New Curly Girl Book is out!!

Lorraine Massey finally updated her Curly Girl handbook - with an expanded second edition. I just received mine from amazon.com (I had pre-ordered it ages ago). It's got a dvd, trips on trimming your own hair, Q's and A's, how to grow out chemically straightened hair, how to deal with chemo curls and also more information about handling different types of curls. She names the different types: fractal or zigzag, corkscrew, corkicelli and cherub, botticelli, wavy and s'wavy. She even has a section for coloring curls - and allowing hair to go gray. There are also chapters on kids, guys and updo's. And all of the photos are soooo much more flattering than those in the original book. I'm excited to see the dvd and read the book. I'm off to do that now!!

I am confused by Amazon. It indicates it was published 1/13/2011 but it's available-how can that be?? And the reviews are old ones...I am so confused.

I received my copy this afternoon also!

I'm very impressed with the new edition! It's not as cutesy, more factual, and definitely has a lot of new and useful information. The section on trimming your own hair is a great addition, and not, by any means the only one! I think the Q&A is quite good, and helps to introduce a lot of material that we all want to know but doesn't quite fit into other chapters. Love the styling ideas, particularly the day to evening ones (and the sewn updo is amazing)!

The CG method has been updated, and I'm looking forward to trying it. I think it's interesting (and reasonable) that all sulfate free cleansers are now grouped together, with herbal based conditioners as an acceptable substitute.

I like the DVD, though it's not tremendously Mac friendly.
    Peace,
    Morgan

Thanks for those details! Just curious, are the hair recipes still included? I know they are so basic, but i liked having the Lemon-aid and the lavender water spray recipes in the book before. Are those still there? Are there new ones too?

I wasn't impressed with the first book and had no interest in the second book. This thread is making me want to get it. Can someone describe the new hair types??

"fractal or zigzag, corkscrew, corkicelli and cherub, botticelli, wavy and s'wavy"

I can guess what some of them mean. It looks like they go in "reverse" order. From tightest curl to loosest curl. It's "corkicelli and cherub" that peaks my interest. I'm imagining that it's what most of us would call 3b?? Tighter then Botticelli with root curl??

Spiralli - There are recipes - for a calming protein pack, lavender spray, lemon aid, exfoliating scrub, avacado hair treat, shine spray - and others.

kathymack - She adds new hair descriptions and hair types. I had typed up a lot of the descriptions for the different patterns, but lost it when my internet connection failed and I had to re-start my computer. Boo. But I'll re-type the celebrity examples for each type. Corkscrew curls - Beyonce; Botticelli - Shakira; Corkicelli - Melina Kanakaredes, Cherub - Taylor Swift; Wavy - Megan Fox; s'wavy (the least curly of the bunch) - Evangeline Lily; Fractal or Zigzag - Laura Izibor.

Brief descriptions: corkicelli - varying hair patterns throughout hair's overall landscape, curly year round. cherub - curly hair from birth, baby fine and easily disrupted by wind or sleep. Wavy - straighter hair until puberty, tendency to frizz, usually has a flat crown, appears straigher in the winter. s'wavy - appears straight in the winter - have to work at it to get it to wave at all in the winter; low to no frizz factor, natural shine, looks better when layered.

    Interesting read!

You got the correct one if you ordered the second edition. I'm not even sure if the 1st edition is even available anymore. The date they gave was an estimated date and since it was ready earlier, I got it before I thought I would. Love that sort of happy accident!

I just watched the dvd - I thought it was very helpful. I especially liked how it showed the quantities of products used for different types of hair and lengths of hair and the techniques for achieving the different up-dos. I also enjoyed the before and afters.

This morning I followed the techniques suggested for my type of hair and used a LOT more gel than I have in the past. My hair's not quite dry yet, but I like it a lot so far!

The hair recipes are still there, expanded and updated. Raw eggs (a potential source of salmonella) are replaced with powdered eggs.

The cutting information goes well beyond tips. It's a full trim, and is covered very well in the book and on the DVD. Seeing the before, in progress, and after is really amazing, even to someone who's had a number of Deva cuts. I've only trimmed my face frames once, and my bangs a few times, but after reading the well illustrated information in the book, I know I can do this! Wow, talk about empowerment!

I just ordered after I saw amazon's sample pages of the book. I was hesitant to buy this until it came out because I was a little afraid it might be just one long ad for devacurl products....which my hair hates.

Thanks for posting all of the info. I've been waiting for the 2nd book to come out. I'm going to Borders or Barnes & Nobles this week to get it!

The first book really changed my life! I had no idea how to deal with my 3b/c curls and straightened them for almost 30 years! I've been curly for the last 5 years (since reading her book) and I'm loving it! I get compliments all the time! Who would have thought?

I'm most looking forward to the hair cutting information!:p

Fractal - love it! Will definitely buy or borrow the book.

For those who have the new book - how does she do on naturally coily/kinky hair? I wasn't impressed with her chapter in the original book although her general advice for curlies worked for me.

Cala Renee told me she is hosting a book tour appearance for Lorraine either at her salon in Beverly or a larger place close by - save the date! 2/7/11 12:30 -2:30pm

Sounds interesting, even for someone (like me) who isn't cg. Unfortunately I suspect the dvd won't play over here which is a shame.
