personally love the Pomegranate Sunflower conditioner which also help those with colored hair from fading. Even though my hair is not colored, I think it is a good thick, creamy type of conditioner that makes detangling my hair very NICE -> comparison to the Trader Joe's Nourishing Spa Conditioner.
I also like the NG Jojoba Conditioner but not as much as the Pomegranate Sunflowers. SMELLS DELIGHTFUL!! NG is changing its version into more creamier consistency type of conditioners which I LIKE A LOT.

For the DE Organics Hair Care I enjoy the Coconut Conditioner. It is great for detangling and cowashing your hair imo. I also have the Green Apple but I am not sure if I like as much as the Coconut. :)

I have never heard of this particular scent from NG. Do you know if it is carried on the west coast? Do you know if it is moisturizing? I am always on the prowl for good moisturizing/detangling conditioners.

It's almost all vegetable butters & oils, w/ a vegetable derived detangler and a modest amount of protein, smells lovely, and gives incredible slip. It feels and behaves like a much higher priced product. It lets you comb through your wet hair under the shower effortlessly.

Only downside w/ it is that it's a bit high in glycerin, but if you don't use it as a leave-in, even that shouldn't be a problem.

Don't care for the Nature's Gate line, at least so far.
Problem hair: No longer too porous (yay!). 2c/3a w/ lots of natural kinkiness (natural crimping) so resistant to forming defined curls, med. texture, but thinning since Sept. 2011 due to autoimmune illness.

I like NG so far! Although, I haven't actually tried anything else. I seem to have been lucky and picked a good combination of curly girl products and methodologies right off the bat. But I use the NG Pomegranate Sunflower as my second conditioner and my leave in. I like the thickness of it. I think that helps hold the curl. And it smells AWESOME. I'm sort of curious about the Aubrey Organics line and Desert Essence. I know Aubrey Organics can be found in Whole Foods...not sure if I remember Desert Essence there. Anyone know? And is there a big price difference, or is Desert Essence pretty similar?

NG Pomegranate is awesome. The only regular conditioner thus far that I can partially rinse out without my scalp itching. Keeps my hair very soft and well defined curls
