The Hunger Games

Has anyone read these? Since I got a Kindle, I've been devouring books, and I'm especially enjoying these.
I'm kind of surprised, because I was totally turned off by the description, and even a little disgusted. But I kept reading awesome reviews, and it was 5 dollars, so I figured I'd give it a try. Now I'm addicted! I'm almost done with the second book.
I realize that they're technically YA, but that never stopped anyone from enjoying Twilight.

The main character never seemed to grow/develop and by the end of the third one all the characters had been butchered imo (not to put you off or anything!). Its such a shame because I felt the author had set up such an intriguing storyline that really could have been great. But the third book in particular felt like the author had either run out of ideas, or it was rushed by publishers.
Still, many people love all three so its def worth seeing them through to the end.
I recommended the books to my friend, and now I might tell her to only read the first two! lol

However... I've also never cried as hard at a book as I did at the end of that one. It was right up there with HP 6 and Dumbledore's death, but I honestly think I might have lost it a little more...

I'll admit I didn't cry at the end. By that point I felt so fed up and manipulated by the author and annoyed with the characters that I didn't particularly care anymore. Which is sad.
A movie could be very good I think, if they do it well. And perhaps (not necessarily with the first book but afterwards) if they have good writers develop the story further and push it past the books. Although it could easily become a far too gory movie for me lol
I really like all 3 books. I agree that Katniss didn't grow much, but I wasn't really expecting her to actually. I didn't much like the ending though. It seemed too......easy I guess is the word I'm looking for. There were a few times I did want to smack her and scream "wake up!!" but overall Katniss was very resistant to change through the whole series. Prim turned out to be the much more adaptable character.
I think that's why the end of book 3 hit me as hard as it did. Prim was Katniss' one claim to growth and development, especially in that last book. Prim was also the catalyst for Katniss finally stepping up an DOING something instead of letting herself be played.

It wasn't that Katniss didn't grow, is that she seemed to go backwards. She had all this character and strength in the first book, and most of the second, but the third she turned into this useless, moaning, pathetic person I just wanted to slap her and say get your backside in gear and do something for christ sake.
She was all woe is me and it really got on my t*ts after like, 5 pages. And it got worse and worse throughout the book!
Peeta I really liked, and he had an interesting, complex story in the third book, (though how long did it take them to go rescue them!) but it felt glossed over and too easily resolved (Katniss just wandered off and forgot about him) and I felt it would have been so much more interesting if the author had focused on that and their relationship recovering, and have Katniss fighting for him.
The other guy (supposedly a love triangle but it never really went anywhere) turned into this nasty, horrible person. I actually liked the twist that his device got Prim killed and thought that was a very interesting concept, where do you draw the line in war and wanted katniss to form an opinion and stand up and fight for it, but (again) she just seemed to wander around aimlessly and let the people around her do what they liked to her and everyone else. But his character was completely butchered and it could have been done so much more subtly. In the end he just disappears, there's not even a goodbye between them.
I like that she chose Petra, but it didn't seem likely after everything she had done/thought in the book. I didn't sense that she actually liked him that much. The end few pages were definitely a cop out I felt.

I think she ended up choosing Peeta mostly because he was the absolute ONLY person in the world that could understand where she'd been, and why she was so damaged. They were both damaged. I think if all that stuff hadn't happened, she'd never in a million years have chosen Peeta.. but after being bonded through the games and their grief, who else could she pick really?
not the most romantic of ways to choose a partner, but I get it I guess. It's kind of like Frodo not being able to stay with the rest of the hobbits... he was just too changed to be around people who weren't changed the same way.
I do agree with your frustration with her in the last book though. I think the author was TRYING for realism (cuz lets face it... we'd all have lost it FAR sooner than she did) but it didn't delve far enough into her emotions to really achieve that. Instead, it felt like a cop out bc we didn't fully understand what she was going through and it just looked like she was moaning and being stupid constantly.
Gale's part was most definitely a cop out at the end. It had potential in the second book to really develop into a viable choice for a relationship. but you're right, he's fairly repulsive... too blood thirsty, and there's no way she could have been with him even if he HADNT done what he did to Prim (unintentionally).

Even though it's marketed as YA, it doesn't read or feel like typical YA material, which I appreciate.

3 is Mockingjay
On a slightly different note, someone suggested Hailee Steinfeld as Katniss for the movie version... I 100% agree.

I would like for them to go with some unknowns.
Re the books, I have read books 1 and 2. Very slim chance I will be reading book 3- this is what happens when you read spoilers. :sad10:

It is YA though, so I should know not to expect too much
But I do love adult dystopian novels like 1984 and The Handmaid's Tale.
But I've actually found YA to be some of the most creative, imaginative and well written fiction out there - you just have to hunt down the great ones!
By contrast, I've often found a lot of adult fiction dull and repetitive.
Im always on the hunt for great YA - do share some if you have any to recommend!
Have you read The Edge Chronicles/Bartimaeus Trilogy/Philip Pullman's Northern Lights/Cassandra Clare/Garth Nix/Percy Jackson?
Sorry to guano thread!
That's why I was hesitant to read Hunger Games to begin with, because I thought it would be poorly written and dumbed down. I disliked "Twilight" for these reasons and stopped reading the series after the first book. I still can't fathom why grown women would find those books so fascinating. Whereas, I couldn't put Hunger Games down.

The website Forever Young Adult is awesome!
I feel like I've talked about it on here before, but maybe not. They're always giving great suggestions... And they're hilarious, too!
