putting it all out there

I'm so happy to finally be an official member of NaturallyCurly.com! I've been coming to this site for years and it's always been helpful to me.

I've been a full time curly girl since birth, so 30 years now, and I'm still trying to figure it out! I don't straighten or color my hair and I only wear it curly. I'm type 3a/3b, medium texture, low/normal porosity, and my hair is thick as all hell! I wash my hair 3 times per week and I'm currently using the Devacurl no-poo once per week, and tresemme curl moisture conditioner.

I'm trying to break away from my long-time regimen of Biolage gelee and Paul Mitchell SuperSculpt and have been trying other styling products.

My problem with all the new stuff I'm trying, though, is that it simply does not provide enough hold and I end up with lots of loose hair that doesn't fall in with the rest of my curls. For example, Devacurl Angell does not help at all, and their Set It Free makes my hair too soft and worsens the problem, I also find the devacurl products make my hair feel greasy when it's just been washed. (will probably have them up to swap soon!) I like jessicurl products because they form nice curls without lots of gunk, but they're not providing enough hold. I've tried mixing some of the Biolage gel in with both product lines and that is also not cutting it. I am applying these products after rinsing out my conditioner, raking/scrunching them in while my hair is very wet, and letting it drip dry naturally. Adding product again as needed as my hair starts to dry more.

I'm open to any and all suggestions about changes to my routine or other products that might work for me. I would love to hear from you! GREAT WEBSITE and GREAT FORUMS! Looking forward to being on here a LOT!

    Welcome to the forums!

First off, I think the Flawless Curls conditioner you are using as your rinse-out condish has 'cones in it. These are the ingredients that copied from Amazon -- not sure if Tresemme reformulated it. But what I'm seeing here is 'cone city!

Water (Aqua), Stearyl Alcohol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Dimethicone, Cyclohexasiloxane, Aspartic Acid, Quaternium-18, Fragrance (Parfum), Dmdm Hydantoin, Citric Acid, Isostearamidopropyl Ethyldimonium Ethosulfate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Limonene, Disodium Edta, Peg-9, Amyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Geraniol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Polysorbate 20, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Thiamine Hcl, Tocopheryl Acetate, Panthenol, Ascorbic Acid, Niacinamide, Biotin.

All of the ingredients in bold print are silicones (anything that ends in -cone, -conol, or -xane), and they are not CG friendly. They build up on the hair shaft over time and can cause lots of problems. To remove all of those nasty 'cones from your hair, I'd recommend doing a sulfate wash or a BS/ACV rinse. That way you can start from a clean slate and continue your CG routine from there.

Also, in case you didn't know about it, here's a list of great techniques that can bring out your maximum curl potential. Not all of them work for EVERYONE, but there's lots of great stuff on here you should check out (if you haven't already done so)!

I personally like plopping, super soaker, and possibly pixie-diffusing.
I think that by letting your hair drip-dry naturally, the weight of the water might be weighing down your curls. You might want to try scrunching some of the water out with a t-shirt or a microfiber towel before/after applying products, plopping, or diffusing right when you get out of the shower -- just to get the excess moisture out of your hair so your curls can spring up freely.

Also, if you need more hold from your gels, I hear great things on here about L.A. Looks Sport Gel, although I've never tried it myself. It's EXTREME hold, so you might want to check it out. You can get a big bottle in Walmart for about $3.

    Good luck and HTH!
