Do layers make thin, fine hair look thinner?

I am wondering if I have too many layers as my hair seems to look thinner. It could also be that I am using the wrong products or both! What are the best type of layers for thin, fine 2c/3a hair? Is it better to wear hair longer or shorter to make it look thicker? What do you all think?

I have layers, but my hair is longer & I'm going to grow it out more. If I go too short with them, then yes my hair looks thinner. I find the closer I am to nailing down my hair routine, the better my hair looks. Right now if I find the proper moisture & protein my hair pops.

I think fine hair in general, no matter what length, needs some kind of layers though...

I was very hesitant to add layers to my thin/fine hair. I think if the layers are a good length in relation to the rest of the hair length/style they can add volume and movement and work well. Also it's important to use products that don't make the hair look wet or stringy, IMO, because then the layers may look worse.

Layers are a must for curly hair at any length--it avoids the dreaded triangle look. My fine, thin hair looks more voluminous at chin length. It looks "stringy" when it gets longer, as some of my earlier pictures demonstrate. My inverted bob can't be too extreme, either, or the front pieces look terrible.

Spiralli---how do you know which products will make your hair stringy? What products have had that effect on your hair? I bet the way you apply products has an impact on the way it dries as well.

Kathymack--do you need to wear your hair above shoulder length to avoid the stringy look? I think I might have the stringy problem too with long hair:(

I'm older. Thyroid and medication issues have REALLY reduced my hair density. It's thin and you can see through to the scalp in a lot of places. I wear it around chin length--the way it is in my signature picture. Sometimes and inch shorter, sometimes an inch longer. All depends on where I am in my haircut.

Kathymack--I too have thyroid issues. I have been taking biotin lately and I think it has made my hair a little thicker. Have you tried it?

Yes, I take either "Hair, Skin, Nails" Vitamins or "Dermavites." I think it's made a little difference. I take another medication that lists hair loss as a side effect.
